Omega, Whisper, and Vessery

By Lysus, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I flew this list a few times on Sunday and really liked it. Omega Leader and Whisper are almost always target locked, giving Vessery plenty of chances to activate his pilot ability. Overall, the list generally has a ton of tokens and green dice to protect it, though it is susceptible to variance like any high-agility list. Any tips to improve it?

Take away kallus... put mk 2 engines on vessery...

It's just what I would do. I use kallus a lot in lists...and very rarely once a game starts. I'm at a point in my life where I think kallus isn't as good as he used to be.

Do you find he is still usefully these days?

I do like Kallus when I remember to use him (which frankly isn't as often as I should, one of the many things I need to get better at). He opens up Whisper's actions, making me feel more open to evade rather than taking a focus to be absolutely sure my shot hits and I get the second focus.

So far, I haven't run into any situations where I felt like I really needed the MK II on Vessery. Stress lists are almost non-existent in my local meta and the dial's good enough (combined with /x7's incentive to go fast) that I don't find myself wanting to 1- or 2-turn.

Omega Leader wins games for me - either he gets ignored until late game where he dominates or he becomes the target of focus fire early, drawing attention away from other ships that are more dangerous at that point.

I like running the TIE Shuttle with Intelligence Agent (I tried that out this weekend) but that list doesn't seem particularly conducive to Systems Officer. It requires Range 1 and the differing maneuvering capabilities of those ships mean they're not being used to their fullest extent if they're staying in formation. Vessery and Whisper also both already have methods to assure target locks without using actions. The other issue I see is that when you have tractor beam in a list, you want it to be firing first so every other ship in your list can take advantage of it (and so it can put your enemies on rocks where they can't shoot back). Your primary damage dealer is shooting before tractor beam, which is firing at PS6 after many enemy ships will have already gotten their shots off.

How about this setup? I like them all at PS8 for movement/firing flexibility.

(100)

"Whisper" (40) - TIE Phantom

Adaptability (0), Fire Control System (2), Agent Kallus (2), Advanced Cloaking Device (4)

"Omega Leader" (26) - TIE/FO Fighter

Juke (2), Comm Relay (3)

Colonel Vessery (34) - TIE Defender

Veteran Instincts (1), TIE/x7 (-2)

How about this grouping of PS8s. I think Vessery needs the /d title. I think the TB works more than expected and is worth the 1(3)pts.

"Omega Leader" (26) - TIE/FO Fighter

Juke (2), Comm Relay (3)

Colonel Vessery (37) - TIE Defender

Veteran Instincts (1), TIE/D (0), Tractor Beam (1)

"Echo" (37) - TIE Phantom

Veteran Instincts (1), Fire Control System (2), Advanced Cloaking Device (4)

That PS8 list is 102 points. I think it's important to note that not only are you paying the three points for Tractor Beam, you're also giving up the Evade token.

You might have not swapped out whisper for echo when you counted his points up,.. looks fine here http://geordanr.github.io/xwing/?f=Galactic%20Empire&d=v4!s!78:27,36,-1:-1:9:;187:152,153:-1:-1:;70:27,144,-1:34:-1:&sn=Unnamed%20Squadron

You have a point about the evade token loss and paying extra for the TB, but it all depends on if you want to play offensively or defensively I guess.

Echo needs initiative to fire first and cloak, especially in this PS8 meta. He will die a quick death with inquisitor, Vessery + VI, etc shooting before he can cloak.

Except he has VI on Echo to make it a PS8 as well. I do this all the time flying Echo, OL, and Carner together but I am liking the idea of replacing Carner with Vessery and I think I will try this list in my next game.

One of my old lists from back in the days of wave 4 was whisper, Vessery, and Dark Curse. Flew really well and i have been wanting to run a similar variation to yours (aka using El Presidente instead of curse) for a while now. Fun/solid list idea.

If I was going to do an all PS8 list with Vessery, I think it would look more like this.

Colonel Vessery

TIE/D

Tractor Beam

Hull Upgrade

Veteran Instincts

Omega Leader

Comm Relay

Juke

The Inquisitor

Push the Limit

Autothrusters

TIE/v1

Proton Rockets

Is the hull needed? There is offense you can take there instead (prockets/GC). But I guess that is a play call, offense or defense.

I figure Vessery's likely to be the focus target as he has the fewest defensive tokens. If I'm at range 1 to shoot with prockets, I'm forgoing a Tractor Beam and a 4-die primary attack for an attack that will, admittedly, likely roll 5 hits with Vessery's ability plus the focus token and chips.

It's worth thinking about and it's something I'd have to play in both configurations to determine what I'd like better.

Well, the list performed fairly well at last weekend's tournament; I was unfortunately prevented from a reasonable shot at winning the thing due to absolutely ice cold dice in the final. I've rarely had problems keeping anything in arc (though interceptors are not popular in my local meta at the moment, so it's hard to judge against them) and there's almost always a target lock available for Vessery to use.
