Have you changed Ships besides att achements or mods?

By RodianClone, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Have you? For example, have you upgraded/changed out the Cannons or hyperdrives for other models? Or added passanger or encumbrance capacity or space for consumables. Maybe increased sensor range? Or did you go crazy and add a huge dorsal cartoon hand with a space-fly swatter?...

What kind of creative changes have you/your players done to a ship in your game? Was the gm(you?) just ok with it, helpful or reluctant?

Are there already rules, guidelines, suggestions or sidebars about upgrading or changing parts that I'm not aware of?

So, for one ship in a game where I was the GM, I suggested that the players would need to upgrade their sensor array, and that the way to do that would be to take an appropriate section of another ship and graft it onto theirs. It would be too large to incorporate internally, but wouldn’t be so large that it would affect handling, etc… if mounted externally.

I had a couple of different ship types lined up for the “source” to be scavenged from, and the PCs had to figure out how to get the appropriate part of one or the other of them.

But it was all handled descriptively, outside the realm of attachments and modifications.

For another ship in a game where I was one of the players, we made some extensive modifications to our Gozanti cruiser, and I think the GM let us bolt on a bit more stuff than we should theoretically have been able to do, at least without having one or more PCs with the Rigger specialization, etc….

But there, it was a matter of replacing retractable Heavy Laser Cannons with non-retractable turret-mounted Light Turbolasers.

We also mounted a small hangar bay on that ship, so that we could have a HWK-290 act as an attack shuttle, kitted out with equipment appropriate for conducting boarding operations, etc….

In both cases, the GM either suggested/orchestrated the modifications, or at least helped a great deal in achieving the results that would be required for success. It was very much a partnership between the GM and the players.

I rewrote the Citadel Light freighter to have EC 125 and 12 passengers. Not really a game-changer, but I wanted it to be able to haul more cargo and the deckplan called for triple bunks so I dropped passengers to a multiple of 3. I also rewrote it so that the light ion cannons are one forward-firing weapon system with Linked 3.

Or did you go crazy and add a huge dorsal cartoon hand with a space-fly swatter?...

I want this attachment. Never worry about mynocks again.

My players had a Space Turtle, and one of them had a YWing. I let them convert a part of the ship in the back into an airlock so the Ace could enter/exit his docked Ywing without going EV. While docked, the YWing would stick out like a tail for the Turtle.

As mentioned in the Starship Weapons and Upgrades thread , I have a custom CEC YZ-900 converted into a mobile Jedi training facility complete with library, workshop for constructing lightsabers (crystals not included), and a variable gravity lightsaber training room/gym with adjoining showers. I gutted three of the two-man staterooms for the gym and shower room reducing my passenger capacity from 14 down to 8. It also has droid automation allowing me to operate the ship solo if necessary.

I think my "Shuttle" counts that I just finished lol, as the GM for a group of 8 or 9 PCs using a modified government issue Gozanti as a mobile HQ, it is quite heavily changed. Republic shipwrights can do wonderful things with time and money. Biggest changes are the central hull being pushed out and something around 6 attachments being built into the ship's schematics, essentially for free, rather than arbitrarily changing its base stats.

Although really, both of the YT-1300 modifications I was working on months ago in that same thread would count as well lol. Splicing a cargo hold onto the side of one, and merging a pair of them together for the other. Never actually finished them though.
