One question you need to ask yourself over time is if you're looking to just play some games and have fun, (hey cool!) or if you want to get into the tournament scene and have fun there too. (Also a great time!)
As you get more and more games in, you'll discover combos and things that do and don't work. Getting started, there are no wrong answers. Not playing, that's a wrong answer!
Another option is vassal. There's a fun community there too that try and get in games. Sure it's online but if you're like me where the community is a bit small, we can't exactly play ever week, even tho we want to.

Depends on how much I enjoy it after I start playing I guess. I've been playing X-Wing quite a bit, and its not like I have extra free time, so it will cut into my X-wing. Our local X-Wing group is pretty casual and I enjoy the tournaments quite a bit... so you never know. 
As someone probably just a few months ahead of you, I've found owning a corvette (Jaina's light card), MC30c, Assault Frigate II, and YT-2400's to be my best friends. Buy them as you can in that order. More important to think about your flying and missions and just fly them well. Enjoy being a terrorist. And may the Empire die as flashy as they do in the movies!! . . . yeah, I said it!
