Corran Lists On Vassal Over The Weekend

By Jisforjets, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I have always wanted to be a Corran player, but have never managed to understand how to play him.

Wife and child went on a trip this weekend so I had the house to myself for some Vassal time.

I wanted to stay near my wheel house and played a VI Corran with FCS R2D2 and engine. I like PS, and boost!

I played 46 point Corran everytime. Which meant the rest of my squad had 54 points. My positioning was never truly amazing with Corran, and in a few instances I was certain inspite of underwhelming dice I should have played for a different position.

The 54 points;

Red Squad Veteran wired r3a2 IA

Sabine intel agent dorsal turret

Sabine wrecked Bossk, and took 3 damage at r1 from a token less omega leader. R3a2 red pushed around Boba Fett.

Eden Vrill antipursuit

Green squad A crack Adapt autothruster title refit

Vrill helped me smoke an overly aggressive Dengaroo player. Green got one shotted here the Dengaroo match. Vrill cause a ton of gried for 3 academies and Soontir plus Turr. Mostly with Vrill I failed to take advantage of his blocking. Those times when I blocked well where occasionally undone with absurd naked dice rolls. Vrill felt really powerful. Occasionally the Greens adapt caused more problems than help for my positioning.

Nera deadeye proton torp extra munitions chips baffle

Mean Green, same as above

Only played this one once. Nera did amazing, surviving entirely to long. She did flub her first torp roll 3 blanks and an eyeball vs a 3 green focus defense roll. Baffle on Bs and G1As is amazing. Nera is surprisingly good.

Chewie title c3p0 predator engine intel

Didn't play against a squad that had any of the goods vs 1300s and Chewie soaked a ton of damage and Corran shot out to safety.

Notable Beatdowns

Miranda, Nera, dorsal title r3a2 Y

Controlled ranges really well and got me to over commit. Introduced me to Nera. I had a chance at hot dicing a B wing, but terrible position is why I got smashed!

3 guardian K wings 2 homers one ion missile all with the goods and auto blaster turret. I over commited into r3 against the Ion K... And got Ioned. Next round I only took 1 damage from a homing missile with focus... But the auto turret caught me for 2. Bad psotioning and a slick rebel alpha strike made this one fast and informative.

2 defenders, Ves Rhyad and Omega leader. Got a fancy block, then took 3 damage from a naked roll at R3 on Corran. Bad positioning and a slick turn in by the defenders smoked corran the next round. Spanked again.

Lots of tough matches, and face plants for positioning with Corran.

Any tips or tricks with Corran? Do you think Corran is evwn playable in this meta?

I play Corran with PTL. PS is great to know your position that round, but I find I get far better results with the PTL. It's not an every turn thing like with Soontir either, so with good planning, I don't have to be stuck with green moves.

So playing this way is 48 points, so some of your supports would have to be adjusted. I really like the Nera build, as it gives the enemy something else to think about. I also like the idea of two Blue Squadron B wings with Sensor Jammer. Gives a lot of HP to chew through and Sensor Jammer changes the action scene for the opponent, which is always great.

Without seeing the matches, it's hard to tell if flying is a contributing factor. When I build lists, I always like to increase my options (PTL, EU) or limit/affect my opponents options (Sensor Jammer).

As far as Corran being playable, I think he absolutely is. Be sure to time your double tap and don't be afraid to turtle up prior to and after an attacking turn. I like turtling, firing a naked shot to use FCS, then moving in for the kill next turn with position and full mod shot and keep TL for double tap shot. I typically send Corran after anything lower PS at the start. If they fly in formation, have him flank (this is where 2 B wings to joust with comes in handy) and try to get in behind them. If you are going against higher PS targets, I have had great success turning Corran into a blocker. With dualing B wings as backup, a well timed Corran block can sometimes end an ace.

A lot of this is just my style of play, so YMMV. I do think though that PTL Corran is miles better than VI Corran. Again, preference, but I always seem to do better with the option of two actions than with one.

PTL always seems really good on Corran... But what about all the PS8 that is out there right now? Inquisitor, Jax, VI Ves, Omega leader, not to mention the 9 and higher club? I played PTL engine Corran last week on table vs a very bad scum build and PTL just felt like a win more upgrade.

What about all the PS8 out there? Here's my thing, one action always feels so limiting to me. Obviously there are times where it's not avoidable, but especially with Aces, whatever faction or flavor, actions are essential. Being able to position just right, or token up for good dice mods, is part of flying aces, and the big part of what makes them dangerous. What if Adaptability Vader runs into VI Dengar? What if VI Poe meets VI Vader? What if you have PTL Soontir on one side and VI Whisper on the other? Who gets initiative, if they are both the same point lists, comes down to a roll of the die. My point is, even "Aces" sometimes run into a bigger PS. It's about adapting to the situation. Learning how to turn your high PS ace into a blocker, or how to outmaneuver your opponent with prediction.

With Corran's double tap, try to line up those range 1 shots and let loose on the enemy, then fly away and turtle up. Patience can sometimes be your biggest asset, especially with rebel regen. You don't have to win the battle in a turn, you can take your time.

I agree to a point. Being able to out PS certain ships is more important than double actions if you already have an OK position. PS killimg is totally a thing. Alos, 2 points is 2 points. I think you make a fair point though. To have initiative choice and PS8 would shore up a lot of the things I would rather avoid. That costs me 4 to 5 more points on the buikd though. I have played PTL corran 10+ times so I am not completely unfamiliar with him at 8 with PTL :)

Sadly I have played VI Corran 30+ times and he still is not clicking :/
