How does obstacle selection work in tournaments?

By Mackaywarrior, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Can there be more than one of the same shape? Do tournament people show up with their 3 they want? All of it is foreign to me.

You choose 3 unique obstacles from either of the Core Set asteroids and YT-2400/Decimator debris. Your opponent will bring their own 3 and those are the 6 obstacles you place in the play area.

Which means duplicate tokens are possible if you and your opponent both bring the same one. But you can't bring two of the same yourself.

not

Oh is that right? I've not seen anyone do that. Interesting....

Yeah, you're both basically creating a pool of obstacles from which to choose from. And whoever has the initiative gets to pick first, so you do risk your opponent grabbing an obstacle you wanted to place and putting it somewhere you don't want it.
