I've been looking for a capital ship battle game for quite a while now, but it's hard to find good ones that people actually play. So, I'm not very fond of X-wing's business model, does Armada have the same issue of being very upgrade centered / needing to buy other ships for fixes / essential upgrades? Secondly, what do you need to get started? Like, what is the default play format and such.
A few questions
Being an FFG Game, it has a similar Business Model to X-Wing... But realise as well, in comparison, the game itself is in its infancy....
The Core Game box is required (Damage Deck, mostly, as almost everything else is available separately - there are some unique upgrade cards to the Core box, too after all...) And sets you up with 150-180 points (sometimes as much as 200) depending on how you play, for *each* side...
The Standard Tournament-Rules Style game however, is 400pts... Which is between 3-5 ships as a Ballpark "Average" (There are certainly lists that run from 2-8 ships after all).
But unlike most other FFG games, you can easily get by without Upgrades for Ships. And, again, being in the infancy of the game (Its really only just maturing now with the latest stuff still to be released), most of the upgrades are available separately, if you *really* feel you need them...

So the world's winner last November had only a Commander and no upgrades. Some upgrades help but it is more about experience with your list than what is in your list.
You will need the starter set, what ever ships you want, a dice pack, some squadrons.
You might want to get a second maneuver tool to make a smaller speed 2 tool.
I will throw out the caveat that there are some very strong and popular upgrades that (so far) only come with one ship expansion, but they are only useful on certain ships. There's no Auto thrusters equivalent (so far), ie something so strong and cheap that anything that can take it, should.

There is also no bad ships. Each person has their own opinion on each of the ships but each ship has its uses and many functions. It is your job as a player to figure those out and test things. Test things a LOT!
If you search back in past threads you'll see numerous ones about what people feel you need to get started at 400 points, for one side or the other (or both). In general it's along the lines of one of each ship, and a squadron pack or two. The beauty of the game is that everything works - you just have to figure out how to use it best.

I personally don't ever think starting out at 400 points is a good idea. Too much information to start out at. do several 200 point games and you will be fine
They aren't kidding about there being no "bad" ships. For Rebels, as an example, every kind of ship has won at least one regional, except for the MC30c...
Which won US Nationals.
People sometimes trash talked the Victory Star Destroyer and Nebulon-B Frigate in the past, but those two have good times on the horizon in upcoming waves.
OP, feel free to post about what kind of fleet you'd like to play and the forums here would be happy to help you refine and cut costs.

Uh-oh, I'll start preparing with that in mind now then.
what was that mc30 list?
also, VSDs honestly have been having a ruf time.

you should try my 200 point variant if you want a taste of armada without buying everything... armada is just like xwing, you need everything due to upgrades. =/

Welcome to the game, I think your going to enjoy it. A lot of us were waiting on space fleet style battles and have built a nice chat community. I started with two core sets, but I don't think that's how I'd go these days. One core set is probably the best way to get started, then read some threads and find how you want to play. Armada is nice in that no two players need to fly the same fleet. No matter what you get there'll always be stuff you want. I play Rebels and just ordered an ISD to round out my Imperials because I like to be able to have a good pickup game with anyone who hasn't built there collection up that well yet.
Relax and go with it, if you're reading this your'e probably already hooked.
