Help me throw a wrench in Omega Leader's tactics

By Parakitor, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I will be participating in both the North American Championship and the Epic Dogfight tournaments at GenCon. I am much more invested in the Epic Dogfight, because it's kind of uncharted waters, and very exciting. So I started wondering what I should take to the main tournament. I have a couple of pet squads, or I could try to build to fight the meta. Then I thought, "What would completely ruin my day?"

Omega Leader. Actually, Omega Leader and any ship with Juke + Comm Relay.

If I could bring a squad that totally messed with those tactics, I'd be a happy man. I mean, I roll some of the best green dice in the world (possibly exaggerating here), and to have them Juke one away just...oh, it irks me!

So they only ideas I have are to:

a) build a squad around Wes Janson, probably flying with Biggs, or

b) build a squad featuring Palob to steal those precious evade tokens

c) Captain Kagi can give Omega Leader a rough time

The problem I'm facing is that either way it only eliminates one token. It's good, but it just isn't enough for me. I need more. Are there any other cards/combos that can strip evade tokens from high-PS ships? Nothing seems to be coming together for me.

So then why on earth are you not using elusiveness? Take what makes Omega leader scary away from him by busting up his target locks? Not to mention if you will be Barrel rolling anyways get something out of it?

Bumping. I love large base bumpers. When they bump, no actions.

Multiple ships kill Omega Leader as dead as anything. The ability only works on one opponent after all.

I like option A with Janson as it knocks out the target lock or evade depending on which is most advantageous to you.

But then I'm decidedly not a meta list flyer.

what? no conner nets?

omega L can't do jack about conner + sabine

I wouldn't make any drastic changes to accommodate for Omega Leader matchups in particular. Omega Leader's not much of an issue if you focus him/her down first, and Soontir, UBoats, and Ghosts are bigger threats IMO.

Wes is a good start though. Palob isn't all that effective since it's really the TL that locks you down.

If you want to counter play omega leader and other juke fo's a good place to start is carnor jax + captain kagi. Decimators and theyre ilk laugh at juke because what are evasion dice.

Yep, the best counter to OL is ganging up on him. His worst nightmare is being caught under the guns of two or more ships, because then he's just a TIE fighter.

Wes Janson is a pain for him as well, as is anyone with Expert Handling and higher PS or equal PS when he has init.

With those two exceptions there's not a lot you can do to listbuild around him, you have to kill him with tactics.

Agreed just focus him down first he won't have much defence because he TL and four hits disappears quick.

He's only ever a threat end game so don'tlet him survive.

If playing Rebels I think that Wes Janson is a great addition because he messes with several popular heavy hitters in the current meta. Omega Leader, U-boats, Poe, Soontir and others all lose significant punch without their tokens.

I would probably play him with VI and R3-A2 as the extra stress will further compound their problems.

I appreciate all the feedback!

Expert Handling is great, but you have to be higher PS, or else he'll just take the Target Lock again

Oooh, that's awfully tempting, but I think I'm going to stick to Imperials.

Yeah, Kagi and Carnor make a great team. You're point about decimators is good, except that my favorite is Kenkirk, in which case Juke still matters.

And as for everybody who says just focus him down, well, that's why I like rolling with lots of TIE interceptors -- one of them is bound to roll well enough to get damage through. Lots of food for thought.

Okay, here's a squad that I am leaning towards:

Carnor Jax (Push the Limit, Autothrusters, Royal Guard TIE, Stealth Device)

Zertik Strom (TIE/x1, Advanced Targeting Computer)

Captain Kagi (Sensor Jammer, Emperor Palpatine)

I posted about it before, and got some good feedback. Kagi is the real wrench for Omega Leader, but the squad can hold its own against a variety of opponents. Stealth Device isn't my favorite; I usually go with Hull upgrade. What do you think? A little different from what I was going for, but I came up with it and I like it.

I like it. Imperial action control at its finest. Have to acquire clearence from captain Kagi if you want to target lock another vessel. Carnor enforces that focusing on harming the empire's finest or evading their shots will not be tolerated. Finally if you do get close it will not avail your attempted assault because Zertik Strom had the final say. Very Imperial.

I would probably stick to the hull upgrade for carnor though, I feel like stealth device is counter-intuitive with his ability. I also personally like running zertik with Accuracy corrector over atc. It's hard to hit zertik strom, it's even harder when he spends his action to evade every round (with no loss of damage out-put). This would also open up a point to give zertik veteran instincts. It isn't required, but lists with the same pilot skill are so much easier to fly over the course of a day (for me). However there's nothing saying your list won't work as is either, all the changes I'm offering are simply personal preference.

In that situation with OL I either manage to stay out of range of Kagi in which case I go for Carnor, or I have to lock Kagi in which case fine, all guns on Kagi. Palp is blocked by OL's ability when OL's shoot his ship, it won't take long to kill him when he has effectively no defence dice against one of my ships.

Zertik is the weak link here though, he's just not goign to contribute enough with that setup I don't think. I'd dump Sensor Jammer off Kagi and buy up to someone better for the third seat.

It may be worth noting by the by that Expert Handling on anyone is a soft counter to OL - removing his TL does mean he can just apply it againif he's higher PS - but that in turn means that he's got to spend his action locking, and he's not focusing for more hits or barrel rolling for position.

Omega Leader's downside is that he needs both his Evade and TL tokens to be effective. Force him to spend the Evade, or get his TL'd target out of arc, and he is just another TIE/fo. He is great one on one, but has to modify his defense dice with the Evade when you have more than one ship shooting at him. Bottom line is, like many have said, focus him with more than one ship and he'll go down. Even a TLT-boat can give him trouble by forcing him to spend his Evade.

I've run Omega Leader a lot lately, and he does tend to be both very fragile and the enemy's number one target.
