A Quick Thought Experiment on "Damaged Cockpit"

By Caboose2900, in X-Wing

First off, let me start off by saying the new FAQ sucks. Well, not really, it's actually pretty great. But one thing about it really, really sucks. Why did they have to screw over Tel Trevura like they did? If you don't know what I am talking about, basically this is what it says:

"Additionally, during the Combat phase, if the pilot skill of a ship that has not activated this phase changes to be higher than the current active ship, that ship does not become the active ship this phase. For example, if Tel Trevura has the “Damaged Cockpit” Damage card and is destroyed (for the first time) by a ship at pilot skill 5, he discards his damage cards. Therefore, his pilot skill changes to 7 and he cannot become the active ship this phase."

Now, this might seem insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but as a Tel Trevura advocate, I can tell you that it isn't for me. I can not tell you how many times I have gotten that bloody crit on Tel, for some reason he is drawn to it. Basically, that crit now affects one pilot 1000% more than any other pilot in the game currently, which is what they were trying to steer away from with the updated damage deck, or so I thought. I actually have an example where if this FAQ was in effect I would have lost a game. A very important game. This year at the Stele Open I ran a Bossk/Tel Trevura list to great success. I made it the whole way to the finals actually. But, during what was essentially my Semi-Final match, the board state was as follows: My opponent had a Kanan and Ezra bearing down on my battered, PS0 Tel. Both of his ships were pretty close to death as well, so I still had hope. Start of one of the last combats and Kanan activates, blows poor Tel (who had like 2 life left) into oblivion, but Tel zombifies and goes back to PS9. Now, both me and my opponent were uncertain what would happen next. Should Tel get to activate since it was technically the next highest PS now, or did Tel just miss his attack. We called a judge over, and after a little deliberation, he ruled that Tel got his shot next. Tel got some lucky rolls and killed Ezra that round, which is what turned that game around into my favor, and a few turns later won me the game.

Now with the new FAQ, basically my win is now invalidated. Upsets me a little. But what can I do, I am just one player with no say in how FFG goes about their business.

ANYWAYS. Now for the thought experiment. You will have to bear with me on this as I set up the situation. Opponent has a Quickdraw who just activated his ability with a baffles to shoot at PS9 in the movement phase. I have a PS10 Poe who hasn't activated yet, in range of Quickdraw. Opponent shoots at Poe and lands a crit on him. THE CRIT. Damaged Cockpit. PS10 Poe now goes to PS0 Poe.

The question I am presenting here, which I am sure you have figured out by now, is does Poe get to move? Has he missed his opportunity to move this round? I would say yes, based on the current FAQ, but I would like to hear what you guys think.

LONG LIVE TEL

I feel like it's treated as more important that a ship activates in the movement phase than in the combat phase.

If you forget to move a ship in order, you do your best to wind back and move it. If you forget to shoot with a ship, it's gone.

Thus I wouldn't be surprised if FFG rule that you move next, and don't notice any inconsistency.

I agree with you that it's a poor ruling. There must be other ways a ship's PS can go up during the combat phase, and not all of them will thematically make sense that the pilot loses his shot.

I would say based on the precedent set by this FAQ, no. Ps0 has already moved, so Poe's a sitting duck for quickdraw's regular attack.

Doesn't the card explicitly state "starting with the round after you receive this card" ?

Yup. Though you can get a similar effect with vi and injured pilot fromcthe old deck (lose your ept, so pilot skill drops back down)

I mean it honestly doesn't seem like that big of a deal. Damaged Cockpit represents 2 cards out of 33 damage cards, and beyond that, what are the chances that Damaged Cockpit comes in face up? It really feels like a corner case. I'm honestly not sure i see the huge fuss.

Good catch.

I really don't like this ruling. The idea that a ship should be prevented from attacking at all (by this or by Boba stealing Adaptability) just seems counter to the general rule that everyone activates in the combat phase.

Bad ruling IMO. Obviously gonna stick to it but it would feel really, really bad if I got hit by it in a tourney whilst running Tel.
