New FAQ during a tournament: should we accept it or not?

By Samuraisantista, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hello,

My local Xwing league has its finals tomorrow (july 3rd) and I´d like to know if we should use the new FAQ or not.

Our tournament followed the FFG Rules and extended for amost 3 months. The players were allowed to use different lists at each game, but our rules say that in the finals (a swiss with our top 8 cut) the players can't change their lists.

Some of us got to the top 8 flying triple U-boats and so are complaining because the new FAQ changed the way those usually ships attack.

In my opinion we should use the new FAQ, but I´d like to hear what the Xwing community thinks about it.

Thanks

Take consensus, what would the group prefer, I will usually estblish house rules at my stor if I think the FAQ was wrong, but only if customers agree with me.

It's your league so it's up to you. It seems reasonable to use the same rules you've been using for the entirety of the league, especially if it's the kind of league where you have to fly the same list the whole time.

If you have been playing according to one set of rule I suggest you continue to use that set of rules to the completion of the tournament/series. Of course this would also apply to any new ships released since the start and with them the new rules they bring; if you new stuff is allowed the there IS a precedent for changing things in the middle but I think you see my point.

If you are REQUIRED to continue to use a list then I strongly recommend using the same rules that were in place when the list was locked in. Let's say you were in a shooting competition and were required to use the same rifle the entire time; does it really make sense to suddenly reach the last round and then say "I'm sorry but you're now out of the running because some outside party has decided that your rifle, or perhaps the ammo you've been using, is now considered illegal.

I had liked StevenOs comment until the rifle bit. What do rifles have to do with X-Wing? Now if those ship's lasers were lethal...

Sorry but the point is that if you're playing by the rules and the rules are consistent why should you change them just because some outside force thinks you're supposed to. Maybe I am injecting a bit of politics into that statement but I'm not for retroactively changing the rules.

Ummm, what?

Never change rules mid tournament, that's a bad idea.

That's also a bad idea... What happens when someone from out of town comes to a tournament?

This was a clarification in the FAQ from waaay back. It wasn't a rule change or errata. It's a fully accepted part of the game.

Because if Star Wars: Battlefront has shown us one thing, it's that projectile weapons can penetrate squad and personal shields.

So, Jesse, you're saying you don't allow rerolls of HLC crits at your store?!? Why?

All my customers interpret and follow (or disregard) rules based on consensus of the group for all games, hence the use of "house rules". Since we as a group all feel the FAQ got it wrong, in casual or non sanctioned in house tournament, we will use our own judgement, and probably turn our re-rolled HLC crits to hits. We also have had a no intentional draw rule, FFG made the right call on that one. Now if FFG would like to run an event in my store (please do, I have lots of table space), then we will follow the official FAQ for that event.

And every one in your "group" will get confused or at the worst, accused of cheating, because they've been playing the game incorrectly all this time.

What happens when a newcomer has a game at your store and wants to play by the actual rules? Or when a newbie decides to invest in the game and isn't aware that your "house" rules aren't the proper rules.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that house rules are a bad thing. I just don't think they should be used in a store environment.

It's almost like the word 'house' in the name came from somewhere, possibly from something to do with where those kind of rules should be used. Oh well, lost in the passage of time I guess.

That and the "house" that some people probably play at is really some place where they don't sleep. Even then "house" rules can imply a tight group that feel like family which maybe could live in one house.

The concept seems so foreign and yet so familiar...

Well my regular customers are kind of like family, pot lucks and all in the store during some holidays. We are a casual group so something minor like our collective disagreement with the HLC FAQ will not cause an argument. If there were a more significant potential game breaking disagreement between a regular who consistently spends money in my store and an out-of-towner hyper competitive player that no one has fun playing against, should be pretty obvious who to side with.

Which could end up being bad for you if/when you take blowback for not playing the universally consistent rules.

You may be the franchise that can get a good and loyal base but which doesn't follow any of the conventions that a given name implies which can bring about JUSTIFIED negative reviews from customers and from those higher up the food chain.

If you were the TO, I would expect you to side with the player who was playing to the rules, and not rule in favour of the one that isn't just because he lines your pockets, no matter how informal the tournament.

House rules at a store are a recipe for disaster. I know that you've stated that if you were running a sanctioned event, you'd enforce the rules even if you don't fully agree with them, so why not just join the other 99.999% of the players in the world that accept the FAQ rulings, and play by the rules all the time anyway?

As long as the house rules are visible and newcomers are made aware of them I really don't see how it could be a problem.

I'd like to know what happened in the OP's league final.
