Psychology, and how the scouts will still perform.

By nikk whyte, in X-Wing

So, scouts were just punished. Cast into the pits of uselessness alongside so many starvipers and sycks.

Or were they?

This nerf may have the same effect as the phantom nerf. Mostly psychological, it removes the "easy mode" from the build. Many users will abandon it, while the better players will simply adapt. Consider that, if scouts disappear as a meta staple, so will builds that can kill scouts in a single turn. This leaves an opening.

The deadeye/r4 combo still works, it just takes a little time to work now. The scouts previously wanted range 3, to maximize time on target and remove the extra evade dice. Unlearn this. Bum rush. Get into range one, fire your main weapon. R4 will still grant you the target lock. You won't be losing all your health, unless there's a swarm present.

Now, sloop around your enemy. You should be at range 2 now.

Focus up. Fire torpedoes.

Yeah or just use overclocked astromech.

Guys. Overclocked R4 still works with Deadeye, and it gives literally the exact same odds as the Agromech on a Plasma. It does make the Plasmas a hair more vulnerable to mass blanks, but top JM15k builds have been using it over Agromech for a while now. Triple jumps still works.

Pretty sure the Uboat list that won Hoth was primarily Overclocked anyways. So ya, they are fine.

People's reactions to this change showcases exactly how little people pay attention to subjects they like to talk about as if they were well versed in the area.

Go look at the lists placing in events. Don't just gloss over them the second you see 3 Contracted Scouts or 2 Scouts + X, actually look at what's on the Scouts. It's not always the Agromech. People were already utilizing things other then the Agromech, and still winning things.

You can still do r4 + deadeye, you just need to dump 3 points on recspec :P

Over clocked is a lot worse than r4 though, apart from the bid it got you v other jumps. The odds of focus plasma are lower than aggro protons, the late game is bunk, and you can't fire off a torp after a white sloop if you over clocked the turn prior

The build is far easier to deal with now, not counting the room freed up for feedback arrays

I think one.

While some people are jumping the gun, I don't think it's going to be just a matter of switching to the overclocked version. To be honest, the Overclocked build always felt like it was sacrificing it's matchup against a number of more traditional lists to improve the mirror matchup, and then counting on the Agromech build to keep lists that it was now weaker against out of the running.

If it feels that way, it's because that's LITERALLY WHY over clocked was ever used

It is considerably worse in almost every respect to Aggro except for being a point cheaper

If you're not bidding or buying something else with that point, aggro is vastly superior

I'm actually really excited to see the Scouts have a nerf that eliminates one of the easier choices in the build. I love the hell out of the JM5K dial and all its pilots, so having it be so universally loathed has been a bit of a drag.

But I hope this change, even with the lingering strength of Plasmas and OC, will make people branch out. Knocking off the points from Proton and Agro gives you a good deal to work with, whether you bring Feedbacks on your U Boats, beef up your Bumpmaster with support abilities like Manaroo, spring for some feedback Zs in place of the third ship, or further build up the Zuckuss, 4Lom, or Slaver some people are having luck with adding to a pair of U Boats.

I still think Scum will retain an overwhelming golden brown crossaint flavor until Wave 9, but I expect a lot more diversity in how those buttery pastries are garnished and what I'm expected to choke down with them.

Sadly highly doubt gammas will a thing :(

At least they're more on par now that deadeye scouts don't get r4 aggro protons

This was obviously a nerf to the meta dominator that was Kavil with Blaster Turret. That guy was unstoppable.

I'm seriously disappointed that anyone ever used Deadeye to acquire a target lock. According to the RRG attack sequence, the target does not become the defender until after costs are paid. This is what allows you to fire a Blaster Turret at Dark Curse. That was a big feature of the TFA rules. costs were paid, *then* the target became the "defender." We all noticed for Dark Curse, but somehow all failed to notice for Deadeye/R4, and then blamed FFG for making a ship too powerful, when actually everyone was just willfully ignoring the rules as they already existed in September 2015.

Sssssh.

If people think Scouts suck now, please let them think that. It means less Scouts.

Stop. I am sad. :(

You mean aside from the fact that the FAQ specifically said that was legal (See R4 Agromech+Blaster Turret in previous versions)?

It's likely that ruling was pre-TFA rules and no one noticed to change it back when the attack sequence changed.

That's the hope, really :P

Same as what transpired with phantoms

Meh. A real Jumpmaster nerf would have been removing the EPT from the Contracted Scout.

Not really

Apart from the deadeye +salvaged astro combo, you can't really abuse that ept slot

I mean, you'd get rid of basically the only effective use of intimidation I guess

Unless i missed something a singular card the uboats use got nerfed. I see far more uboats with overclocked than agromech anyway.

Tripboats will still be a menace unless something in wave9 just utterly craps on them, or the 2 new ships in there are vastly better (which would be bs) and everyone dumps the uboats by default.

The deadeye/r4 combo still works, it just takes a little time to work now.

How does it work. You not getting the TL now at all when you fire the torpedoes with Focus for Agromech. It works for overclocked.
