Races from the other books!

By baterax, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

Ok so more players are joining my campaign. Since this is a temporary campaign with the intent of learning the system, I'm not trying to keep it super consistent and tight with the same group and stuff.

I'm welcoming all sorts of ideas and using that to hone my skills as a GM to provide what the players need and make things fun.

So the most recent thing that's come up is using races from the other books now. In F&D, they state that sure, you could use any race as long as they aren't restricted in some sort of way with using the Force, like a Droid.

And then there's Duty from Age of Rebellion, and Obligation from Edge of the Empire.

How would you guys do this? Would you allow the race and then just do Morality as if it was a race in F&D? Or incorporate Duty/Obligation into F&D?

And are there any other things I should consider when allowing this?

Species options are totally distinct from the obligation/duty mechanics. Those are more tied into the themes of the games and the careers.

Incorporating Duty and Obligation are separate choices more in line with the themes you are wishing to explore. Read the GM's chapter on info on how and why to include them. As for the species, they aren't tied to those traits. None of the species in any of the lines are tied to those lines signature traits. Use them as you deem fit

All official published races are allowed in my games, and some that aren't official, too.

For a new group of new players try to stick to a single Character Mechanic (Obligation, Duty or Morality) and PC's can never benefit from more than one when creating their character (No extra XP from taking more Obligation whilst also reducing Duty to get even more XP). Basically ask all players to use only the Character Creation rules from a single core book.

Species on the other hand are entirely universal. The line they appear in will determine the overall feel of the fluff text regarding that species background, but the actual stat blocks are all the same. In fact opening up to all available books is a great way to encourage diversity within the group.

The one thing i would be very hesitant to allow is a Droid with a Force and Destiny Career. If someone wants to play a Droid then they are much better served picking a Career from the other 12 available, choosing one that fits within the theme of the campaign. Droids can technically start in a Force Career or take a FaD Specialisation as an out of career spec, but they can never have a force rating. They can even purchase Talents that require the Force to be used, they just cant use them! thematically this could be seen as some kind of training droid, schooled in the Shi-Cho form or perhaps Makashi, all the other Specialisations in FaD have alternatives in other books that give a droid more options.

Thank you for the inspiration! I had not thought of using droids like specialized trainers, regardless of their Force Rating. A droid wearing (Jedi-like) robes with a sword (or lightsaber) certainly can make for in interesting encounter!

Honestly though i would start somewhere else first for that character, then pick up one of the saber trees as a second Spec. Good places to start would be Commando, Marauder or Gadgeteer to make for a very tough character, then Makashi for all those wonderful Parry talents.

Actually Instructor from the Commander book is another good choice, So is Infiltrator if you choose the talent path down the Righthand side of the tree

And the final one thats quite an interesting combo is the Makashi/Performer specialisation, the combination of Dodge, Distracting Behaviour, Coordinated Dodge and Feint is going to make triggering Improved Parry much much easier too.

Im imagining this as starting character (185xp spent):

B 4, A 1, I 1, C 1, W 2, P 3

Charm 1, Coercion 1, Lore 1, Outer 1, Perception 1, Vigilance 1, Cool 1, Coordination 1, Lightsaber 2

Resist Disarm

Makashi Technique

The if we use Knight Level (150xp):

Feint 2

Duelist Training

Parry

Improved Parry

Performer Spec

Distracting Behaviour

Dodge

Natural Athlete

Grit 2

Coordinated Dodge

Coordination 2

Start with a Training Saber Pike for that defensive quality

So this droid can:

Add automatic boost to Melee and Lightsaber when only engaged with 1 opponent.

spend 2 advantage or triumph on failed melee (Brawl, Lightsaber and Melee) attacks to upgrade by 2 the opponents next check

add 1 automatic threat to opponent check for a maneuver

add 1 setback to melee attacks against it

Flip a Destiny point to add 2 automatic failure to opponents next combat check as an incidental

suffer 1 strain to upgrade the next attack against it by 1 for an incidental

Parry if opponent hit, then spend 3 threat or Despair to automatically hit back.

Has a natural Soak of 5, 14 Wounds and 14 Strain, throw some armour on and thats a dam good soak. Credits from gameplay are spent on cortosis armour and cybernetic legs/arms

Thats a possible 3 upgrades, 1 setback and 1 automatic threat, use a weapon with defence or defensive armour and this is one hard core duelling droid. A bit more xp and you can focus on the social side of things, and picking up a few more Parry ranks, also another Coordination rank (or 2... thats 4 automatic failure to the next attack to hit you for only a Destiny Point, better than just a single upgrade)

Yes its hyper focused, but thats what droids do!
