Looking for good 3-player variants...

By f0rbiddenc00kie, in X-Wing

Anyone have any good 3-player variants that involve the following?

1.) satellite captures

2.) cargo retrievals from space station
3.) escort shuttle VS k ill shuttle VS bounty hunters
4.) some other cool objective
I want an objective that discourages the most common problems in 3-player free-for-alls (aka turtling and ganging up on each other), and I could really use some help.

I have heard that there is a 3 player mission available in the IG-2000 expansion that is really fun.

There is, and it's definitely not bad. However, it's just "last man standing" with a small tweak to spice things up. There's no extra objectives or anything. I'm ideally looking for something with asymmetrical win conditions, although just a simple variant of "collect stuff for points" or other objective works, too.

I've not played much 3-player x-wing but the best thing I've tried was a "he who does the most damage wins" game where you can win even if you've already lost all your ships, though it's sonewhat tedious to keep track of points whenever a ship takes damage.

So take 100 points of Rebels and 100 Points of Imp with an objective in the center they have to pick up and take to the other side of the table. The third person brings 50 points of scum they can assist ether side or they can try to steal the objective to win.

Also 25 points a person no upgrades is a woot and plays fast

Also look through mission control. https://tools.fantasyflightgames.com/xwing/ see if there is anything good on there.

EDIT search for this mission,

King of the Hill

Latest Version

A three or four-player mission for control of a central resource.

I was aware of the King of the Hill map since it was highly liked. I was NOT aware of his other 2 maps that were also 3 players. I wish Mission Control had a tag system for finding what you're looking for, haha.

That looks fun. I might have to try that out with my kids.

I tried the King of the Hill before with my brothers. Can confirm that it is most fun and very balanced. I would highly suggest playing with the optional rule that does 1 point of damage to all units inside at the end of turn after points are scored. This discourages building squads composed largely of small fighters and gives big ships a chance to shine in this mode. Came down to the wire for us. We all loved it.

I think the way to run a 3 player variant is to give point for point in scoring but double points for points killed from both lists. So 25 pts from each player would be worth 100 instead of 50 pts. This incentivizes players to attack each list and not just gang up.

Space Whale Hunt!

https://tools.fantasyflightgames.com/xwing/htmlpreview/732/

I wrote a mission where two hunters are competing to kill a transport and steal its cargo while one more player tries to defend it.

It works on the far ends of the 3x6 space. The two hunters have more points and are also cometing against each other, while the defender has a smaller fleet and is trying to stop either of them from succeeding.

Meanwhile.... The space whale floats and activates moves randomly, making it dangerous at close ranges.

I played the Dengar/Jumpmaster mission with three players. I took the JM5K, and two others split the rebel force, and it worked out quite well.
