Thoughts on a Scum army?

By Petrus81, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Hey there!

I have mainly been playing Rebels and Empire on the few times I played skirmish but yesterday I got my Twin Shadows and Bespin gambit boxes in the mail and got the urge to make a Scum army!

However Id like some tips and pointers from more experienced players and mainly on command cards and in what packs I get those command cards!

This is my army so far:

Temp Alliance 1

Boba Fett 13

Bossk 8

HK Assassin Droid 8

Tusken Raider 5

C-3P0 2

Gideon 3

If you don't mind buying another box, I'd take rHired Guns over rTuskens. Also allows you room for an upgrade. Devious Scheme is always good, but Last Resort is nothing to sneeze at. I've also used Explosive Weaponry with either Boba or HKs for more AOE damage.

Whats the point cost on the hired guns? And are they any good?

All of your attackers other than the Tuskens are Hunters, so I quickly threw together my initial ideas:

3 Mandalorian Tactics
2 Grisly Contest
2 Trandoshan Terror
2 Cripple
2 Dirty Trick
1 Merciless
1 Price on Their Heads
1 Capture the Weary
1 Negation
0 Element of Surprise
0 Fleet Footed
0 Take Initiative
0 Urgency
0 Opportunistic
0 Wild Attack

By the way, here is an excellent IA squad builder: http://ia-armies.com/ You can filter the cards that you see in various ways, such as by faction for Deployment Cards or by Hunters (as I did here) or Troopers, etc for Command Cards. I encourage you to experiment with this tool, because it's extremely useful, and also quite user-friendly.

Also, when you're building your squad and you click on a card, it will show you where you get that card...it's written in small letters under the card itself. Unfortunately, that information isn't shown after you save your squad, so you'll need to separately record what sets you need to buy.

And if you're interested, here is a link to the squad that I built while answering this question for you. http://ia-armies.com/army/CA9fvt7d

They cost 4 for Regulars or 6 for Elites. Personally, if I'm going to get Hired Guns I'll usually go for the regulars, since I'm using them more for their high speed and objective-grabbing-potential than for their offensive capabilities.

If I wanted an offensive choice for 6pts I'd probably go with an elite Nexu...they are quite solid when they start the game with a Focus and can get in there for a nice 3-dice strike against just about anyone you need to hit...and then put an automatic Bleed on the target and another 2 damage on another because of Cleave. I call it "the Nexu Missile."

And yes, IMHO it's always worth considering regular Hired Guns as part of the final 4 points of your squad. But don't ignore the Mercenary skirmish upgrades and attachments, because some of them can be quite strong.

Ooooohh that sounds great! I will start experimenting with this right away! Thank you good sir!

Has anyone actually used cards like Cripple, Merciless, and Capture the Weary and not thought they were trash?

At least Dirty Trick doesn't require an action, but it still gives the opponent a choice, so they can just take the stun if it doesn't really matter.

2 random thoughts:

- I like the Elite Tuskens much more than the regulars because +1 Damage is worth 2 more points (they also get a health boost)

- Boba is fun to play but doesn't do much damage because he only attacks once per turn. Consider something else like more HKs or a Bantha if you have them.

Yeah, I'd remove Boba for 13 points and use them for this.

Upgrade the rTusken Raiders to eTusken Raiders for 2 more pts. Then add in a second eTusken Raiders for 7 pts. And that leaves you 4 more points...and look...Greedo is 4 pts! :)

So that gives you 1 more activation and 2 more figures plus makes your previous 2 figures even better.

Just my thoughts.

Hmmm might be a good idea ^^ But I might go for Hired Guns instead of greedo =P

I applaud the efforts of or small, but supportive community here. Really to do you service, what type of army are you trying to build? Tournament or casual or somewhere in between?

which sets and expansions do you have?

One thing I like about the starter set, is that you really get 3 full armies (more if you mix and match) in the box

Scum face a few challenges that the other two factions don't in that they don't have reliable focus or movement (pushers) like 3po Gideon and officers etc. they also have a harder time getting through command cards.

I agree that removing Boba would allow for a stronger squad.

However, our OP here is still starting out and getting a feel for and how the game works and what he likes. I think it's probably best to let him play whatever he wants and get a feel for things from there. Once we start changing peoples' squads for them and turning even their start-up squads into meta-contenders, we're basically encouraging them to net-deck right from the start, rather than encouraging them to learn the game the best way they can. If he wants to get into competitive play right away then there will still be a learning period, where he needs to get a feel for the flow of a game and some of the essential tactics like timing, when to commit, and anticipating how and when his opponent will attack...none of those things can be learned via net-decking.

I have all the expansion boxes and I have Bossk and Boba Fett Villain packs. I am just doing casual skirmishes at my place. I have only tried scum army with the core box before but now that I have more scum models it seem way more fun to play but just wanted some pointers from more experienced players and mostly on command cards and in what packs you get them ^^

I wouldn't give up on Fett right away. He's a really fun and cool figure to play with and can do some stuff no other figure can do. He might not be the 'most' competitive deployment card, but he's a strong model that can do a lot of stuff.

As thereisnotry basically said. Try stuff out. Figure out for yourself as well. More often than not, something is deemed bad due to group-think and overthinking. As I said earlier, the only think I'd change was rTuskens to rHired Guns or Greedo and an upgrade of some sort. But play around with stuff and see what works for you. :)
