Full Sets - Possible / Advisable ?

By Crusaderlord, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

i wonder how many people actually have a full collection (wow) - not many i am sure.

Its a tad tempting to do especially with the new app bar filling up with each set - but availability and cost is a big preventer. Weighing up the value of having everything v getting another fantasy dungeon game is also a consideration.

I only tend to buy lieutenants if i really like the model and want to use them as a proper main boss.

I feel like i have a lot of Descent in my cupboard - but its scratching the surface in many regards.

Might be interesting to see what people choose to buy as priority between expansion packs if they cant get them all. I thought it may be nice to compare lists. My owned list is :

Core Set

Lair of the Wyrm

Labyrinth of Ruin

Trollfens

Shadow of Nerekhall

Forgotten Soul / Natures Ire / Dark Elements - love the co-op side of the game more

Bolgoreth / Ariad Spider / Ardus (just purchased) - favourite lieutenant models used to also design my own dungeon crawls

Treaty of Champions - my favourite set of heroes & monsters in one pack (a very recent purchase and only one of these sets i have bought)

Next up on the list will be - Mists of Bilehall to continue an undead theme

i wonder how many people actually have a full collection (wow) - not many i am sure.

... depends what you call 'not many' ... in percentage of all players having bought the base box... yes most probably not many.. less than 1%

in raw numbers on the other side.. I'm ready to bet they (we) could be numbered in hundreds.. if not in thousands... ;-P

is this many or not? ......

i was actually thinking less than 100 might have bought absolutely everything released - as not everyone is likely to be into co-op or maybe having all the lieutenants - but maybe the draw of collecting is so strong that they are all irresistible. i hadn't thought about it myself at all until the app came out and already i have bought one more heroes and monster pack. Sadly i wont get everything but its nice to to know that some have a full set.

I try to paint each set up before buying another - this helps stop me spending !

Clever move to release the app i think as it may have boosted sales of all expansions.

I have every expansion and every hero/monster pack.

Have been awaiting the last 9 LT-packs for ever, but they are now in the shipping face, so I'm expecting them soon enough!

My group has not yet played MoB, but if I were to buy my first expansion pack knowing what I know now it would be SoN without a doubt. :)

Being a ridiculous completionist, I own a full collection of runebound, descent 1st edition and descent 2nd edition. Owning everything gives a ton of variety, both the heroes and the overlord have so many heroes/classes/monsters/items to choose from that you're never at risk of playing a quest the same way twice. The drawback of having everything is that storage becomes a big problem; and sleeving up all 1100 cards (I did this just the other week!) becomes pretty costly. I've put all the map tiles in the shadow of nerekhall box, all the monsters in a plastic storage box, and everything else in the base descent box. My setup time for a game session is roughly 20-30mins, which includes sorting all the map tiles as well as lining up all the monster figures for easy access.

EDIT: The most useless thing in my descent collection however is the coop adventures, I believe we have played through each of them once, and now with Road to Legend readily available, I don't imagine we'll ever play them again.

Well, I agree that cost and availability is a pretty big hurdle in the "gotta catch 'em all" department. Especially availability seems to be an issue with a lot of FFG stuff lately, not just Descent. I wanted to get one of the Mansions of Madness expansions and it's just not something that exists in Sweden, it seems.

Since I tend to want to get "sets" of things that match eachother, it's even more annoying. For example, if I'm getting Lieutenants, I want to get all the Lieutenants for a given Campaign. But there's no way to get all the Core Set Lieutenants at once. I was considering getting all the Lieutenants for Labyrinth of Ruin, but then it turned out that Labyrinth of Ruin uses Core Lieutenants, too. Pretty frustrating.

I first got the Core Game, and shortly after got Labyrinth of Ruin mostly for the extra heroes and the general expansion content. For a long time, though, Descent went generally unplayed, but a couple of months ago I managed to get a group going with some classmate acquaintances.

This lead to our (me and my gf:s) first major upgrade to Descent, and we're currently sitting at:

Core
Labyrinth of Ruin

Shadows of Nerekhall

Manor of Ravens
H&MC: Oath of the Outcast
H&MC: Crown of Destiny
H&MC: Crusade of the Forgotten
H&MC: Treaty of Champions

And the next big upgrade we're getting will probably be:

Mists of Bilehall
The Chains that Rust

H&MC: Guardians of Deephall

H&MC: Shards of Everdark

Ardus Ix'Erebus Lieutenant Pack

Zarihell Lieutenant Pack

Kyndrithul Lieutenant Pack

Skarn Lieutenant Pack.

After which I was thinking I'd run an undead-themed campaign.

There's just so much stuff to get and so many things that go with other things, so you want them together. Right now I'm really lamenting not having Lair of the Wyrm and Bonds of the Wild, just so I could run Shadows of Nerekhall with Fire Imps and Hellhounds, and I want to have The Trollfens just so I can have Plague Worms for my Mists of Bilehall/The Chains that Rust campaign, but if I get The Trollfens, I also want Visions of Dawn, for Ogres and Trolls.

It's nerve-wrecking.

In time, I do hope to own everything beside the co-op content, though. I'm loving Descent 2nd Ed. and if the line continues, I hope it's a revision, not a new edition. My only possible gripe is that the narrative focus could be a bit stronger. I love how Shadows of Nerekhall has a proper introduction for the players and such, so the line seems to be moving in that direction. I also love how Mists of Bilehall/The Chains that Rust can be combined into one major campaign. The dual focus of the smaller expansions really does them no service, and I was sad to see that I'll never actually come to use the beautiful map on the back of the Manor of Ravens quest guide. I was hoping it worked as a small-campaign-within-a-campaign, but it doesn't.

All things being equal, though, it could be worse. We could be playing Imperial Assault. That's not a fate I'd wish on my richest enemy. It's not half the age of Descent 2nd Ed. and it's already got enough piecemeal stuff to topple Bill Gates.

I have the core game, all the big boxes and small boxes expansions, all lieutenants and the campaign book.

I don't have any co-ops neither any h&m collection packs. I think my next step will be grabing the h&m, mainly those with new monsters.

I´m all for going all-in on games that I know will hit the table regularly, games that everybody enjoy playing, games that have such depth so I actually think about the game even when I am not playing, and games that have a strong community (quality community) where you can find support, guidance and alternative ways of playing.

So yeah, I own everything D2E. But I didn't buy all that in a big bang (it would have been incredibly costly).

I also own the D&D adventure games, which is also quite expensive when you put 4 big box games together, but that's also because I´m a sucker for variety.

I didn't get the app (I tried it just for fun, but uninstalled it) so that product line is dead to me, but the physical stuff I will gladly invest in, until both my playgroups tell me they need a big break from the game, which they hinted could well be in 50 years when we´ve all retired and playing the game in a desert isle!

Finally I get the freaking goblin lieutenant on the last reprint !!! The last h&m pack arrived today.

Well, I was buying slowly, one pack or expansion per month/ratio, to not hurt so much my wallet :P

A advice, if you want the lieutenants for the core box, it's better pay attention on the last arrive, the search for Descent products increased exponentially because of the app. Have tons of friends and new players buying all stuff, and the big villains for the released campaigns (splig, merrick, alric), are the top ones in their lists.

I'm missing a few H&M packs which will likely be part of my order when Chains that Rust is released later this year. I don't understand how people can control themselves to NOT own everything this game has to offer.

The desire i have to painted up all i buy curbs me successfully. So far the core set, wyrm, trollfens and ruins are all painted. Then i hit a brick wall and haven't yet painted nerekhall but i have just started to look at that again since the app came out. Then i just bought Treaty of Champions and am really looking forward to painting the heroes in this set especially Grey Ker. So i am already backed up with with about 25+ models to do. Funny thing is i still crack out the core set on its own more than use all the expansions - its easier to take around to a group (fairly rare occurrence really) and sometimes i cant bother with sorting all the bits back into their boxes again - i should merge it all really into one set now the app works using anything you own.

I have everything as well.

With regard to expansions, I would always go with boxed expansions first, before buying H&M packs, because they add classes and campaigns, which is imo the most limited content for Descent.

So my ranking is:

expansions I own:
Nerekhall (best campaign and awesome classes and heroes)

Labyrinth of Ruins (fun classes, Basic II deck, haven't played the campaign yet)

Liar of the Wyrm (two of the best classes and heroes without being OP, unique monsters)

Manor of Ravens (very cool mini-campaign and tile-theme, good classes, ok heroes, human monsters (bandits)).

expansions I don't own:

Chains that Rust (not out yet, but what we have seen from classes, monsters and campaigns, this seems to be very interesting)

Trollfens (I don't quite like the heroes and classes of this expansion, monsters are ok, traditional mini-campaign)

Mists of Bilehall (no heroes and classes, cool monsters and supposedly very good, but in every case very unique 1st Act of a Campaign)

For my birthday I got 2 H&M packs (Crusade of the Forgotten and Treaty of Champions) which grew my Descent collection a lot and I feel it has pushed it beyond sound collection to a quite excessive collection. So I think the box expansions really suffice unless you have a lot of disposable income and enough space in your house then by all means get everything if it brings you joy.

Still the bar in the app is not even at 50% for my collection, which I found quite funny given all the space my collection takes up right now and how excessive it feels.

I own everything except first two H&M packs and co-ops, and I am going to paint it! Eventually :-D

Like several above me, I also own every big and small expansion, all the H&M packs, the three co-op packs, even the hardcover quest book. I even own the 6 lieutenants from the core game.

EDIT: The most useless thing in my descent collection however is the coop adventures, I believe we have played through each of them once, and now with Road to Legend readily available, I don't imagine we'll ever play them again.

Somewhat this.

I thought the coop packs were a good use of existing tiles, and gave me the chance to play as a hero for once - I'm normally the OL. They were interesting but brutal.

I absolutely love the RotL app, and will likely use it far more often than we used the coop packs.

EDIT: I also own Decent 1 core and the Conversion Kit. Because of this, I had never bought the H&M packs. When I found out that RotL didn't accept the Conversion Kit, I bought all 9 H&M packs. Win for FFG!

I have the full complete set of Descent 2.0 with all expansions, heroes and monster packs, and the last of the Lieutenant Packs will arrive July 5th. In total I have sunk over $500 into this game, but it is my wife and I's board game of choice, and was money very well spent.

I also own Descent 1.0 Core set, along with the Conversion Kit. And like the poster above me, when I found out RtL didn't accept the conversion kit, immediately purchased every H&M pack... FFG is a good company, with good customer service and quality products so I don't mind investing in a great board game that has and will continue to get great support.

I own all the Descent stuff, but I purchased it over the course of about 2 years.

Also bought a 7771 Plano Box to store the components. It still barely manages to contain everything but the manuals and tiles.. but its getting pretty **** near bursting now :P

There´s also more stuff you can add to the game besides the standard components. Plastic treasure chests for the search tokens, minatures for the villagers, familiars.

What I´m currently looking for, is a way to mark figures with conditions. I don't really like the token solution to keep track of conditions, and even damage on monsters/doors is hard to represent. I mean, it's not hard, but it can get unpractical.

For the conditions I was thinking about something to put underneath the figure, like a flat base with a thin vertical metallic wire attached to it and then hanging something 3D there. Like, something floating above the figure. Something I could paint. Kickstarter sees the release of a few things like condition dices, and sometimes 3D models picturing conditions, but I have yet to find something that would look appealing to me.

The only things I don't have are Shards of Everdark and stewards of the secret. I love every last bit of it. I never had first edition, so I didn't need the conversion kit and I loved all the monster and hero packs.

Maybe some kind of colored clip bases (like cool mini or not uses) or base rings would work. You can even build some 3d things ontop of these switchable bases, if you want to go that mile.

I started my collection last December. I try to organisieren me a full set and have painted a full set. At the Moment i buy the big Box expansions with it Lieutenant and afterwards there will be all the H&M boxes... long way to go :D

Could be an idea. I´m pretty sure the clip bases from Blood Rage are a bit too large compared to the base of the Descent heroes, but it would be quite cheap indeed to get a bunch of these, assuming the mini can stand steadily on it. Maybe they wouldn't be that visible, though, since all of my bases are painted according to the archetype.

But any base would do as long as long as it works as a standee for the condition "figure", e.g. some basic 3D-printed shape, matching the art on the condition card.

The OP was talking about financial investment in the game. Does buying a 3D printer fall into some kind of "Descent budget for the year" category? :)

If I had one I would be making so many things for this game.. :P

It is definitely possible to "complete" this game, but I don't advise it. I have everything except the lieutenant packs. In my opinion, the lieutenant packs add so little to the gameplay that they're not worth it- however, I happen to be one of those people who couldn't care less if I'm using a token or a miniature to represent a lieutenant.

With the exception of peril effects in RtL bringing in agents, you only use a maximum of one plot deck per entire campaign. You've got to play 6 campaigns just to get through the lieutenants of the base game. Then there's 6 more "small box" lieutenants (Valyndra, Bol'goreth, Skarn, Zarihell, Ardus, Kyndrithul), 8 more big box lieutenants (Raythen, Serena, Ariad, Queen Ariad, Verminous, Mirklace, Rylan, Tristayne.) If I had started using plot decks during my first Descent campaign (they hadn't been released yet) there would still be half of the plot decks that had never seen the light of day.

Some people value miniatures- I value use in gameplay. I don't see the lieutenant packs of offering that, so it's too much of an investment "just to have them". (That being said, I have a few and I have really enjoyed using them- Mirklace, Queen Ariad, Bol'goreth, Zachareth, Skarn, and Alric.)

I will dare not agree with big Z :) . plot decks when wisely chosen and timely played add some deathly possibilities to the Overlord, The point is to not overflow your heroes with tokens. At the beginning i didn't see any interest to buy them but now i wouldn t be able to by pass them.
