Rejoining the game, what to get

By dboeren1, in X-Wing

I'm considering getting into X-Wing. I have a small collection from years ago, and I'm looking for help from players who are up on the current state of things to decide what are the priority ships to get. Here's what I have for my Imperials:

5x TIE Fighter

1x TIE Advanced

1x TIE Interceptor

1x TIE Defender

1x TIE Phantom

I'm also open to Scum & Villainy, what would be considered the important ships for them? I have one Y-Wing for refit purposes.

Well A) thats unreadable so you may want to change the text.

B) DEFENDERS!!!!

Also a Raider for his awesomeness of the dark side and all-around evilness: Emperor Palpatine! Of course, you then need a ride for his wrinklliness, so I suggest a Lamdba-class shuttle expansion as well.

Just be kind to your wallet and pet it one last time before you slit it open from one end to the other... um... this is darker than I intended it to be... err... have fun!

It depends on a few things.

The two things you need to set out: Budget and how competitive do you want to play?

Imp Aces - gets you more interceptors and all the important Imperial cards like PTL, Hull Upgrade

Imp Vets - Defender fix and Bomber fix and crackshot, etc.

TIE F/O - Omega Leader and Juke and Comm Relay. Nuff said.

Yep. For Imperials, I would suggest:

  • The Raider (for Palpatine, Advanced Targeting Computer, Juno Eclipse, Darth Vader crew, and the TIE Advanced title...the Raider itself is pretty awesome in Epic also.)
  • The Lambda Shuttle. Because they are awesome.
  • The Gozanti. There are some great TIE pilots in there.
  • Imperial Veterans. To help out your Defender, and to get a Bomber.

Edit: wurms is right. I forgot about Imperial Aces. Another great expansion. Two more Interceptors with a couple of great pilots (especially Carnor Jax) and 2x Push the Limit.

Raider looks cool but pricy, is it really worth the price of getting five new small ships instead?

If we need a number let's say up to $150, I can always add more later on. And yes, I like to be competitive. But I also like combined arms and being able to run a variety of lists so I don't want to spam a ton of any one model. I've already got 5 TIEs which were part of the collection when I originally bought it used, don't expect to have more than 2 of anything else probably.

Not planning to do Epic at all.

Back in the day I thought the Decimator was kind of the hot thing for Imperials, are those no longer popular?

If you don't plan on playing Epic at all, then the Raider might not be worth it. The Gozanti is also probably not worth it if you don't play Epic. Given that, I might prioritize the Imperial Aces and Imperial Veterans. The TIE Advanced Prototype (Inquisitor) is good if you decide to not get the Raider. It fills the roll that Darth Vader fills pretty well.

If you don't have the Force Awakens Core set, then I would also strongly recommend that!

If competitive, you need a Starviper from Scum, possibly a Khiraxz. From Imperials, I'd reach for Imp Aces, and at least an FO and a TAP

What's a TAP? If it's the TIE Advanced I've got one of those.

Also to clarify, to be more competitive, you need the scum ships for Autothrusters and Khirzx has Crackshot EPT cards

What's a TAP? If it's the TIE Advanced I've got one of those.

The Inquisitor's TIE. TAP is shorthand for TIE Advanced Prototype, which is a separate ship.

I would probably look at:

Imperial Veterans (good stuff for Bombers and Defenders)

Imperial Aces (More Interceptor stuff, handy)

TIE/FO expansion (Pretty much a stand alone with a great prebuilt option in Omega Leader)

Inquisitor's TIE (The Inquisitor is great)

StarViper (Autothrusters is great for Interceptors and Advanced Prototypes)

Can you use the StarViper with an Imperial force? I thought it was only for Scum and I don't see it allowing it in the squadron builder I'm looking at. I'm going to do either Imperials or Scum but not both, at least not yet. Or if it's just for the cards then I'd probably put that at a bit lower priority and pick up up when I'm ready to start an actual Scum force.

So if I get Aces, Veterans, TIE/fo, Inquisitor, and Lambda Shuttle that's $93 @ CSI. If I drop Lambda it's down to about $70, pretty reasonable.

You want a starvipers to get autothrusters for the interceptors.

Also...the tie fo single pack is important to get omegaleader.it has his important upgrades in it

I would lower the priority of the Lambda Shuttle if you aren't getting the Raider. The Lambda is good because of its crew slots.

Raider also has the TIE Adv (Vader version) title in it. So if you aren't wanting a raider I'd look at an FO, Imp vets, TAP, then decide if you want a Starviper just for Autothrusters cards, or even consider a Decimator

Sounds like a plan then. Aces, Veterans, TIE/fo, Inquisitor for the first wave, and $30 of whatever to get to the free shipping level. Might need to get a Millennium Falcon too because Millennium Falcon. It's my 5 year old son's favorite ship. Decimator wouldn't be bad either, it's nice to have one big ship.

Thanks for all your input!

In addition to the above advice, I might add the odd suggestion of the Slave-I, and followed with the Scum Most Wanted - that let's you play the ship in two factions and includes handy upgrades. All the box sets (aces, veterans) do offer a lot. That said, if you like tie Swarms the Gozanti is a solid choice - it gives you a really nice squadron of Tie pilots. But, that's up to you. Some people have lots of Tie fighters because they seem to come with everything and multiply in the case when you've collected Imperials, others have them because they are really good to fly.

My advice is buy what ever it is that you want, practice with it, and then start looking at expanding. Winning and having fun is only based partly on ship choices and card collecting. Moving, bluffing, predicting, placing obstacles, planning, reacting, is the rest. Well, that and fickle dice.

A couple of things about the Empire...

First off, if you're planning to pick up the Milennium Falcon because it's your son's favorite ship, you might be interested to know that it's about to be re-released. "Heroes Of The Resistance" is supposed to come out in September (if the shipping dates are accurate), and it will have the new falcon from Force Awakens (square radar dish) with Rey as a pilot, along with a new Han Solo pilot and a new Chewie pilot. It may be worth the while to wait for that and pick up the shiny new Falcon instead of the old one.

Secondly, if you intend to fly the TIE Advanced at all in a competitive way, you need the Raider. If not, the Raider can be put on the back burner. The TIE Advanced fix brings them from barely competent up to very effective. Also, Emperor Palpatine is a very good crew.

Thirdly, the Decimator is only out of favor right now because it has no agility. In competitions, we see a lot of high-powered attacks and munitions which would burn down a Decimator very quickly. That said, flown well, you can make it a very effective ship, and the pack comes with nice cards.

And fourthly, autothrusters are the reason to buy a Starviper. It really is a very important upgrade if you plan to fly interceptors like Soontir Fel. If you aren't, and are going more for a TIE swarm, you don't need it at all. But it's a very useful card to have, and until another pack includes it... Starviper.

EDIT - Almost forgot, but Imperial Veterans hits tomorrow, and that will instantly make Defenders and Bombers very interesting to fly. I'd put that at the top of your list, since it would give you a second defender, and make them very competitive. Two defenders would make up 60-80 points of highly effective ships, so you wouldn't need to buy much else to make things work.

Is the new Falcon or its pilots supposed to be better in some way than the old one? Or are we just guessing?

Thanks for the note on the Raider/Advanced connection. I'll think about it, but it is a high priced model. Probably going to have to be part of a later order.

We don't know that much about the heroes pack yet.

Decimator is still hot, although still you may want emporer palpy if your going to be competitive.... then again, you don't nessacarily need him. There was a RAC/Whisper list that came in second at the Durham Regional. And Double Deci's have been doing rather well as of late.
