Using a melee attack: can I Cleave on non-adjacent target?

By thereisnotry, in Imperial Assault Rules Questions

I have a question regarding the Inquisitor's Cleave ability. If the Inquisitor is making a melee attack and rolls enough Accuracy to reach a non-adjacent figure, can he use his Cleave on that non-adjacent figure? Or is he required to use it on another adjacent figure, since it's a melee attack?

I'm sure this question will come up at some point so I'm just trying to get ahead on it now.

The Cleave keyword appears on some cards. If the target of this
figure's attack suffers one or more damage (damage), the attacker may
choose a different hostile figure or object that he could target
for an attack. The chosen figure or object suffers the amount of
damage listed.

Melee without reach: Adjacent

Melee with reach: within 2 spaces and in line of sight

Ranged: within the accuracy of the original attack and in line of sight.
