Inquisitor / Ryad & 30 points?

By Storgar, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Inquisitor, PTL, title, Auto Thrusters 31pts

Ryad, PTL, x7, EU 39pts

I been looking through a number of ships and would like thoughts on these:

Option A

Tie Adv Alozen, title Adv TC, EU 30pts

only tried him once and didn't get the free TL that often but practice might improve it, lacks multi actions if you don't get TL and would struggle against high PS.

Option B

Tie Adv Pro Valen Rudor, PTL, AT 28pts

Looks maneuverable and defensive, lacks power with only 2Att dice

Option C

Tie Bomber Deathfire, Ex mun, Proton Torp, Cluster Mis, Prox mine, GC 30pts

Looks like a hard hitter and would be good with the mines, would get targeted early - could he do enough damage before he died?

Option D

Tie Defender, Delta, x7, ion engine 29pts

Fairly basic, decent all rounder for blocking, attacking, defending.

Option E

Wampa with Targeting comp & Academy 28pts

Academy for blocking firepower weak, wampa basically gets 4 or 6 dice depending on range to try and get the crit. Could worry aces with low hull.

Option F

Interceptor, Carnor Jax, Juke, Auto thrusters 30pts

At R1 could be nasty, would really have to try and keep out of arcs which could be tough without PTL.

Option G

Interceptor, Royal gaurd, PTL, AT, stealth, title 30pts

More maneuverable than Jax but does nothing special other than a 3 dice att which can dart around. 3 hull is clearly a worry though.

Option H

Tie phantom Sigma, Enhanced scopes Adv cloak 30pts

Super blocker, might die quick.

Option J

Punisher Cutlass, FCS, Ex mun, Plasma torp, seismic charges LRS 30pts

If it lives long enough to make use of FCS could be handy, an obvious easy target

Option K

Tie FO, OL, Juke, Comm relay, Stealth device 29pts

A decent ship that I need more practice with, trick is staying on ship with TL and avoiding being shot by the others.

Out of interest, why Ryad? She is a cool pilot but I think Vessery synergises much better with the Inquisitor. Many of the choices you have listed benefit from Target Locks one way or another so how about the following:

34 Inquisitor (25), PTL (3), title (1), Auto Thrusters (2), Proton Rockets (3)

37 Vessery (35), Veteran Instincts (1), /D (0), Tractor beam (1)

29 Omega Leader (21), Juke (2), Comm relay (3), Stealth device (3)

Omega Leader and the Inquisitor paint targets for Vessery. All pilots are PS8 so Vessery fires first and hopefully lowers the target's agility so his wingmates can land more hits. I have added Prockets to the Inquisitor for "close encounters".

Great assessment man!!! I wish more people would do this. As simple as it sounds, I never considered TC on Wampa, but it makes complete sense! LOL!

Vessery is a good synergy and the VI deff makes use of the TB all being PS 8. This is a build I will be using but also wanted to try out Ryad as being the harder to hit option.

Yea the TC on Wampa I really want to give a go - I just suck when it comes to flying tie swarms though. If Palp was in the squad the TC would poss not be needed if you are happy to Palp the crit.

I like the choice of Wampa and the Academy here. The Academy is a great blocker, and Wampa draws a lot of hate due to the paranoia of his ability triggering against low health ships. Which should leave your two aces free to cause plenty of damage and potentially have a better chance to make it to the endgame where they're really tough to take down.

I am definitely tempted by this just to try it out if nothing else, against large low agility ships the 2 ties can still wittle down shields and hull. This pair could still be used with a Vessery instead of Ryad as well since Wampa will be using TL's.

Fair enough. If you are looking to build a squad around being tricky to hit but also resilient, maybe build on that idea using different wingmen who pair better with Ryad. To be fair, Vessery himself pairs well with PTL Ryad since she will often have a spare action to acquire a TL for him.

But if it is Ryad you are looking at, /x7 Defenders excel at durability. They have great action economy but back it up with 6 health and 3 agility. Maybe look at some other hard-to-hit ships to deny your opponent any easy choices. VI Whisper is a great option. While the FAQ has toned her down slightly from her glory days, she is still a great pilot and slippery as anything. The crew slot also provides many great options. Agent Kallus will help you to burn down a priority target while Rebel Captive will make your opponent hesitate before taking pot-shots at Whisper. Continuing with the durability theme, the old Lambda shuttle has a pile of health for very few points. Chuck on Darth Vader crew and you have something that can push through damage, even on Aces.

36 Ryad (34), PTL (3), /x7 (-2), Mk2 Engine (1)

40 Whisper (32), VI (1), Advanced Cloaking Device (4), Rebel Captive (3)

24 Omicron Group Pilot (21), Darth Vader (3)

I been looking through a number of ships and would like thoughts on these:

Heh, Engine Ryad has been a conundrum I've been trying to solve too.

Her strengths: awesome against torpedo scouts and 1v1 fights. She can do well against anything with lower Pilot Skill, but if there are too many opposing ships, she can get overwhelmed and all of her movement shenanigans mean jack if that happens.

Weaknesses: Dash. She really doesn't stand a chance against Dash.

So basically, to get the most out of her strengths, we need ships that can do lots of damage early on and help even the odds to put her in her 'ideal' combat scenario. We also need something that can 'win' the Dash fight (unless you want to gamble on never facing Dash---its a valid choice, but not one I personally would make).

Inquisitor fortunately is pretty good against Dash provided you don't get blocked up (so you want to play cautiously with Inqy vs Dash and save him for the endgame). Unfortunately, Inquisitor's damage output is only just 'okay'. Together, I'd say Ryad and Inquisitor are pretty decent except against swarms. The list is still lacking enough early game firepower to give you an edge against swarms (particularly crack shot swarms that can burst damage through and remove one of your ships fast).

So, I have found this big fella is kind of the perfect answer:

Gamma Veteran -- 27 points

-crack shot

-homing missile

-extra munitions

-long-range scanners

The odds that he one-shots a TIE fighter on the initial turn of shooting are extremely high. And then between Ryad and Inquisitor's shot, you actually have a decent chance of destroying another TIE fighter on that first round of shooting. So voila! A list that can hold its own against pretty much any of the top meta builds out there...

Including 39 pt Ryad and 31 pt Inquisitor, the list is sitting at 97. What you do with the last 3 points is entirely up to you. I've been going with proton rockets on Inquisitor, but so far in the 2 games I've tried, I didn't get to use them at all, so it might not be the best choice. The only other option really is a dial reveal bomb on the bomber, but honestly, that ship is already expensive enough and such an upgrade will be situational too.

The gamma vet is a good choice, you have presented a well reasoned argument, the ability to throw a heavy 4 dice hit with a TL focus and crack stands a good chance of hurting a ship. The extra PS over the bomber choice of mine would certainly help with swarms and jump masters.

The 3 points left over have a number of choices - a bomb or an initiative bid would be good.

Thanks for the response.

I don't see my favorite 30 point Imperial ship in your list of options. He also works great if you decide to run Vessery + Inquisitor as he'll be taking plenty of target locks to help out Vessery as well
