Where's Senator Jar Jar Binks?

By R5D8, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Don't laugh, and I thank you for braving that topic title and reading.

I have an idea for an NPC. Senator Jar Jar Binks, I think it works like any other title where you never really lose it. Anyway, I wanted to know where he was, officially and canonically.

My idea is to make him a changed gungan. The PCs will encounter Senator Binks as a participant in the Rebel Alliance. Missing his left arm at the elbow and currently getting fitted for a new one, scars along his body where the Empire once caught and tortured him, and a seething desire to bring down the fall of Palpatine ... since he blames himself for being manipulated into handing the galaxy to the Emperor. It will be this obsession which drives Senator Binks to risk more than he should, even though he realizes his own clumsiness hasn't gotten any better with old age, so he primarily sticks to the background and uses his bank accounts to fund Rebellion Operations.

A broken gungan, driven to correct a nightmarish mistake he believes himself responsible for.

Dude.

We just got this board cleaned up.

And then you had to Jar Jar Binks all over it?!?

WTF were you thinking?!?

Meesa thinks you be the Real Sith behind all the Sith.

;) ;) ;)

Could definitely be an interesting idea.

Officially and canonically, the last appearance of Jar Jar was at Padme's funeral at the end of Revenge of the Sith. He didn't appear in any of the novels or comics set after that time, before or after the Great Disney Purge. While there were hints that he might appear in The Force Awakens, or his death might be referenced there, it didn't come to pass.

Looks like you're free and clear.

This guy from my Gungan PBP campaign probably knows, but he is MIA at the moment too:

The answer would actually interest me though for purposes of that game. Right now Canonically I have no idea though.

I think he went to where David Cameron is going after his crowning achievement.

Awww... that makes me sad. Jar Jar is a happy-go-lucky character, and you want to turn him into a bitter, broken shell of that, full of hate and self-loathing.

Personally, I think he would have either become a hermit somewhere, perhaps Bardotta, reflecting on how things happened and how he sadly played a part in all of it, seeking zen. Or, he joins the Rebel Alliance in an attempt to make amends for his part, but he's still the likable, clumsy clown.

Or take other approach. Go alternative and embrace Darth Jar Jar theory. Personally I love it, good AU stuff. Although, I personally love your broken gungan approach.

Very short summary: Jar Jar was a Sith lord. Whole theory: http://darthjarjar.com/original-theory-by-lumpawarroo/ It's a fun read, if reader has right frame of mind i.e. not too serious.

From the Core Rulebook, regarding Gungans like Jar Jar Binks: "(Gungans) have a lifespan of 65 Galactic standard years."

Please keep this in mind for timeline continuity as you plot Jar Jar. Certainly, cybernetics or the Force could compensate for injuries and time. Also, if you swallow the Darth Darth Binks theory deeper, an ageless, Plagueis-possessed Gungan might 'live forever.'

Snoke is Jar Jar!

He's dead let's leave it there he was the first to be assassinated by the rebellion....

That is all we are done with this crap character that ruined star wars.

One player assumes the role of a murderous, modified B1 Battle Droad and has expressed interest in accidentally murdering Jar Jar. I'm tempted to allow it.

No, he can't be dead. Otherwise, how could you as GM send players to assassinate him, after rebellion finds out where that destroyer of democracy is hiding?

BTW, I don't think Jar Jar ruined Star Wars. He is one of the most hated characters by fans in star wars universe, but he's still just a character. Don't blame the tool blame it's user. Still, I think it's OK to hate Jar Jar. And when my hate towards Jar Jar reaches certain point, I just watch this:

Gungans are official? What Core rulebook this is? I have only EotE. BTW, biggest reason I like Darth Darth Binks theory, is that it would make Jar Jar bit more tolerable character, because in that case, his purpose would to be the target of all hate. Still, I don't believe Darth Jar Jar theory is truth and that it was Lucas' original plan. Now Jar Jar is just goofy idiot whose existence adds nothing of value to Star Wars. With Darth Darth Binks theory his existence has reason.

It's not a Core Rulebook. It's Nexus of Power from the Force and Destiny line.

Unfortunately gungans are cannon from clone wars and episode 1. However they are now stat'ed in nexus of power if ffg makes them a playable race I will look at them disappointedly shaking my head.

They're not just "stat'ed", they are a playable race in Nexus of Power. One of the 4 new player species offered in that book.

They have high Presence but low Intellect, get a free rank in Athletics, and can breathe underwater. (All of that based on Jar Jar I assume... Jar Jar was an idiot but everyone seemed to like him for some reason anyway, he did that wacky flip into the water, and he could swim with the Jedi without a rebreather.)

Both Boss Nass and Roos Tarpals show evidence of high Presence (one is Brian Blessed is a politician and the other is a military leader). Athletics covers swimming, and they do live underwater. Their low Intellect can be reasoned that they are mostly a traditional, isolationist culture with their own way of doing things, especially before Naboo and after the rise of the humanocentric Empire (a decade and a half isn't enough to overturn centuries of tradition), and aren't familiar enough with the 'standard' way of doing things -- primitive by the galactic definition, even though they can build underwater cities, submarines, plasma weaponry, and advanced shield technology.

Ugh well time to find out who made that decision cause I put that up with the decision to make 2 different kinds of human.

All the Jar Jar hate in this thread made me sad.

All the Jar Jar hate in this thread made me sad.

I don't hate Jar Jar. I dislike how he was portrayed in movies. He was IMO essentially unnecessary character who didn't particularly affect the whole story (except in few rare occasions, e.g. Palpatines rise to power, but whole characters arch was too much preparation for that one occasion). Also, I don't have much dislike for gungans (or corelian born humans) as species. They are a species as are Bothans, Twi'leks, Toydarians, Hutts or Wookiees. I like variety.

I think Jar Jar was George's attempt to get Chris Tucker from the Fifth Element into the Star Wars franchise.

If you don't get the reference, go watch the Fifth Element right now. I'll wait here.

...

That was a really good movie, wasn't it?

Unfortunately, he also had developed a serious CGI fetish at the time that the industry as a whole has by now overcome. In hindsight, Jar Jar as a character could have been really cool. Give poor Ahmed Best a way to use his real face and make a connection with the other actors with his real eyes, and get your head out of the clouds for long enough to anticipate potential issues, and this could have been a hit. (Did seriously nobody think that the accents in Episode I could be perceived as offensive?)

That being said, I really enjoyed the Clone Wars episode where Jar Jar and Mace Windu team up. It is a joy to watch.

(Did seriously nobody think that the accents in Episode I could be perceived as offensive?

It never occurred to me that they could be perceived that way (I just thought they were annoying) until I watched the movie with a Rifftrax commentary that mocked it. (Rifftrax is the old Mystery Science Theater 3000 cast doing audio commentary for new movies, it's pretty funny.) Now I can't hear Jar Jar, Watto, or the Neimoidians without cringing a little. It's like Lucas thought that attributing real-life racial stereotypes to fictional alien species would insulate people from offense. If anything it's worse, showing how "alien" those ethnicities are.

It's very puzzling to me. Especially since they replaced the offensive "vaguely Chinese" accent of the baddie with a "vaguely French" accent in the German dub. France and Germany have a... history. This is WAY beyond coincidental.

In many ways, the Trade Federation looks like it represents an American fear of the economic might of the Chinese people, and they unabashedly tried to "translate" that specific American xenophobia into the sort of xenophobia that resonates better with Germans?

As a fan of Tolkien and Lovecraft, I am sort of used to letting my mind wander in mildly to moderately racist fantasy realms, but it makes me so sad every time dehumanizing/fearmongering ("the fish-folk mingle with our women and poison our gene pool!" "the brutish fell orcs are coming to pillage!" "these slit-eyed aliens overpower us with their economy!" "we need to build a Wall to keep these rapists and their drugs out!") makes a comeback in the 21st century.

And oddly enough, there is only one kind of Gungan in FFG's Star Wars. Boss Nass must've just been an obese anomaly.

The Gungans in the book are obviously Otolla Gungans, one of the two major races of the species. Boss Nass was an Ankura Gungan. They might have rules for the Ankura eventually, or perhaps not since they've been so rarely seen in the films, TV shows, and other media, and according to Legends made up a very small percentage of Gungans.
