Large Ships Only Month

By Obfuscation, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Local store is doing "Large Ships Only" in July. It is unclear if the Ghost's Attack Shuttle is playable. My guess is no.

Currently, I only have the three Rebel large ships so he's what I'm considering messing around with. Thoughts? FYI, I'm a noob.

Han Solo

YT-1300, Unique - 46
When attacking, you may reroll all of your dice. If you choose to do so, you must reroll as many of your dice as possible.
Luke Skywalker (7)
Weapons Engineer (3)
Kanan Jarruss
VCX-100, Unique - 38
When an enemy ship at Range 1-2 is attacking, you may spend a focus token. If you do, the attacker rolls 1 less attack die.
Reinforced Deflectors (3)
Dorsal Turret (3)

Han is a good ship - essentially giving you a free not-quite-target-lock, and Luke giving you a second shot with a free not-quite-focus. This gives you a nice, high pilot skill, shooty ship which doesn't need it's action to be effective.

The Weapons Engineer is a bit of a sore thumb, though - yes, he gives you two target locks, but so what? You can't hand them to anyone else and frankly don't really need them.

Engine Upgrade is a nice one - making the Falcon a hell of a lot faster and more manoeuvrable. With large ships only, though, you're likely to face a lot of turrets so that may not be as useful as it normally is. The Falcon title, giving you the ability to evade, on the other hand, is essentially a free shield every turn, and leaves you two points for something else. If you drop Luke to a 'normal' gunner, you could afford Chewbacca, who's a very good card for toughening up a big ship, or C-3PO if you have access to one.

Kanan is cool - you may not find reinforced deflectors triggering that often, though - if Kanan drops a 3-dice attack to a 2-dice, it'll never trigger, and if he drops a 4-dice to a 3-dice, it's still pretty unlikely. Still, it's good protection from torpedo-bomber Jumpmasters. The Dorsal Turret, on the other hand, isn't so amazing. At range 2 it's pretty ineffectual, and at range 1 you might as well have an autoblaster turret. Personally, I'd consider swapping it for a recon specialist (even if you don't have a HWK, there were recon specialist prize cards in a recent game night kit so you shouldn't have trouble finding a loaner). Getting a 'spare' focus token when you focus means you can use Kanan's ability twice (and you're unlikely to face more than 3 ships if it's large ship only) or you can use it defensively and still modify the Ghost's big primary attack...

I would dump Luke
switch to Chewie to save points and get some durability

Chewie : PtL Kyle Katarn, EU, Mil Falcon

Kanan: FCS, autoblaster, Recon Specialist, and 2 pts to change to sensor jammer if you want or some torpedoes for out the back

If everyone else is running large ships as well, its just going to be a slugfest as to who can get off the best shots the quickest. You actually want your VCX shooting with the primary weapon most often (think what he will do vs. YT1300)

if you're going to run deflectors, put it on a lothal reb who's taking those 3 hit shots without agility.

Han Solo with EU is a good choice for Large-ship-only games. At PS9, he will be moving after all other ships unless they use their valuable EPT slot on Veteran Instincts. While most large ships have turrets or secondary firing arcs, Boosting will still be useful against things like U-boats where you don't want your low-agility Falcon sitting in range/arc of torpedoes.

This is really good stuff. Thanks for such a thorough reply.

Playing around with a list builder now.

4 lambdas, equip all with manglers cannon. This is 40 hit points your opponent has to chew through, and 12 attack dice to defend against. 16 if range 1 with primaries. Large ship lists usually consist of only 2 ships, so you'll stampede your opponents 2:1 with this lambda swarm! Not to mention, large ships typically have low defence dice and high hull points. The crits from your manglers will make quick work of them. Just make sure to fly them staggered, that's the trick. If they get past one, they still have to face the other 3. By time they get past all 4, the first one should have been able to turn around and charge in again. I used this list against 3 imperial aces, he shot one dead, pushed another off the board with a decloak, but in the end I won lol

4 Lambdas is nice. 've been considering that as a list for 'normal' games just for the glee of it. I think Electronic Baffle is the key, though, so no space for mangler cannons.

  • Omicron Group Pilot, Electronic Baffle, Darth Vader
  • Omicron Group Pilot, Electronic Baffle, Tractor Beam, Anti-Pursuit Lasers
  • Omicron Group Pilot, Electronic Baffle, Tractor Beam, Tactician
  • Omicron Group Pilot, Electronic Baffle, Mara Jade

You might want to swap the tractor beams for a flechette cannon as tractor tokens are less useful against big ships.

Who has 4 Lambdas?? That's not an army... That's a taxi fleet

I would go with the double Decimators. I don't have 2, but i love the ship, and sounds lots of fun...

Between myself and immediate friends, more than easily done.

Do not speak lightly of the Great White Space Whale, for it is actually surprisingly dangerous if it gets angry....

Not a big fan of the Lambda due to my lack of skill.

But a lot of respect for the Palpmobile. :)

Truly, anything which can control the Emerald Octahedrons Of Inevitable Betrayal is worthy of respect.

But the shuttle can catch people off-guard, especially now the baffle allows you to pull some seriously janky manoeuvres for an 'unwieldy' ship. Bank '3' or Turn '2' and boost on an engine upgrade boat costs you a shield but the resulting speed leaves even TIE interceptors and A-wings going "where the bloody hell did HE come from?"
