Hi, all,
New to the forums.... first time poster. (Dodges tomato!)
Well, I used to be into gaming, and I might actually get into it again, if I can tear myself away from my other hobby, and that is dabbling in CG animation and CG model building. Armada looks really interesting. I've never played X-wing. Heck, never even played the Starfighter Battles game when West End Games had the Star Wars gaming license. (I did heavily play WEG's SW RPG back in the day though.)
Anyhoo.... as I said, I haven't really gotten back into gaming. (I'm a pro-singer on Bourbon St. in New Orleans, LA.) And when I'm not busy being a Bourbon St. Rockstar, I am a full on, bona fide geek. (Dodges another tomato!) Hey, I was referring to myself, and not any indigenes.... a'ight?! A'ight!
As I stated, my big hobby right now is doing CG animation and CG model building. Before that, it was just doing VFX quickies...using practical miniatures.
I have actually collected quite a few miniatures over the years, ranging from the 12 inch light and sound Imperial Star Destroyer and Corellian Corvette, to Micro Machines (including the Titanium series), to miniatures from past Star Wars space miniature games...
...and now, the fine miniatures from Fantasy Flight.
I have the X-wing version of the CR90 Corellian Corvette (my favorite ship in all of the Star Wars universe), the Millennium Falcon, the Lambda class T4a shuttle. (probably my third favorite ship in all of Star Wars). The detail on these ships is simply astonishing! I mean, they actually look good enough to be filming miniatures, in my very humble opinion.
A couple of days ago, I went to Barnes and Noble because I wanted to get the core rules to Armada, because it had the Victory class Star Destroyer. But, then, as I look up, I see the expansion for the Imperial class, and a standalone for the Victory class. So, wide eyed as I was, I snagged those up, foregoing the Armada core rules set. (Besides, I already had the large version of the Corellian Corvette.)
As with the Xwing miniatures, I love the detail (both the paint, and the greebling and nurnies) on these ships. I've especially always wanted to have a practical model of a Victory class Star Destroyer, and now it is MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE! (gasp! wheeze! cough!)
"So, Martok, why are you simply collecting these miniatures?! Why aren't you gaming with them?! You had the chance to get the core rules for both Xwing and Armada! Why get just the expansions?! Huh?! Huh?!"
Well, as I stated earlier, my hobby is VFX and CG modeling and animation. I buy highly detailed miniatures whenever I can because they make the ultimate references for when I do my own CG modeling. And I do them by sight and by mouse and kb in Blender, using photos I've taken of the miniatures so I can make the best possible builds I can with my very amateurish skills. Having recently bought the Imperial class Star Destroyer expansion for Armada, I think I'll have to do another rebuild and retexture of my CG Star Destroyer, which, in my humble opinion already looks pretty good considering it was based and textured off of the old 12 inch light and sound Star Destroyer I have. The detailing on the much smaller Fantasy Flight Star Wars Armada Imperial Star Destroyer totally outstrips the 12 inch miniature I have.
Here's an example of what I do. All assets in this video are built, animated, textured, and rendered by yours truly, Martok2112. The Lambda class shuttle and the Corellian Corvette are referenced, built, and textured based on the Fantasy Flight Lambda shuttle and Corvette, the Sentinel class dropships are modeled and textured based off of the Titanium series Micro Machines ships. The Imperial Star Destroyer is referenced, modeled and textured from the Kenner 12 inch light and sound miniature. Each model took anywhere from 8 hours to five days to build, depending on complexity.
I hope you enjoy.
Respectfully,
Martok2112
