Not so much a gamer as a collector and amateur CG film maker...

By martok2112, in Star Wars: Armada Off-Topic

Hi, all,

New to the forums.... first time poster. (Dodges tomato!)

Well, I used to be into gaming, and I might actually get into it again, if I can tear myself away from my other hobby, and that is dabbling in CG animation and CG model building. Armada looks really interesting. I've never played X-wing. Heck, never even played the Starfighter Battles game when West End Games had the Star Wars gaming license. (I did heavily play WEG's SW RPG back in the day though.)

Anyhoo.... as I said, I haven't really gotten back into gaming. (I'm a pro-singer on Bourbon St. in New Orleans, LA.) And when I'm not busy being a Bourbon St. Rockstar, I am a full on, bona fide geek. (Dodges another tomato!) Hey, I was referring to myself, and not any indigenes.... a'ight?! A'ight!

As I stated, my big hobby right now is doing CG animation and CG model building. Before that, it was just doing VFX quickies...using practical miniatures.

I have actually collected quite a few miniatures over the years, ranging from the 12 inch light and sound Imperial Star Destroyer and Corellian Corvette, to Micro Machines (including the Titanium series), to miniatures from past Star Wars space miniature games...

...and now, the fine miniatures from Fantasy Flight.

I have the X-wing version of the CR90 Corellian Corvette (my favorite ship in all of the Star Wars universe), the Millennium Falcon, the Lambda class T4a shuttle. (probably my third favorite ship in all of Star Wars). The detail on these ships is simply astonishing! I mean, they actually look good enough to be filming miniatures, in my very humble opinion.

A couple of days ago, I went to Barnes and Noble because I wanted to get the core rules to Armada, because it had the Victory class Star Destroyer. But, then, as I look up, I see the expansion for the Imperial class, and a standalone for the Victory class. So, wide eyed as I was, I snagged those up, foregoing the Armada core rules set. (Besides, I already had the large version of the Corellian Corvette.)

As with the Xwing miniatures, I love the detail (both the paint, and the greebling and nurnies) on these ships. I've especially always wanted to have a practical model of a Victory class Star Destroyer, and now it is MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE! (gasp! wheeze! cough!)

"So, Martok, why are you simply collecting these miniatures?! Why aren't you gaming with them?! You had the chance to get the core rules for both Xwing and Armada! Why get just the expansions?! Huh?! Huh?!"

Well, as I stated earlier, my hobby is VFX and CG modeling and animation. I buy highly detailed miniatures whenever I can because they make the ultimate references for when I do my own CG modeling. And I do them by sight and by mouse and kb in Blender, using photos I've taken of the miniatures so I can make the best possible builds I can with my very amateurish skills. Having recently bought the Imperial class Star Destroyer expansion for Armada, I think I'll have to do another rebuild and retexture of my CG Star Destroyer, which, in my humble opinion already looks pretty good considering it was based and textured off of the old 12 inch light and sound Star Destroyer I have. The detailing on the much smaller Fantasy Flight Star Wars Armada Imperial Star Destroyer totally outstrips the 12 inch miniature I have.

Here's an example of what I do. All assets in this video are built, animated, textured, and rendered by yours truly, Martok2112. The Lambda class shuttle and the Corellian Corvette are referenced, built, and textured based on the Fantasy Flight Lambda shuttle and Corvette, the Sentinel class dropships are modeled and textured based off of the Titanium series Micro Machines ships. The Imperial Star Destroyer is referenced, modeled and textured from the Kenner 12 inch light and sound miniature. Each model took anywhere from 8 hours to five days to build, depending on complexity.

I hope you enjoy.

Respectfully,
Martok2112

Looks pretty cool, man!

Thanks, Caldias. :)

The fun part's going to be making the character scenes, and then adding the audio from the radio play.

Like I said, they'll only be excerpts. Heh....to try and do the whole 13 episode run would be....yikes!

Also, thanks to everyone who liked the post. :) I hope you enjoyed the video. :)

As is almost always the case in CG model building.... half of building is re-building.

I'm doing alterations to my Corellian Corvette now that allow it to have retractable landing gear and the boarding elevator, as seen in The Clone Wars. I may also do a variant that was seen where the ship had extra cannons above the port and starboard boarding hatches.

I've also finished my rebuild of the Imperial Star Destroyer, based on the Armada miniature. My next projects will be the Victory class star destroyer and the Millennium Falcon. But for now, I have to remain focused on my video project.

The only reason I am doing rebuilds of certain models now is because if my first effort goes over popular enough, there will be other excerpts from the Star Wars Radio play that I might do. (I already have one other excerpt in mind.)

I hope you will enjoy my humble efforts. :)

I dig it! Creative way to use the models for a non-gaming purpose, and I agree that the level of detail and out of box paint is pretty great from FFG.

You should head over to the painting and modification sub and see the custom designs some people have done on their ships too. It might give you some inspiration to make some custom variants in your CG work.

Hi, BrobaFett,

Yeah, I went over to the painting section, and WOW! There are some really talented painters here on the boards. And yes, those could serve as inspiration for retexturing, or creating CG variants of some of my builds.

I went yesterday and bought the Gladiator class star destroyer miniature. Another future project build of mine. :) I tried to see if Barnes and Noble had a Vindicator, but alas, no. I do have a Vindicator from a previous Star Wars miniatures game (not X Wing), but those miniatures were made from a lesser quality material. So, if anything, I can at least build the miniature, and then wait til I get the Armada/X Wing version to do the textures.

I hope you enjoyed the video.

More pics will be on the way soon of my model builds. :)

Er....I think I meant Interdictor. Heh.... I don't know where I got Vindicator from. :D

And I just realized that the Interdictor is not out yet. :D (embarrassed grin)

Just wanted to post a few pics of my models that will be used in my upcoming tribute film. These are done at what I term as "actor scale". In other words, these are sized up in scale to the characters I'll be using in my video. (Yeah, the star destroyer is 1600 virtual meters long.)

The Corellian Corvette, the Lambda class shuttle and the Sentinel class drop ship all have animations that can be executed on command. (Wings, landing gear, boarding ramps, airlocks, boarding elevator). The Corvette, the star destroyer, and the Lambda class shuttle are all texture sourced from Fantasy Flights' Star Wars X-Wing and Armada board games miniatures. The Sentinel class drop ship is texture sourced from the Titanium Micro Machine series of miniatures.

I hope you enjoy these humble virtual offerings.

Fantasy Flight, all I can say is, keep up the awesome work you do on your miniatures. They definitely inspire my CG builds. :)

More really cool renderings. Neat to see the FFG touches brought to life in a graphic interpretation. I look forward to seeing any movies or whatnot you put out!

Most kind, thank you. :)

I am currently working on the characters now so I can do the character scenes for my project.

It won't be Clone Wars or Rebels quality when I get done with it, but I hope it will be enjoyable when I do put it out there. :)
