Handling Mod

By kelpie, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hi all

there is an attachment/mod for starship to increase handling?

googling it a bit i found there is something inside Mask of the Pirate Queen; however i'm not in the mood to buy an adventure only for a single mod... so...

a) there is somewhere else a mod to increase handling

b) what else i can found in Mask of the Pirate Queen, apart from adventure itself?

The Rigger from Stay on Target has a talent that increases the handling for their Signature Vehicle.

It seems like the lack of modifications is pretty indicative. This looks like a clear design choice.

Or it's something in a book that's not come out yet.

Also very likely. You would think something like that would be important enough to include in the Ace or Smuggler book, if not the CRBs. But FFG tends to juke left when I expect them to go right.

The Starfighter Ace is part of the Warrior career, would make sense that handling could be modified in its future book release. However, I expect much (if anything) will address handling as a Force influence, rather than purely mechanical modifications. A sourcebook for starships would be nice, too.

That one isn’t even listed in the MotPQ book, it’s just a footnote on a particular ship that has the attachment in question.

The developer who created that particular ship said that he wanted a way to give the ship better handling, but didn’t just want to arbitrarily increase the number. So, he came up with this excuse for a mod that adds the feature in question. But that’s as far as that mod goes. Outside of that one ship, it doesn’t appear to officially exist anywhere.

So, as GM, feel free to make up your own. Or look at the Rigger specialization.

Jewel of Yavin has Maneuvering Thrusters on page 47 which increases handling by 1 for vehicles of Silhouette 2 and lower. It is 500 per Silhouette of vehicle and does not have any detrimental effects.

You could house rule that it could be attached to larger vehicles up to Silhouette 5 but at a cost of lowering Strain Threshold by 1 or 2.

So depending on the vehicle there are different ways to improve handling:

1. Reduce Setback added to a pool by bad handling

If your ship has negative handling then the easiest way to improve that situation is the Skilled Jockey talent, there are 6 ranks of these available between Starfighter (2), Pilot (2), Hotshot (1), Driver (2), Fringer (1).

Your second option here is the Riggers "Tuned Maneuvering Thristers" talent

2. Increase Boost added to a pool by good handling

The only option, but a great option, right now is the Riggers "Tuned Maneuvering Thrusters"

So what about future speculation? As for building better ships from the ground up we have construction rules for almost everything a PC can buy... except Vehicles. The common belief is that Engineers in the Rebellion are the logical characters for vehicles construction. If we get rules for construction of vehicles you can bet one of the ways to spend Ad/Tr/Th/De is increasing or decreasing the Handling of the vehicle. Mods for vehicles will probably come with those rules too and I'm sure there will be something that affects handling.

The Engineers book would be a great place for a Specialisation that focuses on a Signature Vehicle too, possibly with the ability to have multiple signature vehicles to capture the feel of a "Squadron Tech" character. Could see the addition of another rank of TMT.

As for attachments I would think that Boba Fet is an iconic character who liked to modify his ship, could be a good place for a Maneuvering attachment. A Pilot type career in the Bounty Hunter book that has the Signature Vehicle talent makes sense too, with some of the ranked talents from Rigger and Modder (there are 4 ranked talents in Rigger and 1 in Modder that all only exist once at the moment... Seems we could expect to see at least 1 more of each of those in the future)

TheRe is one other slightly different way to make your ship fly better and that's being force sensitive and having the Enhance Force Power.

Sounds like something a Shipwright in an Engineer career book might be able to do, or an item in that book.

My guess is when the vehicle crafting rules come out there will be ways of increasing handling. Also custom mods can be built and used even if they are not in any book. I think handling and strain or armor seem linked.

Mmmmhhh... ok

so there is no official "handling mod", ie an attachment specifically designed to improve handling.

I should create one on my own

ty for answer!!
