An unexpected newbie

By Ludlov Thadwin of Sevenpiecks, in Dark Heresy

Hi everyone,

this is the first time I've posted anything on the Dark Heresy boards. I've always been primarily a Warhammer Fantasy fan and although I love 40K's dark, gothic universe, I never got into gaming in it very much (although I did read a few novels about it).

Anyway, the other day I was walking around in my local comic book store and found a copy of this gorgeous Dark Heresy book. I turned it in my hand, looked at the backside and saw its price listed as 5 euros! I asked the shop owner if this was correct (as the book normally costs 50 euros around here) and he said it was because the book was damaged. Indeed, between the cover and the first page, that wonderful map of the Calixis sector was somewhat torn. Nevertheless, the rest of the book was still in great condition so I did not hesitate and bought it.

I haven't read much of it yet but since I've played Warhammer Fantasy, the rules seem pretty familiar and when I look at the illustrations... my God... This is the most atmospheric roleplay book I've ever seen! So I'm quite intrigued.

So I want to say hi to the community of DH fans and tell you that I'm new and interested in trying the game, perhaps in play-by-post format if anyone is willing to put up with a total newcomer:)

Welcome! I was also a skeptical convert to DH after years playing WFRP.

But I'm glad I tried it, and haven't looked back since my conversion. I am confident you will come to love it even more than you did the old world :)

Hope you have a good time here. I know I have been, even if I haven't been posting a lot. The people here are quite friendly, and most questions are answered with good, solid opinions behind them.

Hope you enjoy your stay, and watch out for the assassin around the corner.

Hi Ludlov.

I'm fairly new to DH as well. I just completed my first DH campaign as a player, and am preparing to run my first DH campaign with my local gaming group.

I don't know if he is still recruiting, but I am currently playing one play-by-post game run by "airbornexo", can't find the thread right off, but the name of his campaign is Malleus Calixis. He's got a topic here on the DH main boards somewhere, with contact info and such.

Hope that helps. And ... welcome to the grim dark future. gran_risa.gif

Hi Ludlov! Sorry I cannot help with the play by email game. I think the guys over at FantasyGrounds have a a ruleset in their forums if that is your thing...

Anyway I can help with one part of your "problem". You can download another copy of your torn map here. There €45 saved!

Good to have you with us! If you are after any fan-made stuff, make sure to check out the House Rules section, and try out Dark Reign (shameless plug, the link is in my sig lengua.gif)

Thank you guys,

from the many nice replies I've had here I can tell this is an awesome community. Before I start out playing, I'll have to thoroughly read the book and come up with a character, of course... I'm terribly attracted to the Tech-priests. I love their Dune-like mysterious aura, but on the other hand, as a player it may be more interesting to play an "ordinary" character in an extraordinary and mysterious world than trying to portray the mystery yourself.

I'll wait a bit before applying to a play-by-post game but thank you, Sister Cat, for the invitation anyway. Also, I've never actually played a PBP game. I've seen the fantasy ground website and it looks very cool but isn't it subscription-based or something?

Thank you, Baldrick, for the map, by the way! And thank you, Millandson, for the info!

No worries, man. This is my first foray into play-by-post myself. And ... I must admit it is a very different experience. Until now, I have been strictly a PnP gamer. Well, with one foray into LARP that was, um ... disturbing. gui%C3%B1o.gif

If you do decide to try it out, PBP is very, very slow compared to PnP games. In the one I'm playing, my fellow players, as well as the GM, post about once every other day, on average. For someone used to PnP, it seems interminably slow at first. But, I am starting to get a feel for the flow. But, for busy working people or students, it actually seems to work well ... especially since many of us are spread out across the world, in many different time-zones.

But hey, it beats the social-networking sites ... at least in my book. Guess I'm somewhat "old-school". gran_risa.gif

Anyway, have fun with the setting. I have fallen in love with it. And based on the traffic on these boards, so have a lot of others.

Which LARP?

Which LARP?

Vampire the Masquerade. You can imagine the mental-trauma I suffered. gran_risa.gif Blasted Goths!

We didn't find out until well after the campaign ended that our Storyteller was a raving lunatic. sorpresa.gif

Don't get me wrong, it started out looking like it had the potential to be very much fun ... but our Storyteller was also playing the NPC Prince of the City. And ... it became evident, very quickly, that he was unhinged. gran_risa.gif

And then, after the game had ended (due to the host having sold his house), we found out that our Storyteller was confined to a mental facility. Go figure ... gui%C3%B1o.gif

That'd put me off LARP for a while too, but luckily I grew up with some cool guys, and the guys I FINALLY gamed with (didn't have a chance till High school) were cool about it.

Don't blame Goths for ruining the LARP, I've LARPed once or twice, and had a fair few goths there, and they were some of the best players there. You honestly shouldn't let one bad game put you off it. If you get a good group, it can be brilliant fun.

I was just funnin' about the goths, Millandson. gui%C3%B1o.gif And I'm sure you're right about having a good group. Problem for me is, that is pretty much impossible where I live. I know most, if not all, of the local gamers, and ... the few that I would consider LARPing with don't want any part of it. So, there ya go.

I've never LARPed but I don't think I would like it. I like to imagine creatures. Orcs. Beastmen. Necrons. Lords of Change. I can't imagine that working in LARP form :)

I'm having my doubts about play-by-post as well now... Perhaps I should just wait until I've got the time to get into a real Dark Heresy campaign with my buddies. Right now we're already playing two other RPGs (switching on a week-to-week basis).

Looking forward to it, though, and immensely enjoying reading the core rulebook! The career system looks much more restrictive than Warhammer Fantasy's but I have the feeling this fits the setting. Besides, my players tend to go for the straightest career road most of the time.

I am an unexpected newbie too. I won a copy of the core book from Obsidian Portal over Christmas. I am waiting for it in the mail. During this whole time I have been talking about it with friends and looking at their copies and I am hooked before its even arrived. I have a feeling in January I am going to be buying many more books. Oww my poor wallet.

The setting will suck you in, there is no doubt about that. The only problem I had was the combat system didn't really support the gloomy, horroresque feel the setting touts. Otherwise, though, it is well worth the time and money ... though at what companies are forced to charge these days in order to make a profit it becomes critical that you cherry pick which suppliments you add to your table. Thankfully you can usually get some good advise on that matter from the people here.

Got my copy of Dark Heresy in the mail. Yeah I am hooked. Already have Rogue Trader on the way in the mail, and trying to convince myself not to spend more dollars on DH source books .....yet....... gran_risa.gif

The DH sourcebooks are actually as good as if not better than the core book. The Inquisitors hand book and radicals handbook are a players wet dream. So many choices so so so many choices.
