Cutter's Way

By kelpie, in Game Masters

Hi everyone

as i previously noted here i'm about to convert old 20-year long WEG campaign into new one

one of mine concern is about their iconic space ship

they used the Cutter's Way , an heavily modified GX Short Hauler they bought from Fizzy's Slightly Used Starship (inside Adventure Journal #6) with powerful engine and a "surgery flux", a special device connected to weapons and engines, capable of reducing power from 2 of them to buffer one of the other

In the years, this ship got heavily modified, using rules from previous WEG supplement (some from GG6 and other from other books, plus some one house ruled). This was possible 'cause of one of them who was an expert spaceship designer and he completely rebuilt some part of the ship.

Now, in EotE rules for ship modification are way simpler and schematic; and much different.

As for Surgery Flux, i already posted my idea long time ago, here (sorry for necro-posting) and it looks like a not terrible mod

As for other attachment, i see GX short hauler stats, and i see some problems

1) stats for old WEG's Lantillian Short Hauler are way better than new ones

2) they addedd a lot of attachment

3) in EotE you can increase speed only once

so i was thinking: how can give them their iconic special ship, with everything they used to have, without breaking the rules?

a) searching for an explanation:

- they can add surgery flux to engine to give more power

- their engineer (a former player who does'nt play anymore) is an outlaw tech and that's his iconic ship so he used Jury Rigged/Tinkerer on that one to increase hard points

- one of them is forced to buy some specialization who can give more ship hard point

- i invent a new attachment: it reduce cargo space adding more hard point

- something else (what else?)

b) nerf their ship. I know (and they know too) something will be different; however what i don't whant is to go from a super ship to a total crap. A little nerf is ok, complete nerfing is a no no...

(i can justify some change by damaging the ship and "the damage is critical; you can repair it, but the ship would be no more as it was..." but still: ok to lose 1 point of speed, not to go from super ship to total crap...)

c) their former mate (now an NPC) is a genius. He did'nt modify the ship: he completely built a new one using old ship chassis. So i create a new ship class named "Cutter's Way", with 0 hard point and everything they whant on board. Maybe with some special rules like "will never pass a close imperial inspection", "add [black][black][black] to every repair roll" and "upgrade 4 times difficult to upgrade, change or modify something on the ship if you are not his creator"

what do you think?

Anything in special modifications that can help?

i got no Special Modification :(

I don't think there was anything ship related in Special Mods - mostly gear related and not so much starship related. There was just the one new tree that was Signiture Ship based. If you're looking to build your own, we haven't seen those rules drop yet. Beyond that, Fly Casual is the book you need.

- their engineer (a former player who does'nt play anymore) is an outlaw tech and that's his iconic ship so he used Jury Rigged/Tinkerer on that one to increase hard points

I'm away from book, so don't take this as gospel, but I don't think those talents work with/on ships.

You'd be correct. Those talents are meant for personal equipment, as in things that the PC can actually carry on their person.

If a PC really wants to be able to boost their ship's performance, check out the Rigger spec in Stay on Target, which has talents that directly improve a starship's performance in several regards.

Oh ok, the Rigger

i remembered something about signature vehicle but don't where it was :D

however, i told something and they just started arguing "you can change the base stats" or "you can change the rules" or "stats are unimportant but in the old rules the ship was very powerful" etc -_-

I think the easiest way will be to "create" a new ship,

give it the stats you think that would be fitting the old one (don“t overdoe it!), BUT, make clear there are no more HP.

that way your players will be satisfied...

and in the next Space-battle: "Hello my lovely crit-table" ... or "how to force you players to take on a new ship"... ^^

Just as with characters, there's not really a 1:1 conversion ratio for ships. If, as you describe, the ship was basically built from scratch within an existing frame, it's really not that frame's base. I'd suggest you as the GM custom stat as close an approximation as you want to give them. Write off any differences as damage done to the ship.

Or, go scorched earth...have the ship destroyed/stolen/impounded in-game. Have them procure a new ship and have to kit it out to their liking (and means).
