Stress, mind link and electronic baffle

By dotswarlock, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Imagine a scum squad with 3 ships, all with mindlink, one of which is G-1A with electronic baffle.

"Mindlink : Each time you are assigned a focus or stress token, each other friendly ship with Attanni Mindlink must also be assigned the same type of token if it does not already have one."

"Electronic baffle: When you receive a stress token or an ion token, you may suffer 1 damage to discard that token."

I would just like to confirm the following:

- The G-1A does a k-turn, earning himself a stress

- Both Mindlink and Electronic baffle trigger at the same time ("when recieving a stress" and "assigned a stress")

- I can choose to resolve mindlink first, assigning a stress to my other mindlink ships.

- I can then use electronic baffle to remove the stress from the G-1A and still perform an action.

Does this all add up?

Why not resolve Electronic Baffle first and get rid of the stress before mindlink activates, then you can avoid the "negative" side-effects of mindlink altogether...

Very interesting if this is indeed possible?

I would like that as well (and that was my initial hope), but I think that both abilities trigger at the same time, so having electronic baffle activate first won't stop mindlink from also triggering.

Baffle triggers after receiving the token and allows you to discard it, so Mindlink triggers slightly earlier (when the token is assigned) so you couldn't resolve Baffle first. But there's no reason you couldn't resolve it afterwards, or that the Mindlink ship receiving the stress couldn't Baffle it away.

Also even if they triggered at the same time it wouldn't matter, baffle doesn't make you unreceive the stress, simply allows you to remove it afterwards. Regardless of the order you will still mindlink the stress.

The order mattered, but not for the same reason. The scenario that I did "not" want to happen was:

- Earn a stress

- Use electronic baffle to get rid of it (earning one damage)

- Other mindlinked ships get a stress

- Original ship gets a stress back through mindlink.

I wanted to make sure that I could do mindlink first and then use electronic baffle. Otherwise, that's just a meaningless 1 point of damage (and 1 point wasted on a squad).

You really think there is enough of a difference between "when you receive" and "each time you are assigned" to declare that one effect has to come before the other?

No, I think it's self-evident from the way Baffles is written that the token has to actually have arrived before you can choose to get rid of it, which means that the damage and removal HAVE to come after Mindlink, which triggers when the token arrives.

It's how the cards read to me, but I'll certainly admit it's not 100% clear.

Even if it's not the correct interpretation, at worst they share a timing trigger, which means that the order can be chosen in the way favourable to the player.

The way I read those two is, you receive or assign a token (it's the same thing), then they BOTH trigger. There's definitely not one before the other. They both share the same timing.

Don't think it matters either way, even if you baffle the stress away, you have still received the stress token triggering mindlink, mindlink triggers on receiving the stress not having the stress so even if you baffle the stress, you still have to receive it first triggering mindlink

It does matter.

Mindlink first:

1. Zuckuss with Mindlink and Baffles receives a stress token.

2. Attani Mindlink propagates the stress token to all other friendly ships that do not already have one.

3. Zuckuss uses Baffles to get rid of his stress token and take a damage.

4. As soon as the first friendly ship gets its stress token, Attani Mindlink propagates a stress token to Zuckuss who does not have one.
