How I play - Builds for Heroes and Overlords

By mattflow, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Why should I choose High Mage Quellan? Should I make him a runemaster or a geomancer?

What are the best skills and why?

Wouldn't it be good to have use the powers of this forum for good and niceness instead of constant top 5 or top 10 lists.

Why don't we leverage the collective knowledge of the experts and frequent visitors here to learn some tips and tricks for that Hero and Class combination you've always wanted to try.

I'm inviting everyone here to explain their favorite plays, best choices, n00b builds, list your favourite combos and strategies for play and inventories for must have items or the next best thing.

Let's start with Hero/Class Combinations and then we can move onto Overlords/Monster Combos and Party Build combinations (does it really need to be 1 of each color?)

Let's collectively work out :

Gamebreaking Builds

Builds that make you think

Hilarious Combinations

Strongest parties

Complimentary heroes and parties

Most deliciously evil Overlords - Favourite Deck / Favourite Combo

Monster combos that make players weep and overlords grin

Should the responses be separate topics ?

How I Play - Warrior/Beastmaster

How I Play - Warrior/Berserker

How I Play - Warrior/Champion

How I Play - Warrior/Knight

How I Play - Warrior/Marshal

How I Play - Warrior/Skirmisher

or just spawn from a Master post ?

How I play a Warrior -

Beastmaster

Beserker

Champion

Knight

Marshal

Skirmisher

Character I choose - Name?

Why do I choose them? -

Is it Stats?

Their ability? - Why? what does it do? What's the best use of ability, example, got a pic?

The Heroic Feat? - Best use - is it every round or a last resort?

Is it because they have a Cool looking Mini?

Equipment/Hero Combo? What's the best to use?

Is it because they work well with another Hero?

What class cards do you choose and what do you aim for in the end game?

Any cool combos, start game, mid game and end game?

Anything else?

Nice idea, it may help to get some tips regarding rarely played classes/heroes so that these get some love. Separate topics would work better but the main page would become very crowded, so more subfora maybe?

Something like this may be better suited for a Wiki if you want knowledge to be consolidated in a single source, rather than scattered throughout many topics. I don't think we want to clutter the forum with tons of sticky posts, or threads with massive page counts.

Honestly, I think the best thing is for individuals to write up comprehensive strategy guides on BGG, such as Indalecio's excellent article on Overlord Plot Decks. People can then comment on them on that page if they have their own spin on things or disagree with something. A single sticky post can then be used to have links to all the strategy guides people have written up over the years.

All of these items are highly subjective, so there will never be an authoritative source on such information.

Here are some hero build on the a similar thread I tried to do on reddit.

  • The sustain machine: Elder Mok / Bard

Self-explanatory; you heal allies, you get heal. It's amazing from start to the end of a campaign. The Conversion Kit edition is probably one of the most OP thing that exists in Descent; his revised sheet is still very strong.

  • Battlefield healer: Okaluk and Rakash / Disciple

This one is a bit harder to see, but you have to try it to feel it. The free movement points gained by your hero ability allows you to run from ally to ally to buff them with every disciple skill you get, and still do a normal turn. Disciple often have the issue to move around to support their allies; Okaluk and Rakash doesn't. Synergy with "Time of Need" is also really amazing.

  • Me myself and I : Mad Carthos / Conjurer

Conjurer rely on his images to be efficient, but spamming them can be quite overwhelming on stamina. Mad Carthos allows you to permanently keep 2 images up for no cost. You can also SPAM focus fire at-will at no cost, which is an incredible and easy damage boost.

  • Hexes for everyone: Landrec the Wise / Hexer

Landrec covers the biggest weakness of Hexer: having surges. The rest is pretty self-explanatory.

  • Ghostly reanimate: Truthseeker Kel / Necromancer

You have to play necromancer to realize how hard it can be to place your reanimate and still keep LOS. Problem solved. But most of all, it helps to setup seriously deadly Army of Death.

  • Overkiller: Tobin Farslayer / Wildlander

So... how could I go over this one. This is probably the highest straight out damage a hero can pull off. With the right items in hand, he will constantly overkill every single one of your monsters, ripping through them as hot butter... across the whole map.

  • Attribute test master: Lindel / Thief

With the lucky charm and Lindel's hero ability and basic attributes, you'll be looking for every secret room you can get. This little guy can get you over many things in many quests. If you manage to get some attribute-boosting items, it's icing on the cake; nothing will resist.

  • Jagger Knight: Lord Hawthorne / Knight

By using some knight skills like Oath of Honor and Advance, plus his heroic feat, he can do some impressive movement and action if well managed.

  • Make your overlord cry in a corner: Nanok of the Blades (1st Edition) / Anything

So hum yeah. That one is... sick. If you're the Overlord; run. Or buy Stewards of the Secret and throw the 1st Edition Sheet in the garbage, or hide it somewhere really safe from your players.

  • Bloodrage Berserker : Krutzbeck / Berserker

Very obvious synergy, but still a strong one. With the Brute skill or Berserker, you can keep yourself a bit less at risk of keeping 6 damage token on your sheet to gain that sweet, sweet free +2damage.

  • Diablo II Berserker : Laughin Buldar / Skirmisher

Still nostalgic about wielding two super huge ass weapons and run through waves of enemies? That's the hero for you. Dual wield some two-handed weapons.

Elder Mok's powerful use of the Bard class is a homage to all underappreciated drummers out there.
