Yep, I goofed on that one.

Mindlink is already the best upgrade for Brobots. If it shared evades too it wouldn't even be an argument.

I have been very successful with Mindlink Scyks in the slightly modified Top Gun format we play in our area. 2 TPV's with Mindlink, heavy Scyk, HLC, hull upgrade, and a black sun ace kirahxz with Mindlink, homing missiles, and guidance chips. It's great, and the kirahxz and M3-A dial is actually good when you're playing a format where soontir and inquisitor aren't allowed.

Top Gun should be an officially supported format with a few tweaks. It's really nice having a format where as long as you build a list that's half decent you have a chance. No hard counters, no winning in the list building phase, all player skill, no Acewings or fat turrets or regen. And no swarms either, or U-Boats for people who hate those.

Just, "I have 2 Scyks and a Kirahxz, you have 2 Royal Guard Interceptors and 2 Crack Squadrons, let's play."

Whats the format for top gun?

Who is the player? Anyone know him?

In the German Forum his call-sign is "Caolilan" and he made Top 4 at the last Nationals in Germany. Cool guy.

Palob and Torkil are such devastating pilots, really showcasing what FFG can do when they remember that they designed the HWK to be one of the least combat capable ships in the game and then compensated with some hard hitting pilot abilities

either those two could probably break the game in an PS 5/3 version of most other ships. Hell, Palob in a Virago Sensor Jammer Starviper is my favorite pipe dream regarding this game ^_^

I'd say that Palob with just Sensor Jammer (doesn't really matter on which ship) would be enough to break it. It's hard for me not to build a squad around him in wave 8.

And if the pilot is so awesome to put Scyks around him and make it, nuff said. Although I must say that ABT sounds like a crazy move.

just as when t-65s take regionals, I'm inclined to say that it probably has more to do with the player being awesome rather than the mathematically inferior ships

Now Palob we already know is awesome, because Palob is a wonderful troll that deserves to be seen in more games

I don't think that's entirely true -- I think it's a mix of high player skill and playing the meta. You're right to say that Scyks aren't good, but they would be able to prey fairly well on U-Boats, given that Palob keeps one from shooting and everyone is shooting before the torpedo boats. Likewise, against aces, Palob steals the all-important tokens, while the Scyks turtle enough to frustrate their offensive output.

Similarly, the Biggs Corran Wes list that took a couple of Regionals has ships with good jousting values -- just not as high as U-Boats or aces. However, the T-65s are designed specifically to prey on both of those lists.

It's sort of like how we saw a bit of VI Imperial Boba in Wave 4. It's a combination of high player skill AND the current meta that puts these ships into contention.

But the Mindlink and Palob's sticky fingers can basically give each Scyk a Focus/Evade each turn for 1 point instead of 3 for PtL, and no immediate stress. Economy of points.

I can see Palob makes a great anti U-boat list with the ability to steal a focus token stopping the deadeye play. The mindlink amps the focus stolen so the linked TPVs can focus on Target locks and evade actions. The autoblaster turret puts you where you want to be inside the range of the torpedoes.

The one downside is how does this list affect Palp Aces. That is the thing about counter lists, they will work great against the top of the meta but will loses to anything else. U-boats may be on top of the hill but they are not the only list on the hill.

Do we know what he played? I don't think this list was designed specifically against U-boats. I think it's just an all around good list. If you think that Palob can steal a Focus from Soontir Fel, and then you can get shots on him with Mangler Cannons, then it's not bad at all. The Scyk has 1 banks and 1 hard turns. It can deal with Interceptors. The whole list has action economy with the Focus and Evade every turn....or even a TL if you know you won't be in arc. Autoblaster Turret is there for aces, as well.

This list would be so much better with hull upgrades. =/ **** syck is 2 points overcosted after title. -1 for the syck itself, -1 for the title. And it should really get other upgrade slots, like illicit.

I've been playing with Mindlink a lot recently but not got around to trying it on my Sycks. This list is a stroke of genius and the only downside I can see is illicit cloaking device going pop on turn 1, that kind of screws over having Intel Agent to a point. Those Sycks don't really want to be barrel roll blockers unless it's going to get you an autoblaster shot...

Given me a few ideas though :)

The Cloak/Stygium combo is an idea of a teammate of mine. He actually came up with it when it was first spoiled.

In swiss I played against:
1 Stressbot, double VCX - win (100:0)

Stressbot went down in one round of firing, VCX did not move well.

4 WAMPA! - win 3/4 (hard to remember those; mostly focused Omega down, then wampa, then palp, good autoblaster position really helps)

1 Kavil (pseudo uboat loadout), Palob, Manaroo (uboat) - win (100:24)

My Palob tanked 2 torps with cloak though a rock, then focused on his exposed Palob, then Kavil.

1 Whisper Chiraneau (Aggressive, RebelCaptive) - win (100:24)

Whisper moved in early, got in autoblaster range +manglers = quick kill. Got behind the deci and killed that

1 Blockmaster (w EU), double uboat - loss (16:100)

actually the other finalist; underestimated the speed of the boostmaster, lost palob quickly, went quick downhill afterwards

1 game did not happen bc opponent dropped after pairings (was weird) - win by default

In the Finals:
Quarter Finals: Palob, Guri, Manaroo - crazy game, I think I won through winning initiative roll and passing initiative to opponent

Semi Finals: Dengar (LW, Gonk, Painbot, ExpInt), Tel Trevura (uboat loadout) - opponent turned into me too quickly, I focused dengar down hard. also hot dice for me

Finals: Blockmaster (w EU), double uboat - Went alot better, than the first game. I was sometimes too cautious with my maneauvers so I couldn't focus enough firepower to overcome cold dice :( Still a great game. In the end I lost because of small mistakes I think.

General Tactics:

  • Movement order is white, red, green. This is super important. Don't mess up! Uniform PS really helps.
  • Palob tanks range 3 shots then decloaks aggressively to block and mess things up with autoblaster.
  • Don't move in formation. The scyks need to come in from different directions, so one can K-Turn, while the others move green.
  • Scyks are pretty good in a furball. The dial is pretty good and they can barrel roll!
  • Combined with Intel Agent they can make safe blocks and set up killzones
  • Damaged ships are still useful as they can disengage and still provide focus tokens. Especially Palob, as he has trouble getting back into the fight if his approach wasn't good or his cloak got busted.
  • Sometimes the cloak gets busted imediatly. Tough Luck. Keep calm and make the best of it. Honestly this is probably the biggest weakness of the list and I have no go-to plan in that situation, as Palob is usually already exposed then I trigger the cloak. Best guess is to bump something and deny shots on him.

I think the list is quite versatile as it has a lot of tools to deal with different threats. The scyks are actually quite good ships, they are just too expensive. Or too frail depending how you look at it. I really wish the title would also incease the hullpoints if a weapon is equipped.

Defenders dropped just now and I have no idea how i will fare against them. They sure look strong.

Palob seems to become a new backbone in scumlists that are not based on large ships. His ability is just so good. He and Mindlink are imho the best designed cards in the game. You can do so much stuff with it, it's wonderful.

Overall it's a list that takes some time to get used to and takes a high amount of coordination as the whole turn needs to be planned in advance. But it's great fun if everything works out. I sure enjoyed it more than most other lists I played in the last months.
