Let's talk about 5 Crackshot A wings

By Zeodra, in X-Wing Squad Lists

A surprising build finding its way to meta is 5 x Green Squadron pilots with Chaardan Refit, A-Wing Test Pilot, Autotrusters, Crack Shot, and Adaptability. Lets discuss the strategies including type of formation and astroid placement to make this list competitive. What builds does this list struggle against, and how to compromise to face those lists? How can you use adaptability to improve this build?

How are people using adaptability? Do people use PSI 2 to be able to block better and PSI 4 to avoid the 3 U boats? Do people alternate the pilots skills? How would you use adaptability?

I took this list to the Yavin Open recently. I put in a good number of games with it in advance, against big ships, aces, mixed lists etc. and my win/loss rate was excellent (I can only think of one game I lost, due to my error messing up the opening engagement).

I wouldn't say I was super confident going in, but I knew I had a list that could take on the meta with success. My ace blocking game was well honed, and my jumpmaster grind down was ready rock.

But it didn't work out so well.

Game 1 vs Dash and Lothal Rebel. I played pretty well, no major mistakes, took this one 100-20. Opponent was a great guy too so super start to the day.

Then it started to go downhill when I met my nemesis. The first of three tie swarms.

The one big downside to the 5A Crackswarm is that the Tie crack swarm trumps it. I think in some matches the As have the advantage (autothrusters and shields being the main ones)- but in the head to head, the ties are better and more efficient.

Games 2,3,4 were all against similar 6 Tie Crackswarms. A few variations here and there, but overall the lists did the same job.

In all three games my opponents had the initiative, which is massive. When the game breaks down into a moshpit, they'll have actions, you won't. It only really goes on way from there.

I tried things slightly different in each of the three games, a couple of times using one A as a blocker (PS2) which worked ok, but after the first block, it was tricky to get another as the ties can just move so fast.

After losing three in a row, my hopes of making day 2 of the open were done, which was really dissapointing. I didn't get to face aces or JMs once, what I was geared up to face.

I was expecting to lose some games, but I felt like I was done before I got a chance to really have a go.

So yeah, it's a cool list, but the Tie swarm is a nightmare.

How are people using adaptability? Do people use PSI 2 to be able to block better and PSI 4 to avoid the 3 U boats? Do people alternate the pilots skills? How would you use adaptability?

I would assume almost always PS4. One could maybe consider making one PS2 to block, but it probably isn't quite worth it.
