New player resources

By Hayati, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Dear all

I am a veteran FFG LCG player and am very excited about L5R!

I tried to find some tutorial videos but I couldn't find anywhere an actual game was played out with discussion. Instead, there were card breakdowns and phase breakdowns. I would prefer to see the rules in the context of the game being played.

Could anyone let me know where I could find such learning material?

Thanks a lot in advance!

The L5R LCG doesn't exist yet in a publicly consumable form.

If you are referring to the CCG, there weren't many recordings. One guy did a lot of Twitch streaming, but a lot of his L5R content is gone now. I did find THIS however, which is just a live game recording so you'll learn virtually no rules without a rulebook in front of you.

Thanks guys! Yes, I was referring to the CCG for the time being.

Aside from the above, I did find 5 excellent short videos produced by a Malaysian group that went through the game rounds in a play environment.

Yes, this stuff is amazing:

Having gone through said rules, I note that in battle, the loser loses all units and the winner nothing.

How do experienced players find this, as opposed to a system where both sides suffer casualties (e.g. Conquest)?

It really depends on many factors.

In 20 years history of game some editions (like blocks in MtG) were more deadly than others and in many battles there was kill for kill. Some editions had lot or resurrection tricks. Some was full of movement so that leaded to one final battle because earlier defending was risky.

Ivory Edition also brought two new keywords Resilient (Once per game per card, a Resilient card does not die in battle resolution) and Expendable (Draw a card after your Expendable card is destroyed) that help when you lose.

Anyway L5R was always "when and who is going to oppose and what do you want to gain".

Defensive Honor/Dishonor decks try to save province sacrificing their chosen people while netting some honor gains or losses that leads them to faster victory. Or "soften" attackers (by send home) to score massive honor gains for destroying cards in battle resolution. There were also "escape button" cards like Encircled Terrain that helped to finish battle without massacre.

Having not jumped into the CCG until the current rotation edition (Ivory), the best way to learn in addition to reading the rule book is just to look at the cards. The 20F cards have a lot of good instruction built into the card's game text, so just buy an L2P set that contains two ready-made decks and play through.
