Bomber title .... am I missing the point?

By shotbyscott, in X-Wing

I'm not coming to grips with the new bomber title. All i can think of is Simitar with Tactician and Systems officer in a 5 ship swarm. Is there more to it? or is it just an yeaa what ever title?

It is a cheap way of bringing a ship with crew slots to the field. It is also faster than a Lambda. For the points it compares well enough to the HWK.

Look at all the Imperial crew with interesting effects ... lots of options.

Doombomber: Vader

Stress shuttle: Tactician + Mara Jade or Rebel Captive + Mara Jade or Rebel Captive + Tactician

Support shuttle: Systems Officer + Fleet Officer

Tanky bomber: Ysanne Isard

Crit shuttle: Mercenary Copilot + Saboteur

Vessery support shuttle: Weapons Engineer + Systems Officer

Recon bomber: Intel Agent

ner it's pretty **** situational

I like the 19 Fleet Officer Bomber in very certain lists.

The Scimitar with Intel Agent and Mara Jade makes a heck of a blocker.

Or Intel Agent + Tactician.

This. I'm running a shuttle with the Fleet Officer in a list, and I could save myself a very critical six points by dropping down to the bomber. Of course, I also lose the 3 attack on the shuttle...

It makes the Bomber a lighter, but far more maneuverable, shuttle that you may use a lot like you would a support lambda build.

Possibly still early days but I kinda agree with OP. Seems limited use with current crew. The fact is that it remains to squishy to invest much in the way of support function. I'd rather just use it as a bomber with rockets long range scanners or chimps. Guess I need to try a few more games with it....

But the shuttle can turn around significantly easier and k turn.

Also it's got two agility making up for the difference in hit points.

Just think of the possibilities when the Empire gets its wave of unique, cheap, super useful crew the way that the Rebels and Scum have received, because you know it is coming.

The title gives you the following crackswarm variant:

Gamma Sq Veteran + Crackshot + title + systems & fleet officer: 25 pts

Black sq Pilot + Crackshot X5 = 75

we'll call it the S.S Wish I Were Howlrunner :P

I want to run Jonus with Fleet Officer + Wired (and maybe another TBD crew) alongside some combination of Defender and Bomber.

ok I'm gonna have to try the blocker idea

It's 6 health to the Lambda's 10, but it's rolling twice as many agility dice and it's on a small base (IE., smaller target, as well as the enemy never getting half points for it)

IE., it's not that much 'squishier'.

Guys, one green dice in no way compensates for 4 hitpoints. Thats not terrible, since it is cheaper by quite a bit, but don't kid yourselves, the Bomber is very squishy.

I wouldn't suggest it's about to set the world on fire as the new Imperial go-to squad, but you can do a lot worse for a consistent alpha strike. It's especially effective if you can keep Jonus just outside range 3 on the initial engagement so he's buffing but not a target. Howlie 101 I know, but a lot of people have never run a swarm.

It's all about the doombomber. A 19pt anti-ace ship that doesn't need a palpmobile to work. It can also slow roll very nicely, so acts as great denial against a host of horrible ships, while the rest of your team get to work. Goddamn bargain...

I've been using a Gamma with Vader, Rebel Captive and Hull Upgrade.

Yes he's a bit pricier but he's been very useful alongside two Defenders so far. Four games in and I'm liking it very much. The dial and Barrel Roll make it far more effective than I thought it would be.

Regarding squishy: 6hp@2agi is equivalent to 8hp@1agi.

So it's 20% less tough than a shuttle, ability to positionally avoid shots (which is honestly in the Bombers favor) aside.

So use it for cheap crew, and Then might be onto something, but I'd hesitate to try and make them 'fat', even if the options were there to do so.

I've tried this almost exact list (though no system Officer, since Jonus gives rerolls)

(two ties for blockers instead of the third bomber) and it's still not good

Problem with Jonus. Formation flying your easier to predict and his ability doesn't work on himself if you use him as ordnance carrier

I've come to find when flying against higher PS ships that can reposition, they can still get behind you pretty quick and I've had Jonus die before I even get to use his rerolls.

Bombers as ordnance carriers imo does not work well.

No shields means a lot of times when you do take dmg it's a crit.

I've had better success running 3 scimitar all with tactician, and Rebel captive, Fleet Officer, and Mara jade, escorting something with punch

Sadly other than the new pilot tomax, don't think they will make the splash myself and others had hoped for

The squad you want is 3x Gamma Veteran, 3x Homing Missile, 3x Deadeye, 3x Guidance Chips, 3x Extra Munitions, and a Scimitar Squadron with TIE Shuttle and Fleet Officer.

Problem is with this, your still restricted to flying somewhat in formation in order to get the support shuttle ability.

I was thinking maybe 1 or two Gammas then put something that is equally, or more threatening, like Whisper or something.

Your not restricted to flying in formation, bombers still don't die easy, and pack a punch. If opponent goes for the bombers that leaves your ace room to so his thing, and if they chase the ace, then your bombers are able to fire off their payload.

I don't think running a full squad is as effective. Even if your not keeping them in formation, their dial is hard to keep up with those that can maneuver and reposition.

Just my thoughts on them as ordnance carriers
