My New Acrylic Templates

By Segmentvs, in X-Wing

I finally decided to purchase some acrylic templates. I decided to go with CogOTwo. Looks like I should have waited until after brexit for the currency exchange. ;)

Anyway. I am very happy with them. Only two minor issues. Two of my range templates have the wrong faction. Think we had a communication mix up and it isn't important to me to try and replace them. The range 5 also had some very minor quality issues that didn't show until I painted them.

I am delighted they were able to do everything in white for me. All in all a good experience. I even enjoyed painting them up.

Nifty. Not sure how much mileage you'll get out of the range 4 ruler, though.

Edit: Don't get me wrong, it looks great, but how many times does something end up at almost R4? Still, it let's you store your range rulers in a 3x5 rectangle, which must look cool.

I know. I just wanted the consistency.

Cog O Two are terrific. Their stuff always looks awesome and their customer service is outstanding.

Someone posted on the UK X-Wing FB group saying he'd lost one of his Cog O Two movement templates at Yavin and asking if anyone had accidentally picked it up. At which point Michaela from Cog O Two pops up in the comments to say don't worry about it, send me your address and we'll chuck you a replacement in the post. That's pretty great. :D

At a tournament, I would cry foul and demand you use my maneuver templates for 1 reason only. The 2,3,4,5 straights all are divided into 1 speed segments. By careful manipulation you can get a good sense of where to go/speed to take for your next turn. That is why official FFG products (not to mention other good Acrylic sets like Litko and Team Covenant) don't do it.

You should probably go back to 40k with that attitude.

Cog 'O' Two make for my money the best looking templates available. The fancy German ones are great too, but just a bit busy for my tastes. I've also seen examples of their great customer service. When a friend of mine lost his 1-Streight he contacted them about buying a replacement and they just sent him a range 1 ruler and a 1-straight template for no charge.

As for the segmented thing, I've seen that complaint before and I really don't buy it. You can get the same advantage from knowing the layout of popular mats or simply by having a basic sense of spatial awareness.

Cry foul definitly isn't the way to go about it, but politely demanding is absolutely fine with me. I wouldn't care, since these lengths aren't that hard to judge, but I can understand why someone would.

Good luck with that. There is nothing in the tournament regulations that forbid that. Nor has FFG ever taken issue with it. A player may request to use a single template set, but don't go in with the attitude that you can demand things. There is a very large difference.

The straight maneuvers are by far the easiest to judge. Segmented maneuver templates don't provide any real advantage to anyone experienced enough to be playing at a competitive level.

This is my design I just made on my own. I think they turned out pretty well. The aurebesh was my way of personalizing them besides making all the other graphics myself as well. It's my last name when long, and my initials when short.

I found out that a factory neighboring my company's factory in China can make them for me for about $3. They only have 2 colors available: a neon yellowish green or a bright redish orange. I think I'll go with the green to match my 2014 store championship range ruler.

I got my hands on some red imperial ones this weekend at the convention i was at.

I'd like to ask- how did you go about painting them? What paint did you use?

I am not sure how to go about it myself so would love advice

Is the paper still on them?

Mine came with paper cover all but the etching. I used citadel abbadon black and a flat shader brush. After it dried I would peel the paper and clean up as needed. I also did some touch ups with a detail brush and would wipe off wet excess paint with my finger. Clean up often entailed scraping some paint off with a fingernail.

After that, I wiped them all down with a paper towel I had sprayed with a mild all purpose surface cleaner.

I hope that helps.

Nice! I got exactly the same set minus the rare templates, i ordered mine prepainted they were very well done.

Their tokens are great too.

At a tournament I'd use FFG cardboard just for you, then have a chuckle with my mates about your petty complaints. You'd be remembered as that one guy who had an issue with my templates over some nonsense.

With the red, you might want to go with white paint. The black would work, but might be a bit dark on the red. Take a look at the sites selling them for paint color ideas.

I wanted to go black because that very much feels "Imperial" to me, because pf Darth Vader and Palpatine.

So I got my templates today. The factory outlined my graphics for some reason but they still are readable. The quality of the acrylic isn't perfect...has a few imperfections. But for $3 to have my own custom acrylic templates I can't complain.

Plus they match my range ruler!
