PSA on ordering magnets from K&J magnetics in the U.S.

By dewbie420, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

I held back for quite a while deciding to get magnets for my ships because I thought the shipping was too high BUT today I noticed K&J has an option to get your items delivered via US Mail. The price was only $5, compared to the default setting for UPS: $12.95.

So I finally ordered them today. I just felt weird buying something for 7 bucks and paying 13 for delivery.

I got enough stuff to convert 13 small peg/stands and 7 large for just $14.68

I've always gotten my magnets off of Ebay or Alibaba. Free shipping, low prices, and long lead times (straight from China).

K&J is a very good supplier and the USPS option is a very good way to go for the sizes and quantiles we buy. The package will fit in any standard mailbox so you know it's a secure delivery and not left out or held in an office some ware. I do tend to buy in bulk though, 500 or more magnets at a time. I use the D22 magnets for basses and scenery as well as some weapons options on vehicles. Their D68PC-RB is a great buy as a 'tool' to make sure you have you polarity right before gluing anything in.

Havd you tried the 1/8" diameter spherical magnets? I like the idea of using mags but don't like the look of a metal disk glued to the bottom of a ship. The small spherical mags have a theoretical pull of .41 pounds and I was thinking of using a small set screw sunk into the ship. With the magnet on the support rod there's no need to worry about polarity.

I'd like to give this a try and it SHOULD work for most small based ships but not entirely sure.

Have you tried ordering the same day that an X-Wing release goes on the boat to see what gets here first?

I noticed that as well the last time I ordered from them. Cheap flat rate shipping, but not as the default for some reason.

I agree on wanting to feel the order is big enough to justify the shipping cost, which is why I make sure to order at least $15 worth of magnets at a time and just have enough for future ships(which reminds me I need to reorder as I'm all out of small ship magnets).

K & J were awesome. I'm still waiting a month and a 1/2 later for some disc magnets from China. I got 50 ring magnets for my large base ships. But another good option is Greenstuffworld. I got 4 packs of 15 countersunk magnets 3.5 mm diameter, with ball bearings. They are pretty much the same diameter of the pegs so drilling holes for them into my minis shouldn't remove much of the actual ships. Also Greenstuffworld sells Countersunk Magnets in larger sizes (with ball bearings) for larger ships all the way up to Huge ships

I've had good luck with most of the ships i have magnetized, but i boobooed in ordering the wrong size magnet rings, for the ballbearings i have..

For those who HAVE magnetized some of their ships. How many of them did you do? All? Half? Just the ones you always use??

I get my magnets from Green Stuff World to avoid this problem LT. The rotation magnets come with the ball bearings in the package. They ship from Europe but I'm pretty sure that I've ordered three times and they've always arrived in under 2 weeks.

I know if I ordered from K&J I would do the same thing, so I take the extra lead time to idiot proof the process (although at this point I don't really need any more ball bearings).

I only did a few at first but it's a really easy process, so I ended up doing everything eventually. Once the pegs are done getting the magnets on the ship takes no time at all. I would recommend for the larger ships leaving the peg on at first just in case your magnet isn't the right size.

Well, i still have 9 of the balls from my prior order, and am getting 21 more, with 30 of the proper size counter-sunk magnets.. So i can magnetize 30 of my ships.. The smaller magnets from my prior order, i just am using to mag the bases of rebel ships where the pegs broke off..

I'll eventually get around to doing most or all of my collection, but for now I magnetize all ships I paint and the ships that my daughter and I fly regularly.

I've had great luck from K&J. I use their R421 ring magnet . 50 of them is $11, plus $5 for shipping. After a bad experience using R421s and the little ball bearings, I've switched entirely to using two R421 rings per ship: One for the ship, and one for the peg. Using 2x ring magnets keeps the ships nicely horizontal in play. The bad experience I had with ring & ball involved a squad of five TIE bombers. Even though I glued the balls in the center of gravity of the ships, they'd still end up at all sorts of crazy distracting angles during play.

I do have two notes on using R421s: 1) You've got to keep track of their polarity, so that all of your ships work with all of your pegs. If you mix polarity, you'll have a mix of incompatible ships and pegs to keep track of. 2) I don't magnetize my ships until after they're completely painted. I use a lightly glued-in peg wrapped in masking tape to hold my ships while painting.

Yea i found that polarity thing out. 2 of the 5 ships i glued in that form, i had the ship's polarity wrong. So only the base pegs i put in that opposite form work with them.. AND as i used superglue, they are a pain to get off...
