What are your top most-satisfying X-Wing moments?

By davidhaus, in X-Wing

Last night at casual night there was a K-Wing bombing list that successfully destroyed a Bro-Bots list just with bombs. This led to some fun discussion about the most-satisfying moments playing X-Wing.

We've all had those moments playing this game where it just makes you smile and love this game just a little bit more. I think those moments are some of the things that keep us going when we go through hard streaks and losses.

Here are my top 3 most-satisfying general moments in playing X-Wing:

3) Successfully hitting your opponent with a well-placed bomb. (Even better when it's an Imperial Ace! :D )

2) Boba-Fett'ing an Emperor Palpatine off his ship.

1) Killing Soontir Fel.

(Quick Story about that last one: At US Nationals last weekend I played (and lost to) Duncan Howard, the eventual champ. However, my proudest moment came when I killed his Soontir Fel with his Stealth Device still in place. My Bumpmaster Scout got 3 damage on him in 3 consecutive turns, courtesy of R5-P8 (first turn), Feedback Array (second turn), and Anti-Pursuit Lasers (third turn). So much fun!)

What are your most-satisfying moments playing this great game?

Green Squad Pilot (awing) doing an epic 30-round dogfight with Keyan (Bwing).

I had the superior speed and agility as the Awing, but he had the superior power and the ability to 2k right into my face.

I am not joking this lasted 30 some rounds lol. He kept trying to predict my approach and i kept making my safe approaches slightly too wide so i'd fail to get arc, but wouldnt get shot in the process. It finally ended when i said SCREW IT and 5k'd through a rock then did a 5straight back through the rock and sneaked a range1 on his side lol. Stupid rock took out a shield each pass so if he got a shot at that point i was done for lol. Fortunately he never got one.

In general, I like when I have a plan and the plan works. My favorite was getting my Zuckuss list to work! Having Zuckuss throw 5 dice at range 2 against a target with -1 agility was very satisfying! Especially when Zuckuss was able to one-shot a fully regenerated Poe Dameron!

Zuckuss

-Expose

-Experimental Interface

-K4 Security Droid

-Advanced Sensors

Lattz Razzi

-Weapons Engineer

Serissu

-Heavy Scyk Interceptor

-Tractor Beam

Other than that list, I generally just love the feeling of predicting a maneuver and successfully blocking an enemy ship with a low PS pilot.

Dropping a proton bomb into the middle of a TIE swarm.

Rexlar Brath soloing Chiraneau (he had 9 face up cards on him when he went, and some of them had been faceup before).

Damaging an entire enemies squad (and killing Guri) with a YV666 with dead man's switch, 1 hull left, and that crit that causes damage when you overlap.

Dumping a prox mine forward through a rock onto Poe using Deathrain, then barrel rolling so I didn't hit the rock afterward (I was millimeters from landing on the rock).

Beating a TIE Swarm with two K-Wings. Not that it was that difficult given how crzy SLAM is, the statisfying part was that I actually kept my patience and made the right calls. I rarely do that :D

Also one-shotting Soontir Fel with my Bossk on a tournament after two badly lost games.

14th after day one of hoth open.

Oh, I almost forgot my one-shot Rexler Brath story :D that was fun (for me)... (APT from Nera with Deadeye/RecSpec pumped up by Jan Ors)

1) Throwing a ship--any ship--onto an asteroid with tractor beam. It's like making out with the prom queen.

2) Waaaaaay back in the days of wave 3 or so, I was running a double firespray list in a tournament against a guy whose local group had never seen engine upgrade on a large ship. He just could not get his mind around the boost maneuver... and by the end of the game, he had not rolled a single red die.

Seeing the models on a Star filled board immediately after deployment but before the game begins.

Beautiful!

flying a Z-95 pirate into an opposing Z-95 swarm and dealing 5 damage to 5 different Z's with Dead Man's Switch :D

Losing and actually knowing how they got me.

Oh, heres another good one.

My early days i initially bought the Punisher (been playing 4-5 months) because "gotta have 1 bigger ship" and it was the biggest non-large imperial.

Anyway, i ran Redline with Clusters and this was my first match against the usual Aces (vader soontir inquis). I forget what i had besides him, lost the match in the end, but what i did to the inquis was glorious.

Redline was pretty far away from Inquis and moves first. If it wasnt redline, this wouldnt work, but it was. I blasted forward as fast as possible and dumped mines out the front...which the inquis immediately did a 1soft right over ALL 3 OF THEM and blew up from full to dead :D that felt gooooood... then vader punished my punisher...

My first ever tourney, first match. I win with 1 hull left on Chewie :P I should have retired - undefeated

Anytime you win without losing a ship:

In a furball I had Tabonbane on the tail of my B-Wing. I did a straight-1 and he flew right in front of me and I blew him up. That was a long time ago and he still mentions it when I see him.

Second Tourney ever was the KC regional in 2015. Brought a Fat Han Corran Horn list. Despite two losses (both embarrassing) I managed top 16 and got some sweet shield tokens.

Played in a furball tourney with 12 players. Brought the most ridiculous Kavil and despite coming in second place (flew off board in the last round d'oh) I'm fairly certain I had the most fun....especially the time I prox mined Poe off the table after everyone else had been hounding him all game.

when you s-loop around the asteroids juust right...

...and then wind up blocking some ******* interceptor so he lands on one+all your other ships get to shoot him

At our local Winnipeg Regionals last weekend, I flew my Palpmobile list (Yorr with Palp, Omega Leader w/Juke and Comm Relay, and Whisper w/ACD, Agent Kallus, Veteran Instincts and FCS) against a Kanan / Dash List. Omega Leader managed to score a double Crit on the VCX-100 with Kanan. 1st Crit was a Major Explosion which flipped up a Direct Hit. The 2nd Crit was ALSO a major explosion, which flipped up a Structural Damage card (not that it did any good on a 0 agility ship, but I digress). 5 damage from a ship that could only have hoped to deal out 2 at the range I was at.

I ended up losing that match, but I put it firmly in the WIN category.

Anytime I k-turn over a rock and either outright win or get someone out of position for a few turns. I'm thinking of calling that move "the spanish inquisition"

Barrel rolling in for a block

Basically anytime I just totally win the maneuvering game :)

I have a tendency to fly my rebels hard. I push to engage at point blank, throw extra dice with mods and fly through the debris left by exploded ships. This one game my opponent set up 3 of his four ships directly across from my three rebel X-wings. As usual I rushed forward while he slow played. At about range 4 I dropped to a 1 straight while he k turned in front of me. I ended up with 3 range 1 shots with focus and no return fire.

It was a short game.

Many moons ago, I landed a Direct Hit! off of a blank-crit result at range 3 against a shieldless, cloaked and focused Whisper with a Bandit Squadron Pilot.

That's s bit personal. Can't tell ya.

Lt. Blount with AHM. Currents one-shot scalps: Whisper, Corran, Fel, Jax, Poe, Vader. All with full shields and tokened up. All very salty about their prize ships disappearing in the first round of shooting, to a Z.

At a Store Championship, running 2 very oddly built Jumpmasters with an equally odd Palob, against a Triple Aces list. Carnor clipped a rock, so he couldn't boost into R1. Fel pulled a boost and barrel roll into R1 behind one of the Jumps. Vader sat at R3 between two rocks. Jumpy 1 took all the damage, and survived with just one hull. Palob robbed Fels focus, and used it against him to ion his stressed self out of the way. A torp into Carnor took care of him, thanks to a nice crit and no actions. Next turn, I pull a sloop with Jumpy 1 to block Vader, lining him up in arc of Jumpy 2, ion Fel again thanks to Crackshot, and then put a torp each into Fel and Vader for the clear.

I honestly felt awful for how it went, but it was still satisfying to see that my rather odd anti-ace build did exactly what I'd intended it to do.

At Regionals last week, two moments in particular. A suicide Feedback array to assure mutual destruction of my Jumpmaster and an Inquisitor, followed a few turns later by the same to Fel to guarantee the win, and a double-feedback plus ion to take out Whisper, and send Chiraneau off the board in a single turn, in the final. The fact that the final was a rematch against someone who had utterly rolled me in round 2, and the top 4 game was against a local who is definitely one of the best players I've met, made the whole thing incredible.

I had Wedge with Predator and Engine Upgrade, Jan Ors with Blaster Turret and Kyle Katarn, and Etan Abaht against a classic TIE swarm.

Flew them in a pincer formation with Wedge hugging the edge of the board, Etahn cutting up the middle at an angle towards the swarm, which had angled itself towards Wedge and Jan up the middle between them. Jan gave Wedge extra dice, he boosted into range 1; dodging half of their firing arcs in the process, and lit a TIE up in the first volley with 4/5 hits after Predator rolls. Etahn was handing out crits all over the place, giving Jan a one shot kill also thanks to a Direct Hit. Round one of firing they were down two TIES and a third injured and Wedge only had to defend against one weak shot in return. Wedge accounted for 5 TIE kills that game, 4 of them in single shots thanks to extra Jan Ors dice and Etan's crits.

On the Dark Side, I'd say the first time I realized just how maneuverable and dodgy Baron Fel was with Push the Limit. I forget what I was flying against but the feeling of maneuvering him like that was like when you figured out how to ride a bike, like a whole new area of your brain opens up and I had my 'AHA!' moment with the FlightPath System.
Following that, Fel became my favorite ship/pilot to play and I remember another game where he chased down Chewbacca, turret at range 1 be damned, and dodged everything while laying at least 3 damage on him every turn until he exploded. Fel coasted away without a scratch.

Getting wave 6 before anyone else in the world.

Yeah that was great.
