Need some help with storage!

By ChewfalconSolo, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Hey guys.

I love X-Wing. I love the ships. I love the gameplay and everything else that has to do with it.

But as a new player.

These can take up a lot of space rather quickly!

How do you guys store your ships inside and outside of tournaments and matches.

How do you take them to and from the stores you compete at?

Any help in this matter is great. Thanks!

I use a fishing tackle box, plano brand, $14. throw on some stickers and ppl think it was made for X wing

Hiya! Storage is one question that lots of people have a hard time with. Sometimes, they find a solution, and then their collection grows! It can be a real challenge.

First off, where are you at? If in the US, then you have affordable access to Plano tackle boxes.

Lots of people recommend foam trays (Battlefoam and others). I've done it for other games and it can get REALLY expensive. You have to buy the bag and then each foam tray. Soon, your collection grows and you need even more trays. Each tray costs $10-15. Next, you need a bigger bag. It gets downright silly in costs. I've played other games with and painted minis and find it not a bad option for things you want to protect. X-wing comes pre-painted and I just can't justify the cost of foam for minis that I've had fine in other formats.

There is a guy who makes "tuck boxes" for all the ships. He offers them for free PDF downloads. I think you google "X-wing tuck box" and you should find it. You can actually fit a lot of these boxes in the Core Set box for cheap storage. Well...the cost of printing. These are good options to start off with.

If you know you are going to expand and want something at least in the meantime, I would recommend getting one or two Plano trays that you can just put in a book bag or laptop bag. I did that for quite a while.

The best method to store tokens and such is with a pill container. There are a 101 different options for old people to store pills in different formats. I've got one of those little ones with Sunday-Saturday on the little compartments. It holds a lot of my tokens.

I would recommend Plano trays. They are affordable and easy to find. You can pick them up on sale often. They have different sizes that you need, but I'd go with large and expect to expand. I like ones with open tops so you can store other stuff. I even fit a CR-90 up top for a while in one. I also like the trays that you can fit a ship still on the peg/base for easy putting on the table. If you aren't too rough, there should be no trouble with breaking it. I've used mine for years and not had an issue.

If you go to a sports store with a coupon or sale, I would recommend looking at all the different options for tackle boxes. If you open them all up and look at all the trays, you might even be able to juggle the trays around and slip in a different tray from a different box for what you want. I was able to do this and get a Plano tray that has a side open spot in it as well as other smaller slots. I can fit my templates, asteroids, and damage deck there.

If you want epic, there is a Plano tray that fits the, but there is no case for it. You will have to find another method for that. I'm thinking of just getting a duffel bag.

When it comes to upgrade cards, some people prefer card binders. Personally, I lived that nightmare with Magic the Gathering and never want to do that again. I was lucky enough to win some early FFG cardboard boxes in tournaments and use them. I'm outgrowing them, though. I did just find out about a really good card case: Broken Token Mini-American Card Case. It's affordable and lets you organize 400-700 cards (depending on sleeved or not). I just got one and am in the process of organizing my little cards. I might have just a few too many. If I had to put all those in binders....I'd be looking for a way to lug around my binders!

Hope this helps!
