Expansion Pack buying advice

By Cgriffith, in X-Wing

Relatively new to the game, but want to pick up the Falcon expansion pack. My question is what is a good counter in regards to strength (i.e. Including upgrades, pilot skill etc.) ? My brother in law and I would like to play but I want comparable ships so that our flying ability is the difference not the ships OP ability. Thanks in advance!!

The YT-2400 could certainly be a competent all-in-one expansion to put up against the Falcon out of the box. Both are large base ships featuring the ability to fire outside of their primary firing arcs, and the YT-2400 comes pre-packed with most of the equipment it would want to get use out of its Outrider title.

Starting off just get the ships you think are cool. Until you start playing pretty confidently dont bother trying to make the ultimate lists.

Falcon is a good buy. Its not a terrible ship by any means but it isnt insanely good either, its just a good one.

I started with imperials and i just bought 1 of every ship to begin with. Only repeats i got before i started buying non-imp stuff was tie/fo and a third tie adv.

Everyone has different tastes in what they like to fly. You wont find yours if you dont run it all a few times.

Or something like more TIEs or an equally annoying large based turret...say a decimator?

Could go with the Slave 1 perhaps? If only for the iconic rivalry.

The Falcon is a rather solid ship, but it struggles against anything that can mount autothrusters, because that helps to negate her huge firing arc. Things like interceptors, a-wings, aggressors... a lot of people go with Han, but Chewbacca is also a great choice because of his ability to ignore critical hits... if he goes with Chewie, take advantage of the his mid level pilot skill, anything that moves after him and also has autothrusters will annoy him.

Thank you for the suggestions everyone I do have two more questions regarding suggestions.

1. What makes the YT-2400 so formative against the Falcon? (Upgrades, Hull strength, maneuverability etc.)

2. The Decimator why that ship any certain qualities.

Thank you again, everyone

depends on what faction your bro-in-law wants to fly

but if it can take auto-thrusters, it'll work not so horribly against the welcome

so if your bro-in-law is scum (which bro-in-law isn't?) he's in luck, because thrusters come with the Starviper and prince xizor is pretty dang spiffy

Dash specifically.

The usual dash build has a 4die range3 attack that doesnt give the target a bonus defense dice since its a secondary weapon and counts as a turret (basically he swaps his pathetic turret with a cannon upgrade, so you lose your main gun but now have a turreted cannon). With Push The Limits you can easily keep away from Han as well, acquire targetlock first to see the distance. If you can acquire but hes fairly close, boost/barrelroll away so now its range 3 and he gives YOU an extra attack die but you dont give HIM one.

Falcon simply cant chase Dash down, and Dash has higher agility to begin with so coupled with the long range, less dice, and barrelroll natively on his bar hes really hard to take out. Drawback is if you get someone in range1 of Dash he cant attack at all, so if the falcon does somehow get to range1 you're hosed lol.

Well, both the YT-2400 and the Decimator are Primary Weapon Turrets (or PWT's). When the Falcon came out....and when used with Engine Upgrade, it became a good tactic to try to sucker your opponent into committing to "joust" the Falcon (fly at each other and shoot at each other), but the Falcon (going at PS 9 with Han Solo) would do a hard turn one way, and then a Boost action the other...and avoid all firing arcs. Once in this position, you can fire away at the other ships while not getting fired at in return. It caused a lot of frustration in the game. With the other two ships, they don't need to worry about firing arcs. In fact, moving becomes a lot less of a concern since both of you just need to fire in all directions at each other.

Personally, I think you can probably go with the Imperial Veterans pack to have a decent counter. If you can get a ship with Missiles or Torpedoes to fire at the Falcon, it can take a lot of damage. The Tie Bomber can do that. The Tie Defender with the new titles can also add in some extra punch. I think that is a different take on facing off against the Falcon.

oh don't turn it into PWT v PWT. you just turn it into a dice fest

what's cool about Dash is the outrider title with Heavy Laser cannon is one of very few ships that makes maneuvering matter v the falcon

  • if left alone, Dash's greater damage output with HLC will win the dice-fest versus the falcon
  • the falcon, then, must traverse obstacles and fly incredibly well in order to nestle within range 1 where the Outrider literally cannot shoot him

it becomes a wildly tense game of cat and mouse that really stresses use of obstacles and maneuvering with/around them

flying Outrider Dash is literally the only time I've ever had fun versus a fat PWT, as it really stresses both players' inputs and efforts rather than how lucky they are

Thank you for all suggestions. I'm going to read a little more if I have more questions I know I'll have a lot of help. Thanks again

I second the statement to buy what you think is cool. I could tell you that the Jumpmaster 5000 or the Decimater are good equivalents for the Falcon, but if you and your brother in law have never heard of them then you're not going to have as much fun as you would if you were flying your favorite ships from the movies.

Competive play is great and all that, but for starting out and casual play it's a lot more fun to fly, say, Luke & Wedge & Biggs against Darth Vader and a bunch of TIEs.

So yeah, but what you think is cool. If you're worrie about balance, then ask a different question. Something along the lines of "we want to fly the falcon against Slave 1- how balanced are they? What can we do to make it an even matchup?"

Imperial Veterans is a solid expansion in general- X7 defenders are terrifyingly efficient while the Tie/d has a number of nasty combos, and Tie Bombers with Long Range sensors make for a pretty impressive alpha strike. So it'd get my vote. It also lends itself well to further purchases, since picking up the original tie bomber and tie defender expansions will give you more options and the ability to run two defenders/bombers with the new options at the same time. If your brother in law finds he likes bombers, the Tie Punisher Expansion gives you a super bomber and comes with the potent Extra Munitions card, which makes bombers much more efficient, while the Inquisitor's Tie comes with Deadeye and Guidance Chips, which are also pretty important to munitions builds.

The brother in law here. Thank you all for the advice.

Thank you for the advice. Brother law out.
