local vs non-local LGS rant.

By Wayne Argabright, in X-Wing

Typically the tourneys are cheaper but I know some in the horseshoe amped up the prices. 401 does a good job on tournaments as they have a ton of space upstairs though regionals was very cramped on the weekend. I ended up dropping due to a combination of heat/ losing/ and odour. Dueling Grounds had the right idea when they rented that hall for their big event.

Do you mean F2F, when they rented the hall for their Store Championship event (for a bunch of the games)?

Or did Dueling Grounds have a big event as well?

I feel bad seeing posts, like the OP, since in Toronto there are so many stores. When I lived in New Jersey it was hard to find stores, here there is an X-wing night every single day of the week.

I also feel bad that I cannot support some stores more, if only I could win a lottery! I was saving some money to buy Imperial Veterans when it comes out, and to buy some cards for a new edition of another miniature game I play, both of which are supposed to release later this week. But since those were on the horizon, I hadn't spent much at a store I started playing at in the northern part of the city. That store closed this weekend, and now I wish I had just gotten a couple of other ships that were lower on my want list, just to have shown support. They charge a bit more than Meeplemart, 401, or HairyT (since they are only B&M) but I got along with them and like the time I have played their over the past two months.

I get Dueling Grounds & F2F mixed up. It's a shame that stores have been close down, Hobby Kingdom was pretty nice. It is really hard to compete though because of the number of shops in Toronto alone.

If you go to the shop today dressed as Princess Peach or Darth Vader you get 15% off.

... Just sayin'.

There's the game store and then there is the game store.

Children playing card games are a significant part of the game store revenue and getting rid of them means you'd better be doing well elsewhere.

Not sure how it is where you live, but just because you serve alcohol doesn't mean you have to be 21 or older, at least not in places like Minnesota. The FFG event center serves both alcohol and food and it's doing quite well.

The point is to draw in people who would like to both play a game and have a beer or glass of wine, not to draw people in for a drink and then decide to play a game.

There is no way in hell I would let someone who is drunk get as close as is required to my delicate plastic I have paid hard earned money for. Cards can be protected fairly well with sleeves and top loaders but mini's no freaking way. Alcohol and delicate models do NOT mix and I work too hard to watch some ****** break my toys, that'll start a fight.

The general consensus across all tabletops is beer + wargaming = no. Too many expensive fragile models that even if you arent a violent drunk you can easily squish or whack.

While i was stationed in South Korea a couple of my friends in the comm squadron played 40k on the pool table in the dayroom. They had an incident with a drunk ******* that walked in and of course that means the commander gets notified. Their commander found out how expensive these models were and immediately went NOPE and gave them a spare room to set up a table in and play there with the stipulation that it remains 100% clean and he'd take it away the moment it fails an inspection. The 8 of us that used it made **** sure that place was clean at all times lol and we took turns stocking the fridge :D . He even popped in a few times interested in what the hell we wanted these expensive models for anyway...nothing more shocking than seeing your CO walk in completely unannounced even off duty lol

If even someone who doesnt wargame is afraid of a drunk breaking expensive models, nobody who does wargame should think beer is a good idea lol

There's a difference between having a beer and getting drunk...

I agree but the number of people who understand the difference is very debatable and I am not rolling the dice on that one.

true, but alot of people like me dont have a tipsy phase. Even if im just drinking 1-2 drinks over a couple hours i dont feel a buzz i just go straight from sober to pretty sloshed if i drank too much/too fast. Done that a few times where im not intending to get drunk and since im such a lightweight i'll still get pretty loopy lol

Yeah I don't really drink but it'd take more than a few bears to impare me, hell I drank a third of a bottle of mead from a drinking horn in one go and barely got tipsy.

Which is odd because you think it'd be the opposite and hit me harder.

Ho many bears exactly would it take to impair you?

some people can just throw them away all day and feel nothing. Me? 3 drinks in an hour lol
