Seeking advice on playing Heroic Effort Rebels

By Polda, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Let me start with this - I play very little skirmish.

I am however trying to prep a fun list for our local Regionals (probably 8 people, nobody really playing the meta) and I really like the idea of all unique rebels.

The problem is I can't decide what way to build them - start with the twins or go all mid-range to low cost units to get as many people in the list as possible?

Does anyone have any advice on playing this, what the tactics should be with units that all have just one fig per activation?

Note: I always play the Imperial side in our campaign, I do not own ANY rebel troopers or sabs and I'm pretty sick of playing the Empire for now ;)

So far I came up with:

Luke
Leia

Davith

MHD-19

Murne
C-3PO

Gideon

Balance of the Force
On a Diplomatic Mission
Heroic Effort

Command:

Son of Skywalker
Comm Disruption
Vanish
Miracle Worker
Heart of Freedom
Rally
Negation

Tough Luck

Take Initiative
Planning

Disorient
Single Purpose
Deflection x2
Slippery Target

OR should I make it a swarm and go with fewer character cards (no Balance of the Force)?

Davith
Diala

Lando
MHD-19
Murne
Loku

Gideon
R2-D2
C-3PO

Heroic Effort

Not sure about command deck for the second list.

Thanks in advance

I've been playing close to the second list. Except I dropped Murne for balance, high command, and diplomatic mission for Gideon. I play all of the named figure command cards and a bunch of the good force user command cards. I don't have a perfect deck for it yet, but the baseline is pretty easy to come up with. Diala is great on this list because you can spend command cards of dead figures to get rid of dice and she generally survives for you to draw past the cards you have Heroic Efforted.

Keeping your top list alive will be tricky if you're not used to it. In some ways it is more simple to play, but the bottom list is probably a better list over all, its just if you're not practiced in playing it, you'll forget half your rules for every individual.

I'd probably swap Loku / R2 / Mak and Balance or Diplomatic mission and I would get Rebel High Command in there as well. You'll want to be able to pull those cards and you may not want to even babysit the terminal

Top list really needs another threat, Murne is not it, so I would find a way to squeeze Lando in

REally there is no wrong way to run it,just a matter of preference and experience/practice.

Well said, buckero0.

Personally, I'd probably be inclined to try this if I wanted a hero-only squad:

10 Luke

8 Leia

6 Davith

6 Lando

5 MHD-19

3 Gideon

2 C3P0

That's 40pts exactly. Lando and Davith are both definitely worth their points (I'm not sure that Murne was). If anyone can drop, I'd probably think it would be MHD-19. That could earn you some points for R2 and Diplomatic Mission and Balance of the Force. Or maybe R2 + Rebel High Command.

But that's just me. I've been wanting to try something like this ever since Davith and Lando were previewed, but I just haven't gotten to it yet. I hope you have good success with whatever you end up using!

Any thoughts on the other campaign heroes in Skirmish? Verena seems... well... poop. Any thoughts on Fenn and Garkhaan.

BTW: Tried Lando for the first time yesterday. Two regular rebel troopers killed him before he shot due to bad rolls and rerolls on my defense. Let's say he did not fill me with confidence :D Sell me on Lando

Fenn is hardly worth his points in a trooper-list. He is definitely not worth his points without any troopers.

Gaarkhan is OK, but doesn't have enough health, especially compared to those Wookie Warriors.

Murne needs to be up close to use her ability, but if she gets to close, she will be killed fast.

I wouldn't use any of those figures.

Lando is well worth his points. There are no synergies, he is just good. I prefer figures with strong synergies. But I have to admit, that many (if not most) of the unique Rebels are NOT worth their points. Therefore, give him another try.

When playing Heroic Effort Rebels, I think these are must-haves:

C-3PO

Gideon + On a Diplomatic Mission
Heroic Effort

Actually, whenever I play Rebels, I always have:

C-3PO

Gideon + On a Diplomatic Mission

Rebel High Command

R2-D2 is good. I just think, that Rebel High Command is better, and I usually don't need both.

I admit - he does have that cool cape going for him.

Definitely want to keep Diala and Davith in.

Diala can use the command cards of dead heroes for her ability and Davith is just so much fun to play.

The guy doesn't deal a ton of damage per roll but can deal it consistently in small amounts over and over again.

If Saska wasn't that expensive (and seemingly useless) I'd try to fit in the boss lizard himself.

At the moment I got as far as this:

Leia
Lando
Diala
Davith
Gideon (+Diplomatic Mission)
C-3PO
Loku Kanoloa
Balance of the Force
On a Diplomatic Mission
Rebel High Command
Heroic Effort

I like Garkhaan in melee list, Iike Verena as well, I'm a little irritated that Verena, who is this delicate spy has 11 health and is the anti-melee unit (take her up against Vader or RGC for fun) is costed at 8 points where Biv, this big, tough heavy laser toting BA Baracus type is costed at 9 pts and 8 health. I think the point costs and health ratios are messed up on that. I think Verena will actually become a better buy with the release of more melee, jedi types getting released. I don't think she belongs in a competetive list right now as there are better options. Garkhaan is great if he's focused and his special ability is sweet. He's kind of a one trick pony, but decent for coming out of the core set as is.

Lando's rerolls and ability to swap out dice for what you need are amazing. I thought because of his cheap cost, he would be a worthwhile point filler, but he has really shined for me. bad dice are bad dice, I do find that the more I play this game, the more of a positional game it is. Like Xwing, the ability to hit your opponent or cause him to over commit or get out of position is the key to winning. Lando is great because he can serve every purpose. You can actually shoot at 5-6 spaces away reliably everytime. You actually don't want to be close. You'll shoot, change yellow for a blue if you need range and then use Luke's ability to reroll the green if you need to. Then duck behind a corner. I've killed Luke 1st turn with 3 shots if my opponent leaves him out in the open early. I've had boba fett killed in one round of shooting as well. The key is getting my shots and then ducking behind something where the opponent can only shoot me once or not at all. Or if he wants to shoot my figure, He's got to over commit and leave his figures out in the open for the rest of my army to slaughter.

Well said! The sections I've bolded are valuable and essential tactics anyway, and are even more important when playing a hero-only squad, which doesn't usually have a lot of figures on the board.
