Attention to detail: Magnetized B-Wing cockpit

By VaeVictis, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

So I have most of my ships magnetized, because they look cooler that way.

But what to do about the B-Wing? Its cockpit is supposed to move with ship as it reorients. It would be unconscionable to just magnet the ship and then have its cockpit not orient correctly.

Enter 1/16th by 1/16th cylinder magnets.

And the end result.

This was actually much easier than I thought it was going to be. The cockpit is actually held on by an internal peg, so cutting it off is a breeze and any imperfection on the internal peg can be filed flat.

After centering the hole on the body, I put a dab of paint on the end of the first magnet so it would mark where the front half needed to be drilled.

Then you just drill until the magnets sit flush, and boom, done.

Next, figuring out how to de-goofy and magnetize a TIE Defender.

If anybody's interested in the rest of my work (mostly True Scale Space Marines and other 40K conversions), or in the narrative Battle Reports from Heroes of the Aturi Cluster , you can check out my blog.

Well done.

Thanks. And for those wondering, it's a pretty strong grip even with such a small magnet. As long as you store them properly, the cockpit is unlikely to get lost.

I did something similar, but I cut both the cockpit and the cone-shape at the rear off, drilled a hole through the collar and remounted them on a shaft so they rotate together.

The real trick would be to weight the cockpit so it rotates on its own when the ship barrel rolls.

This is great! Why do they not just sell B-Wings like this?

Nice work!

I Have to say VaeVictis.

I'm very IMPRESSED with your innovation and excellent work on the B wing.

great idea and very well done.

Superb ! :D

All the Best,

Barry.

A small mod that makes a big difference! Well done!

What size magnets do you use? I'm thinking about doing the same thing to my stands and ships but I want to be sure about the sizes.

Sorry, didn't see this.

I used kjmagnetics for the order, and the products are:

The ball bearings are Product ID NSB3

The ring magnets are Product ID R421

The B-Wing cockpit magnets were D11-N52 (the stronger N52 magnets are probably a good idea for this, and they only 20 cents more for ten)

The NSB3 and the R421, is that what you used to magnetize all your ships to the pegs?

If so, do you have to magnetize the sphere, or does the ring simply grip to it at any orientation?

Have you already started planning how you might do the Protectorate Fighter when it comes out ?

That's a model that could benefit from guys like your self, with the rotating wings.

it would look great to see one of those posed like the way you have done so well with your other models.

All the best,

Barry.

To be honest, I don't like the Rebels show all that much and I don't play Scum, so probably not. I'd be tempted to get one for the "Just so I can" factor though, lol. After all, I have hundreds of dollars in unassembled figures already, what's an extra 10-15 bucks, right?

But, looking at it, I'm guessing you could drill a hole through the wing section, and run a rod/pin through it. Glue the front and back sections on to the ends of the pin in a fixed position and bingo, the wings should rotate around the body. You won't get 360 rotation in practical gameplay because the wings will hit the peg, but you'll get the illusion of full rotation (it's not like you're going to be spinning them around on the tabletop anyway) in any configuration with the exception of a straight up and down orientation. If you glue it tight, friction should do the work for you of holding the wing sections where you want them to as you rotate it.

Otherwise you could use the D11 magnets I used for the B-Wing Cockpit and string three of them together. A little more work since you'd have to align the front and back section every time you moved it.

Stole somebody's handy picture and made this awesome MS Paint diagram.

No need to magnetize the ball. It's just a regular nickel plated ball bearing. The magnet grips to it.
