In Padmé Amidala's voice: "So this is how AEG ends.... with regular IP sales and returns."
Stupid.
And while L5R will most certainly have a revival, the future doesn't look as bright for Doomtown. The guys at Pinnacle are the minds behind Deadlands, Doomtown original IP, but the are known for their RPG systems and settings, not for card games.
Also take into consideration the number of projects they are already have (Deadlands, Rippers, Rifts, Last Parsec, Sixth Gun, Necessary Evil, and many more) and their limited ressources (compared to FFG for example), I doubt we will see any more Doomtown anytime soon.
It says in the article they have no plans to continue the game as is so its dead again.
For sure. Doomtown has it way worse than L5R.
Holy hell.
... So, uh, how 'bout dat Smash-Up?

So... Another IP sold by AEG. I think they are starting to sell IP which needs a storyteam. I wouldn't be surprised to see them selling 7th Sea soon. I know they have an arrangment with John Wick, but I wouldn't be surprise if this happens in less than a year. Unless, due to the fact that the story will be held by someone else, they keep it because it will not cost anything.
I'm kinda glad that FFG was clear on their intention with L5R, except for the RPG...
Looks like they are quite finished with doing anything that requires the maintenance of a community and/or continual play-testing.

They are also the masters of Kickstarter.
The IP was not theirs. It belongs to Pinnacle and they licensed it. I think that when the time came to renew, the looked at the numbers and they just decided it wasn't worth it. As for 7th Sea, they have sold the IP to the original creator John Wick, but they still retain the rights to the card game.

And just when I had declared Sloane my waifu.

And the kickstarter for the 2ed was a tremendous success. The book is already out
Tremendous success is an understatement. It broke the record for the most funded RPG of all time, going for over a million dollar and unlocking some incredible stretch goal, including a demo for a movie pitch.
On the subject of Pinnacle, they posted on the own site about what will happen for Doomtown, and while they stayed vague, it doesn't seem they want to continue the line. At best, I can see them selling the license to other designers (for the card game of course)
I remember hearing last year that AEG was selling L5R in part because they wanted to focus on Doomtown and felt it was a more manageable model. Was I misinformed, or did something change with AEG?
Besides "Love Letter", what's left? Are they going to continue their existence just endlessly slapping new artwork onto the same, single game?
L5R is getting a new version, which is better than extending an old version. So yeah, Doomtown has it worse.

Most game companies -- especially ones as small as AEG -- would kill for one, let alone two, smash hits like Love Letter and Smash Up. So long as those gravy trains are running I wouldn't worry about AEG.
And I don't blame them for cutting their "LCG"s. Playtesting and printing collectable card games is a lot more expensive than just doing another Smash Up expansion, and requires a lot less overhead and personnel costs as well. So not only is Smash Up making more money for them than L5R probably had in a long time, they've got less staff to spend salaries on for the greater income. Pretty much a win/win from the office's perspective.

I have no doubt it was a better economic decision than the alternative, but when I see all this jetsam, I can't help but wonder if everything still on board will wind up as flotsam soon enough.
...of course, I may also be somewhat biased; my opinion of AEG having been rather soured by my attempts to make a purchase from the final L5R "sales", then their continued silence at repeated emails to customer service requesting information.
Doomtown was never a T1 game to begin with and AEG did not work hard enough to update some of the clunky outdated ccg design flaws. I do not think FFG will make this mistake with L5R. Time to stock up on those surgical sponges because L5R is going to be modified like a post-op ladyboy.
