So after playing in a demo of Edge of the Empire on free RPG day, I'm interested in picking this game up for my group. I have a couple of questions of what I might need.

I:My brother wants to play a jedi, I understand that I need Force & Destiny for this to be realized fully. If he is the only player, or everyone wants to be jedi, is this the only book I need?

II:If I'm running for both jedi and non-jedi I'll need both books, Force & Destiny and Edge of the Empire. Is this correct?

I guess I'm trying to sort out what I need and what I don't as picking up both of those books and some dice would be a pretty heafty sum.

The core mechanics are all the same. There is flavor mechanic to the 3 books, Obligation, Duty and Morality that you can mix and match or ignore completely if you like, but combat/skill check mechanics are universal. What books really depends on what people want to play. If someone wants to be a full on Force user then F&D is a good choice. A lot of your other iconic types are in EoE.

It's a big investment but the product is top notch. I would be sure who is playing and what they want to play before you spend too much, so maybe start with F&D.

As Twopee said, the basic rules are the same, no matter what setting you want. Each setting has its own style...Age of Rebellion deals with the rebels, Force and Destiny deals with the surviving jedi, and Edge of the Empire deals with the scoundrels and freebooters of the galaxy. If your brother wants a Jedi campaign, then definitely get F&D. If your campaign is going to be something else, then obviously, you need that particular setting, and your players can buy their own core and source books.

You can play a Force user in EotE, but your abilities would be limited. The Force Sensitive: Exile spec in EotE is more like Ep IV Luke Skywalker.

I - Yes just F&D Core, if he's the only player ask him nicely to compromise and start as a Force Emergent and use Edge Core.. THEN get F&D later on

II - Hefty, 2 core books and 2 sets of dice, one for you and one for the players. Or get a player to buy a set

III - Convince all players to be force sensitive and buy F&D it's amazing so they'l be happy either way!

IV Profit from awesome adventures and stories you can share with friends (but not actually monetarily profit)

I say get the beginners boxes. If you get the one for Edge and the one for F&D that will give you most of the dice you'll need starting out. More will be needed as you go though. Plus they come with a whole host of tokens and maps and all that useful stuff.

If you play Edge and your brother likes it enough, you might can convince him to just be an Edge character and do the force Exile thing. This would mean, you don't need to buy the F&D core rule book. On the other hand, if your other players play F&D beginners box and love it, then maybe you should just run with F&D and ignore Edge. Also, I don't know the ages of your other players, but don't be afraid to ask others to contribute to the gaming group. One person shouldn't have to buy all the materials, unless they just really want to own them all.

A great way for you and your friends to start out might just be the Force and Destiny beginner box. The box comes with a set of dice included so it offsets some of the start up costs of getting into this system. In a previous campaign we ended up starting a year long camp with the Edge of the Empire beginner box and had a blast from there (they created their own characters instead of playing the premade ones).

If you don't start with the beginner box, the book comes with an adventure as the last chapter that usually works as a first or early adventure for you and your party.

Like a lot of others, it really depends on the sort of game your players want to play

if all your other friends want to play a "doing what you have to to survive on the fringes of society" (smugglers, bounty hunters, mercenaries, basically Han and Chewie in episode 4, Lando in episode 5, or boba fett) then that's "Edge of the Empire" and a "Jedi" character might not mesh well with that (i.e. they might rack up a lot of conflict for associating with the ruffians and not stopping them from doing questionable things OR conversely annoy the other players by stopping them from doing questionable things), and then you might want to ask your brother to pay for half the force and destiny book if you're only getting it for him.

I have all the books released so far, and my personal ranking of the cores from most to least favorite are

1) Edge of the Empire

2) Age of Rebellion

3) Force and Destiny

basically I don't want the hassle of handling lightsabers and force powers and the morality system (BTW lightsabers as presented in EotE of AoR are pretty broken, and even the scaled back version of a basic lightsaber found in FaD can cause balance issues). BTW since a large component of my campaign is taking place in the Tapani sector where saber rakes and lightfoils are a thing (look them up on wookieepedia)... I had a large number of saber rakes in one scene and I said that the inferior lightfoils were like a basic lightsaber except that they had pierce 5 rather than breach 1, now my players were smart so that scene didn't devolve into combat but that's the closest I've come to having a "lightsaber" type thing in my game.
