Custom Mage Class: Battlemage

By BJZSN, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hey guys, sorry if I'm going a little overboard with the custom content, just had a wave of inspiration I guess! The Battlemage Edit: Spellblade is a Mage that likes to get close for once. I know this idea has been done before by others but I felt like giving it a shot myself.

Got the class cards here, changed the class name to Spellblade, check em out:

Very nice! Seems pretty balanced. However, I would suggest altering the skill Electric Charge so that it affect X figures instead of monsters. Because when I compare it the Berserkers Whirlwind, this seems stronger. The Battlemage can still choose which figures affect it, but is also serves as some kind of restriction to not go all out on it, unless you are prepared to face the consequences.

Yeah I saw the comparison to Whirlwind when I made this skill and decided to balance it by requiring a surge. Of course that might not be enough to balance it as you've said.

Require? You get a surge if I read correctly. Which is perfectly fine if the nerf I suggested is applied. I was just fearing a situation where the battlemage pumps 4 fatigue in this skills and 1 in mana font so the Battlemage has a guaranteed + 4 damage and sweeps an entire monster group. With the nerf, the Battlemage can still do it, but he/she has to be careful not to hit other heroes or himself. This is not a problem in a situation where the 4 additional targets kill 5 goblin archers, because if the placement is that bad a well-aimed Blast would achieve the same.

Edit: Also, backfiring magic adds some nice theme to the mage using magic for combat.

For Electric Charge, I meant for it to be that you perform a Melee attack and you can spend a surge to gain the effect. You're right about it basically being guaranteed with Mana Font though (even with Mana Font costing Fatigue, it's still a strong combination), so I'll have to find some way to make it work. I like your suggestion though, I mean it is electricity we're talking about here, pretty erratic stuff!

Yes that was my point. Now imagine the horror of 5 stamina Hero + ring of power + radiant enchantment = 7 stamina to pump in this skill. If you have a weapon that fairly certain rolls a surge. That is 7 damage to almost every figure surrounding the target. Also are we talking about the target? or target space? And with Spectral Blade, this suddenly because very scary indeed. Give that Battlemage a treasure seeker or Ulma Brimstone and you never run out of stamina potions.brrr....

Changed Electric Charge to Pierce instead of Damage.

Sorry Ceasersalad101 but this is the change I'm gonna go with. Not that you're suggestion wasn't good, if you wanna use it that way by all means go ahead, it's really thematic with the skill.

Great change!

Changed Mana Font so it requires a Knowledge test.

Makes it so it's not guaranteed, but more than likely with a Mage hero.

Overall, this looks like a very balanced class. It allows a mage to go more close combat and supports that style of play with health-enhancing/ defensive skills. Maybe Dezra will finally see some action!

Got the cards done, renamed it Spellblade, here's the link:

Just so you know, the name on top of the cards says spellsword. Also any idea how to get nice prints out of these? And let's go for that RtL playtest:)

This is what happens when you rush through things, I'll have to fix that when I get home today. I use printerstudio.ca myself but they have an american site at printerstudio.com, I have alternate cards made up for the resolutions required by their template (you'll see what I mean when you check it out) so I'll post a link for those cards later.

Well actually, I live in the Netherlands so I am afraid that it will be hard to find a shop that A) prints american sized cards. B) In the desired quality. C) For a reasonable price. and D) is small samples

What are you using to make the cards? Do you have some templates? I'd be very interested in seeing them, especially if they're of (much) higher resolution than the finished cards.

Working on the remaining Mages now, starting with the Spellblade. A few changes, plus a new skill I'm working on to replace Deft Strike (may tweak the skill itself as well, not sure yet). Any suggestions are appreciated.
