I am buying my first ships this weekend! but which ones?

By NoirRaven, in X-Wing

Hello everyone!

I'm a brand new player. I've played quite a few games at a local club by borrowing ships and i have the Force Awakens starter.

I'm pretty much going to be the definition of "fly casual".

I have decided to go for Imperials because their Maneuverability appeals to me and that has proven to be my favourite part of x-wing in all my games, and oddly the part i am best at.

I am just not sure what my opening purchases should be.

I know what ships i look forward to flying :

TIE Advanced Prototype

TIE Interceptor

TIE Phantom

TIE/sf (though that is a way away)

TIE Punisher (specifically i want to fly Deathrain)

TIE Defender (with the TIE/d title)

I am not sure what to buy though, or what order to buy things in.

The club i've been invited to and have been learning at is fantastic and very open, and it shouldn't be a problem to temporarily borrow upgrades or ships while i get my collection going.

So help me out, What should i grab?

Hey, glad to hear you are fine with Casual X-wing! I highly encourage it.

Well, I've found it's always great to fill up with Tie Fighters. This can be FO or the olde timey ones. Both are great to fill up a list. That can make it more expensive to get to 100 pts. Feel free to get some of the other ships to help fill out your list. Tie Adv. Prototype is great. Tie Advanced is great. Tie Defender is getting a huge fix....this week? Imperial Vets. Tie Interceptors are good, as well. Those ships will get you towards 100 pts.

I'd stay away from the Tie Phantom, at least for a bit. It tends to be a binary ship....your opponent either has the tools to kill it and you lose or they don't and you win. I'm not a fan at all of this ship. I know I'm a minority, but that's just been my experience.

Since you have a core set, the old core may be an option.

Other than that I'd recommend Imperial Aces and Imperial Veterans when it comes out. Although you really need a normal Interceptor pack to get the best pilots.

You should buy TIE Advanced Prototype first, TIE Interceptor, Imperial Aces and Starviper (the last one is necessity!!!). This way you will get essential ships for Imperial player (TIE Advanced Prototype and TIE Interceptor) and essential upgrades for those ships (Autothrusters & Push the Limit). After that you can buy TIE Phantom (but to fly it succesfully you will need Veteran Instincts).

Always start with the tie/FO expansion pack

It comes ready made with omega leader packing juke + comm relay, which is all you'll ever need

Plus the FO has THE sexiest dial in the game

Also, since you have the FO from the core, you can also take Zeta Leader and give him Weapon's Guidance + Wired for a very solid and efficiently priced little bugger

The FO individual expansion should be the first thing any imperial player with the ep 7 core starts with

The final remaining FO from the core can be whatever you like and you'll have room for a potent imperial ace

So yeah, Tie/FO expac first. Everything else is secondary

This is so far from the truth since the errata.

Any how, for first purchases for imperials, to get the ships at least not cards needed, 1 prototype, 1 aces (and the standalone interceptor for Fel at some point), 1 fo, and the Vets box as it should be out by then. That should give you a lot to play with for a time being.

Anything else will be to your flavor of ship, but most of those are the staple ships currently, outside of the trusty tie fighter.

Awesome and welcome! There are, and soon will be more with imp vets, some great ways to quickly get in. I'd recommend:

Imperial Aces box set - gets you Carnor and great title card.

Imperial Veterans box set - awesome new titles which will make the defender even better.

From there a TIE Advanced, Inquisitors TIE, and a Defender individual ship pack and you'll have more than enough ships and options for a 100 point list.

Following up with a TIE FO, and later in the year the FO special forces, will really round you out next.

This is a great site for seeing all the cards you'll get with each:

I'd hold off on the Phantom the Punisher until a later purchase. Good luck!

Recommend Imperial Veterans as soon as it comes out (sometime this week). It'll net you a TIE Defender and a TIE Bomber as well as some good upgrades.

TIE Interceptors really need both the regular expansion and Imperial Aces AND cards from other expansions to be at their best, which means you end up very heavily invested in them, which might not be right for you at this stage in your X-Wing life.

The old core set will give you some very handy extra dice, as well as two TIE Fighters, which act as very good filler in any Imperial list. The TIE Fighter expansion and TIE FO expansion are solid purchases and will complement the new core set you have and old core set you might buy.

TIE Adv. Prototype would be a good buy on its own, although really shines with upgrades from other packs.

I find the TIE Punisher to be very meh. You're probably better off going with an Imperial Veterans TIE Bomber at the moment, as there is a pilot in there who has some funky bomb rules.

You will buy all of them. Maybe not right away, but you will. ... Oh you will. Ha Ha Ha Ha Haaa!

You should buy TIE Advanced Prototype first, TIE Interceptor, Imperial Aces and Starviper (the last one is necessity!!!).

If you are playing in a casual environment, check to see if it's acceptable to just print out a list from a squad builder and proxy upgrade cards that you don't own. Then only buy that ships that you actually want to put on the table and play with.

I love the Starviper but everything on your wishlist is Imperial so I'd avoid buying one, since the only reason you'd be buying it is for the Autothrusters upgrade card. Wait until you decide that you want to play in a tournament or somewhere that doesn't permit proxying before picking up expansion that you are only buying for the cards..

Starter box. Force awakens. Tie fo x2. And an extra set of dice.

TIE FO expansion pack / Imperial Aces (you get 2 interceptors) / TIE Adv. Prototype

If you want Autothrusters and not have to proxy it, buy a Starviper

Welcome Friend, I would tell you to purchase

Force Awakens Starter

EXTRA DICE.

Imp Vets

You should buy TIE Advanced Prototype first, TIE Interceptor, Imperial Aces and Starviper (the last one is necessity!!!).

Autothrusters can be bought on eBay, usually two for the price of a StarViper expansion because they're that essential to any faction. As others have mentioned, extra dice are a must. Imperial Vets also looks like a strong buy for your faction of choice.

I'd go with:

Original Core Set

TIE fo expansion

TIE Fighter expansion

Imperial Aces

TIE Interceptor expansion

Imperial Veterans

TIE Defender expansion

TIE Bomber expansion

TIE Advanced expansion

And I'd buy them in that order as well. Original core plus the two TIE fighter variant expansions gives you a lot of options with a mixed/modified TIE swarm. After that, Imp Aces and TIE interceptor gives you most of what you'll need to fly interceptors effectively (a few more upgrades would be very good but you'd need to buy expansions from other factions). Then Imp Vets plus the defender and bomber expacs gives you pretty much everything you need for those two ships. And lastly, TIE advanced because Vader. And I guess TIE advanced proto if you want the Inquisitor.

You should buy TIE Advanced Prototype first, TIE Interceptor, Imperial Aces and Starviper (the last one is necessity!!!).

so...buy the starviper apparently because it comes with two anyway

Best advice for a casual player:

Buy the ships that you're drawn too. Don't worry about how "effective" it is or what upgrades it comes with. Ask yourself, what miniatures put a smile on your face and you want to push around and "pew pew" with.

eh, depends on the ship

sure, we're not worried about competitive performance, but if you're looking to dance around the table and you purchase a lowly Tie Fighter, it won't be the best fit

that's what the FO is for

hell, there are some options you might not even think to look at because they just don't advertise their capabilities AT ALL

for example, the Tie Punisher is home to perhaps the flightiest arc-dodger in the game

yes you heard me right

Then, buy either two of your favorite small ships, or one of your favorite large ships. Make it the center piece of your squadron and you've got a nice starter collection.

Hey, glad to hear you are fine with Casual X-wing! I highly encourage it.

For the OP, I'd recommend getting The Tie FO expansion pack first. It would then give you a total of three FO's including the one's in you core set. Also what's great about the pack is Omega Leader comes in it and has all the upgrades you need for him right then. So you don't gotta buy other expansions for him. I know you're gonna be playing casual but he's still a super fun ship to fly. Inquisitor is fun too, pretty much just go out and buy anything you think you'd have fun flying.

Welcome to this wonderful addiction....

Assuming you really mean that you want to 'fly casual' and that the good folks you play with will be fine with still lending you stuff and maybe allowing you to proxy upgrade cards then simply buy what you want to fly. You have the FA starter already so looking at your list of likes from earlier I'd probably put them in this order

  1. TIE Interceptor
  2. TIE Advanced Prototype
  3. TIE Defender (with the TIE/d title)
  4. TIE Phantom
  5. TIE Punisher (specifically i want to fly Deathrain)
  6. TIE/sf (though that is a way away)

However like others have said Imperial Aces really helps you to fly interceptors and Imperial Vets will be well worth it also. So I'd replace the Interceptor and Defender on that list with those boxes if you can afford to. You may still get the individual ships for pilots later on but at the moment it's the models you need not the cards. The TIE/fo is a great little expansion because although it's not a 'new' ship to you you do get the full Omega Leader set up all in one place. I only didn't add it because like as say at the moment it's the ship models and you have two TIE/fo already.

Take a look at my order of things and you will no doubt disagree and want to move things about in the sequence. That more than anything will really tell you what you want to buy. :)

When it comes to actually having all the real cards you need for a pilot I think the only one to be super careful of is Vader in his TIE Advanced. The necessary upgrades for that come in an expensive expansion where if you don't play epic most of the money is just wasted!

Just know that eventually you will have multiples of everything, it happens.

Tie Phantom is like your enemy dude. Since the errata it isn't nearly as good and very beatable. And yes I've heard your arguments on the podcast for being against it haha.

We haaatessss it......we do. Hatesssss it, my precious.....

I often recommend to new Imperial players that the first expansion they buy (after TFA Core) is the TIE FO. Great pilots, upgrades, and they are so much fun to fly!

If you're looking for thematic value.... Vader is just too much fun to pass up.

Also I would tell you Imp Aces are a ton of fun and have a lot of good stuff.

I love the Punisher. Lots of fun, nearly self contained expansion. Imperial Aces is a must. If your local group has been playing for awhile, see if someone there is willing to part with a duplicate copy of the Soontir Fel and Turr Phenir unique pilot cards in exchange for a few bucks. There really isn't anything else in that ship expansion that you really *need* that isn't offered. That being said, if no one wants to sell those dupes on the cheap, I've seen the entire expansion going for as low as $7.99 online.

Phantoms are fun, but you need VI to make it work. Again, see if someone will part with some extra alt-art VI from recent tourney kits for a few bucks if you don't want to buy either the Slave-I or Falcon box.
