Aces of the Empire

By FourDogsInaHorseSuit, in X-Wing

So I've started a campaign using x wing for my friends where they started as Academy Pilots and have been working their way up through the ranks.

To start I gave each of them a copy of Crack Shot and a tie fighter and told them to inspect (ie; take an action while within range 1) a series of freighters that would be traveling through the area. In this tutorial mission, no enemy fighters apeared but a firespray and a contracted scout tried to run the blockade.

Much like the old tie fighter games, I had them try to capture any ships carrying illicit cargo, and when the ion equipped tie defender went home, their orders switched to "oh well, blow them up then."

edit: I hit post too soon: I've been giving them some interceptors in reserves, two in the first mission which was about inspection and four in the next mission where the rebels tried to blow up their customs checkpoint (a refurbished ds9 from attack wing) and they encountered their first boss: Ten Numb, equipped with an autoblaster, advanced sensors, and a promo do they know he's an ace, as he has a picture.

Look up Heroes of the Aturi Cluster...its a co-op campaign that puts Rebels against Imperials (now you can only play as Rebels right now).

It is free and you can easily download the ip file on the web if you do a easy google search for it.

But there are several of us on a couple threads (Villains of the Aturi cluster, being one) where we are designing a campaign for Imperial pilots.

Sounds like fun - how do the pilots advance their standing?

1 squad point when an attack hits, +1 point if the attack kills, +1 if the victum was not just a tie fighter, and 1 squad point to everyone if it was a large base or an elite pilot

Each rank of PS costs squad points of the new PSx2, and each PS unlocks either an EPT/pilot ability slot (odd ranks) or modification (even ranks)

Im having them track kills, dead wingman, and aced shot down. This earns them xp which they spend on upgrades which travel with them from ship to ship. Each upgrade costs a number of xp equal to its squad point cost plus one for each previous upgrade of that type.

I'll second the recommendation for 'Heroes Of The Aturi Cluster'. It's a slick, polished piece of fan-made content. It's well worth a look, even if only to steal the missions for your own use.

Also, on an unrelated note, your forum handle is awesome.

[HotAC] has a different feel though, and is for experienced players. This isn't.

Heroes of the Aturi Cluster doesnt have to be for experienced players. We recently have been running it with about 8 people, and 4 have either just started Xwing (as in no games at all), or have only played one or two games of regular Xwing before.

I also used the Aturi campaign as an introduction to people that didnt want to pay Xwing just due to 100 point one on one matches, since they prefer co-op games more.
