First take on Brobots

By Redavhtrad, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Alright so I know I'm more than a little late to the brobot party, but I always try to avoid the "flavor of the month" squads, and this is the first time since I started playing x-wing that brobots weren't dominating the top 8 of every tournament, and so it is now my time to unleash my IGs.

One of my favorite cards has always been lone wolf. It gives offensive and defensive modifications for a mere 2 points. If I have been missing something then please tell me why I've never seen it in a brobot list, otherwise, this card will be what makes this list my own. I understand that it will have to fly very differently from typical brobots, but that is the sort of challenge that makes this game interesting to me.

anyway, here's my list with reasons behind card choices. let me know what you think

IG88-B

Wired - 1 (maneuverability and dice modifications are both very important to me. this EPT pack a lot of punch for its one point. it makes my turns when i have to k turn or sloop that much stronger, laughs at the rogue stress list, and gives me the much coveted defensive modifications)

Advanced Sensors - 3 (i wasn't sure if i wanted to run an AS/Mangler build or a HLC/FCS build. I feel like advanced sensors has a lower ceiling than HLC builds but has a lot more survivability and consistency than its more offensive minded counterpart. I don't like being naked after turning around)

Mangler Cannon - 4 (self explanatory)

Proximity Mines - 3 (I had extra points and AS allows for very consistent proximity mines. who doesn't like bypassing greens?)

Glitterstim - 2 (okay...let's be real...what droid hasn't dreamed of doping up on some gnarly glitterstims?)

Autothrusters - 2 (because vroom vroom fast fast)

Title (I'm famous)

IG88-C

Lone Wolf - 2 (it was hard to decide which ship i'd rather outfit with lone wolf. In the end I decided on C. lone wolf gives a little extra offensive punch if he's the last droid standing, and i value action economy over extra shots.)

Advanced Sensors - 3

Mangler Cannon - 4 (I seriously considered dropping bombs and the glitterstim to upgrade to HLC on both ships. There's a lot to be said for a fourth attack die. who knows, I may go back and test HLC and like it more, but for now i'll keep my range 1 reshot and options)

Seismic Charge - 2 (if i had another point i'd go for another proximity mine, but i couldn't find it and so i'll take this guaranteed damage over a second glitterstim.)

Autothrusters - 2

Let me know what you think. I know everyone on this forum has more experience with brobots than myself, and i'm very open to insight. My friend plays mindlink bros and they're pretty cool, so I wanted my own unique brobot build. If you have any crazy, non-meta ideas, I would absolutely love to hear them. any time i can take under used cards to the table and win with them i walk away happy.

I personally would get rid of the mines/charges and add predator to both bots. its indepent of range ruling, can still re-roll ANY die instead of just a blank AND has the potential to reroll 2! add FCS to that and you are ensuring damage. with only two ships, one of them NEEDS HLC+FCS because you have to output the damage. one bot strips shields (HLC). Mangler makes them turn cards face up. I'm fairly new to brobots myself, have fun!

I agree with some of your ideas here, but some of it is off-base.

Predator IS a strong card, but the current meta is PS3+ more often than not. You just don't see as much PS 1 or 2 as before, and as such, predator is not as likely to offer the 2 re-rolls per shot (compared to previous metas).

Also, never put FCS and predator together. While its true that FCS doesn't provide re-rolls all the time, combined with the gunner-like ability of IG88B, it makes predator redundant. Personally, I've never been a fan of FCS on IG88s. Sure it gives them solid offense, but they need defensive tokens to survive attrition battles, because they are not arc-dodgers. FCS simply does not allow them to survive against their toughest matchups (higher PS ships, especially arc-dodgers). Also, FCS leaves them vulnerable to swarms, particularly crack shot swarms since its so easy to block a large base and tear up an IG88 at range 1. For those reasons, I've always considered FCS a poor choice for IG, simply because advanced sensors turns the swarm match from a very uphill battle into an easy win (provided you don't screw up). Advanced sensors also gives you a fighting chance against higher PS aces by opening up your block options a bit.

HLC. Yes. I second the suggestion to include an HLC. Especially on IG88C. If you run a pair of IG88s and you put manglers on both, you will lose games for lack of damage output. Ideally, its nice to have 2 HLCs, but you can get by with one (on the non-IG88B).

So in the current meta that is saturated with Torpedo Scouts, Imperial Aces (with or without Palpatine) and crack swarms, the IG list that gives you the best chances for success is:

IG88B w/ PTL, advanced sensors, title, autothrusters & mangler = 48

IG88C w/ PTL, advanced sensors, title, autothrusters & HLC = 51

99

The one point bid is to give you a better fight against other IG88s, but frankly, since that is such a rare occurrence these days, you can throw inertial dampeners onto IG88B for an even 100.

PTL + advanced sensors is not easy to use! A simpler version of this list is to use predator instead of PTL, and if you are new to IG88s, I would suggest going with predator first. Making the switch to Push the Limit takes quite a bit of adjustment, because most players over-use PTL and leave their IGs stressed. IGs HATE stress. They thrive on an open dial, able to catch the opponent offguard. Once stressed, they are extremely predictable and tend to get into big trouble. So, only use Push the Limit with advanced sensors before revealing a green move. If you dial in a white move, don't use push the limit unless that extra token is the difference between life and death for your IG.

Also, don't be afraid to run away. IGs LOVE range 3 and HATE range 1. Even the 'mangler' IGB prefers to stay out of range 1 because that's where most enemies punch through your defenses.

When in doubt, take an evade token (you can get it through IGC's ability too, which is often a good idea, especially when using one IG as a blocker). If you are thinking purely about dealing damage though, you will lose the battle of attrition. I find IGs do better when you keep the long game always in mind. IGs are very powerful when you have both on the board, but as soon as you lose one, most matchups go from easy to very hard. Always pick moves with a thought to keeping your IGs alive as long as possible. Damage can be an issue, but I find patience pays dividends and you will get the damage you need eventually.

Anyway, that's my playstyle---not everyone flies their IGs that ways, and its not wrong to go more aggressive, but I find that playstyle has more bad matchups then the cautious approach.

Hope that helps!

its true! everyone has their own style when it comes to the exact same build...or religion, or political party etc lol. For me, i like the redundancy because it ensures that when i attack my opponent Will take damage. the reason I prefer predator is not so much for the 2 die re-roll, so much as, for 1 extra point i can re roll ANY 1 die (not just blanks like lone wolf) guaranteed and is not based on how close i am to friendlies (like lone wolf). if i happen to role an additional die then im not complaining. also, none of these are based off actions so i can still boost then get evade or if need to just straight up take the evade action. so its not as tanky as other builds. that being said, when i play brobots, I am very aggressive, at range 3 lol.

Either way, most bro bots list are still viable, build to your play style! practice, practice, practice!

My favorite ship is the IG-2000 so I like the Brobot lists. I haven't been able to build a solid one yet merely because I don't have a ton of expansions yet but I'm looking to eventually build this one that I read on this forum a couple weeks ago:

IG-2000 - IG-88B

  • IG-2000 (Title)
  • Mangler Cannon
  • Ion Cannon
  • Autothrusters
  • Outmanuever
  • FIre Control System

IG-2000 - IG-88C

  • Same Stuff
