Got a VT-49 Decimator for Father's Day - advice for newbie

By Redsamurai, in X-Wing

Hi guys,

I've got a VT-49 Decimator for Father's Day - know it's not in the-current meta but would love any

Advice good lists to have fun with.

Thinking along lines of possible like a pap shuttle but with gunner on so if I want to miss with first shot can pap to gain a reroll or possible put Vader on.

Any advice for flying it too greatly relieved

*recieved not relieved

I enjoy Chiraneau with Experimental Interface, Expose, Palp, and Rebel Captive. I usually skirt around the board perimeter utterly crushing my enemies. Usually. I'm also a fan of switching out captive for Jerjerrod.

I find that you need engine upgrade to use his optimally. He has 0 agility so the best way he can survive is to ark dodge. He also sleeps with Whisper.

Play around this build for a while:

• “Whisper” TIE Phantom
Fire-Control System
Veteran Instincts
Advanced Cloaking Device

• Rear Admiral Chiraneau VT-49 Decimator
Adaptability
Gunner
Darth Vader
Moff Jerjerrod
Engine Upgrade

Remember to ditch Vader off the airlock with Moff when he becomes a burden. :P

Most of the time your action will be boosting out of arcs or into range 1-2 if you cant avoid being hit.

He usually dies in the end but not before he delivers maximum punishment.

I like Oicunn with dauntless, expose and experimental interface. Get up close, ram people and then hit someone else with 4 or 5 dice.

I also like Kenkirk with Ysanne.

I've had excellent luck with:

DecEcho (100)

Rear Admiral Chiraneau — VT-49 Decimator 46

Predator 3

Gunner 5

Engine Upgrade 4

Ship Total: 58

"Echo" — TIE Phantom 30

Veteran Instincts 1

Fire-Control System 2

Gunner 5

Advanced Cloaking Device 4

Ship Total: 42

All about offence really... Basically an Ace hunter build and Echo takes a bit of getting used to, but is REALLY maneuverable to fly around the big fast VT-49...

Not exactly a new build, most folks use Whisper though, but a fairly simple and fun one...

Throw crew on it, and a good EPT, and you're set.

Decimators pretty much fly themselves. Solid ship, although a bit simple to fly, making them tough to fly a lot.

I am really a fan of Oicunn, he is so fun to fly, like you have no idea.... I especially like him with ruthlessness and the Vader crew. The thing can deal a ton of damage and still miss every shot, it is pretty funny. And the pilot skill is really somewhat low too, which means you can block with him or ensure a ram on a yet unmoved high PS fighter.

In general, the decimator seems to love to be in the middle of a fight, any cards that do any area stuff like Mara Jade are great choices... try building a decimator for pure damage or try damage mitigation, things like Kenkirk and Isard with determination can last longer than you'd expect. Engine upgrade is also worth a try, the ship can move faster than you'd expect, especially with that on it.

I like RAC with EU and Predator. Add to n gunner for some boostin' abusin' hard hittin' gunship action.

i love the decimator. Its got some major flaws in competitive play but its glorious in fun games.

Try running it with Expert Handling. It will throw so many people off its hilarious. Ive won games with that purely because they keep forgetting that it can barrelroll and they'll bump into me repeatedly lol

Vader is fun on it.

I hate flying against Palp aces so I took a Deci-Vader with Whisper to regionals in Colorado. I made top 4 and put Whisper on a rock to lose in the semis.

Kallus (I didn't like Kallus and would switch this out. I think he works well in a Palp build but not this one, at least I don't like him, I'd take the 2pt bid)

It's really fun to fly. Several times I would go full speed across the board with EU and get an interceptor in range. Fire (miss), Vader, Gunner, Fire (miss), Vader, if you get decent crits you have a good chance of taking someone like Soontir off the board without hitting him.

Somehow throughout the day I never saw triple u-boats, but I don't think that is a good matchup.

Current favorite build is Oicunn with Mara Jade Vader Gunner and predator, crack shot or determination as the EPt.

One of my favorite games in x-wing is Flip This Ship.

I like this list except for the gunner. Prefer Isard and a 1 point bid. I know a lot of people just love it, but gunner isn't worth it on a decimator for me, especially RAC, with his R1-R2 focus mod. I use him as a scary crew carrier that runs around the perimeter, and fly him with an equally scary but fragile wingmate. RAC + Deathrain or RAC + Whisper are my current favorites.

Edit - on the above list, I forgot to mention that it might be worth taking Tactician on Whisper. So many of her shots are at R2, and always in arc, if she's shooting first, dishing out that stress is lovely. And it works on lists that have several ships, unlike Kalus that is dead weight after his target is gone.

Oicunn all day every day.

Expert Handling on a Decimator is good, people do not expect a large ship to barrel roll :)

Which helps significantly in its mobility.

Problem I am personally having is the 0 agility.

TL;DR at the bottom.

When I first flew my decimator, I flew kenkirk. That evolved into:

Kenkirk

-ysanne isard

-rebel captive

-moff jerjerrod

-engine upgrade

-veteran instincts

Ps 8 with engine upgrade at the time avoided alot of the generics firing arcs. Ysanne has fairly obvious synergy with kenkirk, but my favorite part of this was when I would take a crit throwing a rebel captive out of the air lock. A little sadistic maybe but dangit if it didnt feel Imperial.

My current favorite decimator is simple. The patrol leader. Patrol leader with vader specifically. Gunner if you have the points but otherwise just vader. 43 points of make soontir fel (and soon fenn rau) cry. For an example list to fly with:

The Inquisitor (31)

-autothrusters

-tie/v1

-push the limit

Omega Leader (26)

-juke

-comm relay

Patrol Leader (43)

-Darth Vader

100 points, so no bid, but two ps8 wingmen and the decivader cares not for your pilot skill; if you have hull it will burn. It also means if you come against heavy ordinance that the decimator going down doesn't mean the loss of your back bone in that situation.

TL;DR: I really like the decimator. Newbie friendly is kenkirk. Otherwise either cheap with vader or fat turret.

I've considered tactician. I've also thought about Intel Agent. I play the Decimator pretty aggressively so I don't know if the extra evade is going to be worth it. I usually run in and use Vader a lot at the start. Having gunner lets me do that twice as fast. I figure if you can take an ace or two off the board in the first 2-3 rounds it saves more damage than any other crew member adds. If it's Whisper against just about other ship with a lower PS I feel pretty confident (as long as you don't land on a rock). The other bonus of gunner is when you are going against a list without the low health aces it's a good crew member. Although in that case I would prefer a more defensive build, I just have too much fun killing aces with Vader.

I played against somebody with Ysanne, PTL, and Engine Upgrade. Once Ysanne starts activating, you can trigger PTL off of the free evade action and use it to perform a boost at the start of the combat phase.

I will say it's not a good feeling getting arc-dodged by a decimator.

yeaaa it sux and if they have Mara on their and boost into range 1 of your aces that can get annoying as well

Quite the contrary!

Double Deci is viable as ever!

Stress-Oicunn and DOOM SHUTTLE work PERFECTLY, bumping and burning palp-aces to bloody munch, and troll-tastingly stressing UUU to hell with mara Jade and RebCaptive.

There's a variety of options to fly it, it's all about what you want to do with it and who you're flying with it.

Want a surprisingly nimble 300lb ballerina? Cherneau and engine upgrade has you moving later and can chase Han in the Kessel run. Predator on a 3 dice pwt is a winner here.

Want a bull in a china shop? Oicunn and anti pursuit lasers or ion projector has you bumping first and making your enemy pay when they find the fattie where they wanted to be. Dauntless title is much welcomed on this one.

Want a chunky monkey that can make all that hull last a little longer? Kenkirk and Yssane keeps you going, even makes for a sexy (and expensive) palp carrier.

The rest is details, mix crew as you'd like, but remember what you're using it for and adjust accordingly (ie, you don't want engine upgrades on oicunn, because you're bumping and it's a little silly to waste 4pts)

I played RAC for a good deal of time, but I found I always was in the heat of the firefight (thanks to my decidedly mediocre piloting skill), so I'm switching to oicunn to play to my weakness. Heck, I even commited to paiting my decimatior like a pig (Oinkin')
