Dengar/manaroo

By blairbunke, in X-Wing

I'm very late to this party, and only just got my second Jumpmaster yesterday. Dengaroo was the draw for me straight out of the box, but my only fiddling with a Jumpmaster previously was a Manaroo Attani Mindlink build, for all that sweet focus token amplifier action.

So naturally, not being familiar in the slightest with all the Dengaroo build theorizing in this thread, I assumed a standard build had the two of them Mindlinked. I had Outlaw Tech on Dengar and and Overclocked on Manaroo, so I was dependent on green maneuvers to clear stress (without the benefit of any Unhinged in my list), and as a result Manaroo melted quick. It was not a well considered build in the slightest, thrown together in a rush, with Proton Torps, EM and GC serving as unnecessary bloat since I wasn't sure what else to do with available points.

I was a bit surprised to find this thread afterwards and see that Attani Mindlink is nowhere to be found in the list suggestions.

Has anyone come up with a good Mindlinked Dengaroo list? Or is there some obvious deficiency with that starting point I just haven't recognized yet?

Opportunity cost. Lone Wolf is better than the Mindlink focus -- free rerolls on top of an existing focus are better than double focus. Plus, Manaroo loses PtL, which really impedes her ability to run away if the opponent goes after her instead of Dengar.

Had an incredible regionals with my own version of Dengaroo:

Dengar - Mindlink, Zuckuss (yep), R4 Agromech, P1, Counter Measures

Manaroo - Mindlink, Unhinged, Feedback, Int. Agent

Kaa'to Leeachos - Mindlink

That Z95 became the focus battery, charging everyone up most of the time when Manaroo was used as blocker with Barrel roll or just ramming another ship, Dengar was slightly less powerful on his own but no one shot at him anyway most of the time~ They didn't want to!

Managed 5-1, playing terribly against the one that beat me in round 3, making grave mistakes in the 6th game but winning it anyway (double IGs, forgot to feedback once, forgot to attack with Dengar once) and getting to Top 8, winning it and then losing to the same guy I had lost to - ending my rank at Swiss - 4th and Top 4 in the elimination rounds - at that point I was so out of focus, I did terrible once more against the one that ended up winning the Regionals.

I really need to be better prepared for such long events, on top of the 3 hrs drive to get there~ x;

Anyway, my version works and its a lotta fun as well.

How did that work?

If you used Zuckuss to make your opponent reroll two dice or more you'd be stuck with all your ships with multiple stress

If you used Zuckuss to make your opponent reroll two dice or more you'd be stuck with all your ships with multiple stress

You only get a stress token if you don't already have one. So the other ships would just get 1 stress maximum.

Wording on Mindlink:

"Each time you are assigned a focus or stress token, each other friendly ship with Attanni Mindlink must also be assigned the same type of token if it does not already have one."

Does kaatos pilot ability ever come into play? I don't see how that would be useful?

Cheap way to get another mindlink in there without sacrificing more than I already did?

His ability was there to stack focus for defense or have one for attack, one for defense. It was mainly unnecessary in games he had to play battery.

Anyway, in games I didn't need Zuckuss much, 3 Focus on Dengar is pretty sweet.

I faced 2 Overclocked Scouts + Zuckuss which was my closest non-loss, winning due to Kaa'to killing off the last scout and surviving with full shields (: Those torpedoes are still extremely dangerous if you only have 2 JM5Ks~ Glad I had my lil Z there.

Next I faced the undefeated Palp Aces (Palp Shuttle, OL, Inq., Wampa) in which he played superb and I only barely killed the shuttle and that was that. It was pretty silly how I couldn't get a kill and could only spread damage around - they move too fast for me x; I got shields off Inquisitor, then he ran away, did 1 shield on Omega leader then he ran away, etc. All the while coming back in range 3 with Inq. to slowly grind down my shields and then hulls. I felt powerless~ I know he almost lost to 'standard' Dengaroo list, but he still pulled off a clutch win with only the shuttle remaining against Dengar... >_> So when his greens fail him completely he still comes out of it a winner! Props to him~

After that I was... matched up against Whisper + Decimator.... Dengar took 2 shields off Whisper, Manaroo Feedback'd twice and then the Decimator was up against my 3 ships.. not much else to say about that. Whisper didn't play careful and paid dearly for it.

Next I faced an odd but interesting Wes (Expose, Exp Interfaced, BB8), Keyan (Opportunist, FCS), Biggs (R4D6, Int. Astro) where, of course, it is clear that Int. Astromech should always be the only Modification on an Xwing.

Managed to trick the Rebel player and ram my Dengar into his Biggs, having Wes (exposed used) and Keyan (about to be Stressed) shooting 10 dice into Dengar.. not good! Pop Counter Measures, remove Wes' TL... But Dengar deals Hit, Hit, Hit, Crit on a 1 evade Wes.. which Zuckuss made him fail I think and the crit of course had to be Direct Hit. So Keyan only shot 4 dice at me doing no damage, then I cleaned the rest of the list.

Last round I faced a tough opponent with Dual IGs that have Ion cannons, one tractor beam, ion bombs on each, one with dampener, both with predator and adv. sensors, excellent player. I goofed up twice in the game (Let him go at PS6 before firing with Dengar, completely my error, we play each other regularly at tournaments, you don't do such mistakes haha! and 2nd mistake was firing 2 dice out of arc with manaroo instead of Feedback (had the -1 red dice crit and was at range 1.. lol )) but still they are fairly predictable so I pulled some fairly awesome moves - also my Dengar was unstressed most of the time so he did 2 K4s during the game to surprise the IG's Sloop and have my arc at them.. His green weren't hot of course but I had my front arc most of the time against them..

Top 8 after 6 games (first one was the free Bye) I faced 2 Bombers with LRS (!!!!) escorting an X7 Vessery with VI and a standard Carnor Jax (PTL, AT, Stealth), once again here after losing shields and going down to hulls on both my JM5Ks I finally managed to trap both Vessery AND Carnor Jax into a bump from a smart maneuver with Manaroo and Dengar took a R1 shot at an untokened Carnor, erasing him on the spot and then cleaned up the rest.

Top 4 I was so mentally exhausted I was doing basic mistakes, falling for obvious blocks, and even forgetting basic rules like calling out which ship im locking - I was just too tired at that point and felt that even though I played better than when we first faced off in the morning, I didn't give him the best game I could've given him. The same thing happened, shields down on Inq. and I missed my only opportunity to follow suit and tried to do something else that failed quite well. Then I took shots with 4 hits doing 0 damage because 3 greens + evade token + palp and he just evaded everything~

So play the list and the ships well and you can do some insane unpredictable things (especially with Manaroo having the freedom to just barrel roll, taking no focus or TL actions) that really open your options - but you gotta manage your stress extremely well and must decide when its time to break the point of no return with too many stress on Dengar from Zuckuss.

Next time I'll try to be better prepared (in body and mind) for such a long event. I really wasn't at the top of my game and still placed nicely, so I definitely had a shot at 1st place. Next time!

If Kaatos steals a focus token, he acquires one which means the ship he stole from gets it back. I don't think his ability is crucial to the build, he's just the cheapest EPT ship for Scum. Since you have 3 Mindlink ships, you're free to fly recklessly with the other two and they'll still get a focus. Especially since Demgar will have multiple stress from Zuckuss, Manaroo won't always be able to focus.

I imagine that you could just never engage with the Z-95. If they never kill it, it's feeding focus to what actually counts. If they chase it, they'll have to go out of their way to do so and you can potentially punish them for it.

You almost want to get gonk on Manaroo so you can feedback and then immediately regen. With the recent FAQ reversal allowing both Gonk actions, you might want to swap countermeasures for Experimental Interface.

Very cool topic here, thanks for sharing
