Storage/Transport for Cards Tokens & Gauges

By Farseerixirvost, in X-Wing

Need recommendations for a good solution to storing and transporting all the X Wing cards (pilot, upgrade, damage deck), tokens, and rulers/gauges. I've got ships sorted, but the ever expanding cards situation continues to outgrow its home, not to mention has a lack of sorting so takes a while to find "Specific Card X."

FWIW, I currently use a Battlefoam tray that has specific compartments for the various sized cards, but I have to use a different tray for dials and tokens. Plus all my cards don't fit in their compartments anymore as the compartments are now literally overflowing with cards.

When I first started I used baseball card pages and put them in a binder for pilot cards and then got some business card holder pages for the upgrades cards. Works great. You can always add more pages too so that's no problem.

I use a pair of small plastic craft boxes for my tokens and upgrade cards. The pilot cards I keep in the plastic bags that come with ship cardboard punchouts, in the starter set boxes (I have one per faction, since I have 2 Original Cores and 1 New Core). I recently expanded my ship storage, so now both dials and tiles get to sit near their respective ships.

As for sorting, I do upgrades like so: Alphabetical by type (Astromech, Crew, Elite Talent, Illicit, and so on), followed by ascending point cost (0, 1, 2, 3, and so on), followed by alphabetical by name (Outmaneuver, Predator, Push the Limit, and so on). For pilot cards, I alphabetize by ship name (TIE Advanced, TIE Bomber, TIE Defender, TIE Fighter, TIE Interceptor, TIE Phantom, TIE Punisher, TIE/fo, etc.), followed by ascending pilot skill (Academy, Obsidian, and so on), and finally alphabetical by pilot name (mostly for the TIE pilots, since that's pretty much the only ship with a lot of same-PS overlap).

I'm running low on slots in my token/upgrade boxes, though. It won't be long before I have to expand or replace what I've got now. Maybe something like one of these:

Well, storing pilot cards is pretty easy: I liberated a spare deckbox that was holding magic the gathering cards. It holds (currently) all of my pilot cards and reference cards (minus duplicates of unique pilots of course).

Ships follow my own idiosyncratic system of organisation; ascending order of light to heavy ships, then by ascending pilot skill.

The deckbox is currently pretty close to capacity, but it would be a very simple matter to split it off into a second deckbox if it ever becomes necessary.

The upgrade cards live in an index card box - sorted by type, and then roughly sorted by ascending cost / frequency of usage within each upgrade type.

Dials also live in deckboxes (sort of): I have a couple of boxes that contained packs of card sleeves. They're just the right size for keeping the dials in. (although my dials have zero organisation; I kinda have to tip them out and rummage through for the ones I want.)

I keep all the tokens and miscellaneous stuff in one of these plastic boxes with all the different compartments in (everyone seems to have one). Although I have yet to figure out a satisfactory storage solution for the movement templates & range ruler.

Although it should be noted that if I'm going somewhere and I know I'll be using a specific squad, then I'll split off all the dials, tokens, and cards for that squad and put them in with the ships for transport. (saves me lugging all my stuff everywhere).

Thanks for the suggestions! It just occurred to me that we have a The Container Store here in town. May have to check them out for more options.

Ziplock.

I have a three inch binder I use for all the pilot cards, upgrade cards, ship tokens, mission objectives, rules and reference sheets

I put the core rulebook on the cover's pocket.

For pilot cards, I used standard trading card binder pages. For the upgrades, both bcw and ultrapro make 16 pocket pages. BCW came out first so most of my pages are them, but I like the ultrapro better because they handle sleeved cards better.

For ship tokens I have some 2x2 coin pages that hold 20 tokens each. I might be phasing them out with some coin capsule pages because I think they're more ridged and the coin pages have not been holding as tight as I'd like.

Manuvers references (the charts that come with each ship) I've been folding into normal tcg pages.

Large ship tokens go into these four pocket pages designed for oversized magic cards.

Scenarios given out for missions in large expansions each get their own single pocket page.

All my other tokens and templates have their own space in a double sided plano-like tool box with customizable sized compartments.

Each ship has a spot in a battlefoam tray, manuvers dials too but those are just stacked in a long row carved into the tray. Extra ships stay in the plastic that they came with until they hit critical mass for another battlefoam tray.

Wanhao Duplicator i3 Printer.... a few hundred bucks and you can print whatever storage you need.

I've been using the prize boxes they gave out in the early years. I've got an Imperial one, a Rebel one, and a Scum one (from the card game). I'm starting to run out of room. The worst is my upgrade cards. It's just gotten out of control.

I'm actually tempted to get a binder. I HATE binders, but I need a quick way to find everything. The only problem is....I have A LOT of cards. How many binders and sleeves will it take to fill mine all up? 16 per page? I mean, I've got over 50 ships. It almost seems like I'm going to need a backpack just to carry around the flippin' binders in. Not to mention the cost of them. Yeeesh.

Maybe I do get another Plano tray and put the upgrade cards in that? I can spread them out and find the different kind a lot easier. Then, where do I store the Plano tray? Ugh...I think it's probably time to get a cheap duffel bag.

If it helps i've been using pro binders for everything with 2 upgrade cards per slot

it was ok early on but now i have 1 binder for each faction for Pilots and 3 Binders for Upgrade Cards

6 Binders oh and +1 for Rules FAQ etc

that's why i now use a small case just for what i'm playing and the Cardboard Boxes for Pilots etc from this site are excellent and fit well in the case

http://www.sirwillibald.com/

But i'd love to know a better solution for card storage

Wow.....!!!!!! I use his tuck boxes, but I didn't know he made a tray for upgrade cards! This is fantastic and probably exactly what I need. I'll need to get this and figure out how to build it. I have so many EPT's that I think I'll need to categorize them by price point to help me get through the stack quicker.

THANKS SO MUCH! Not sure how I'll be able to transport this, but it's a good option.

EDIT: I think I'll have to find some thick plastic or something to mount this on. Or some foam core. Or.....something. So cool.

Actually, my last name is Chadwick. Everyone online often thinks I'm that one guy that they know with the first name Chadwick. :)

I've got one of the Plano 1374 that holds all my small based ships, tokens, cards, dice, and templates. I've got two of the larger Plano trays that hold all 3 of my Epic ships. I have a third of those large Plano trays that I am waiting to put all my large based ships on. If I can find a duffel bag that can hold all 3 trays, I'll swap to that system. Then, I'll have all my X-wing stuff in 2 things to carry!

My storage consists of a Plano 732 tackle box for all of my ships, tokens, maneuver dials, range rulers, and upgrade cards. Specifically for the tokens I use a small one row plastic arts and crafts storage box. My ships all fit in the three large tackle trays, one tray per faction. The ship ID bases are in one of the smaller side trays. I switched out the other smaller side tray for a deeper tray which now houses all of my maneuver dials. The top of the tackle box contains all of the stuff that won't fit in the trays: range rulers, maneuver templates, my token storage container, my upgrade cards, and all of my extra pilot cards. Specifically for my upgrade cards I bought a Broken Token Mini-American Card Case. The thing is awesome and it fits nicely into the top of my tackle box. The case is made of wood and snaps together. You can use glue to hold the joints in place if you like but I've found the pieces fit snug together and don't need glue. So far it holds all of my upgrade cards, sleeved, with room to spare.

I use a deep plano box (without looking at it, I have no idea of the model... there are so many, but it is the one stocked by Hobby Lobby) for the Upgrade Cards. I am tempted to purchase the Broken Token Mini-American Case, but I am concerned that all my cards will fit with their sleeves on. I've tried the mini zip binder and found them a bit small for sleeved cards and was unhappy with that so am not pursuing a binder option. I tried binders in my Magic days and did not really like them either back then. In the large sections to the side of this box, I have my acrylic asteroids.

For my pilots, I have the colored FFG boxes. Red for Rebels, Black for Empire and Green for Scum and Villainy. I cannot buy any more Empire pilots until I buy another box... and then it will be devoted strictly to TIE Fighter pilots... I have that many and they have soooo many pilots (which is good! don't misread me on that... I love it).

For tokens, I just use another Plano box that is the medium size of the same kind as above... I think it is labeled Creative Solutions or something like that, but it is still made by Plano. They stack, as the outside width and length are the same, just different height.

I use a third deep (large) Plano box for my pilot cardboard squares and maneuver dials.

I only use the foam for my ships (and the one extra tray that still holds all of the pegs and bases... though that may change in the near future) when they are being packed up for traveling. Most of my ships now stay on bases on a top shelf (inset into the wall for additional protection from the wandering ravagers... my two almost 1-year old cats).

In a couple of weeks I will go to my parents house where my nephews will be waiting to play again. I haven't packed everything out of the house in a while and I'm curious how much of my truck it is going to take to haul it all. I think it may be time to upgrade to a king cab truck... or an SUV.

OH NO!!! I just realized I didn't account for the Raider in my packing / foam considerations... well... I guess it will go back in its original box for this trip... no time for upgrades in Foam.

I use one of these with various 3-ring sleeve/pages:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LTC7XP8/

One side has the dials (without pegs as I use the upgraded dials) and base tokens in coin holder pages, with the bigger bases in 4x4 picture pages. Upgrades and pilots are on the other side in mini/American and standard card pages. The smaller epic ships fit into currency pages, haven't gotten to finding larger pages for the Tantive/Raider yet, but should be fairly easy to find something. Mine contains one of every ship released, with several multiples. THe zipper closure is a must as one wrong 'flip' and all the tokens and dials could try to make an escape.

Wowee Zowee! I love the Broken Token Mini-American Card Case. I can't believe I'm getting this excited about storage for stuff....but I am. Man...I just need to figure out how I'm going to pay for things. I've got store credit to spend on Imperial Vets. I've got some Focus Group money, but I just decided to spend it on a sound bar for my tv. It needs it badly. I think I'll have a little bit left over from that. Maybe I can beg the Mrs. It was just Father's Day.

I'll probably try to build the Sir Willis box today.

Man....thank you so much, guys. I really appreciate it. So much better than binders.

Ever live in Warren, Ohio?

I use a binder for pilot cards and pilot bases bases. Bases fit two to a slot and stay put. The grade cards I'm moving to small folios that will hold 360 cards each. These work great! And they are lighter than a binder.

Nope. I'm an East Coaster. My line of Chadwicks comes from North Carolina, which is funny that I ended up living here with no previous connection. My family tree has been quite narrow, until my generation.

I've got a pretty decent system set up. All the cards are sorted in binders, the damage decks stay in my tournament transport solution, along with as many tokens for two 100pt lists.

Binders:

@heychadwick. Where in NC? I'm Triangle/Raleigh.

@KMitchell. What case is that tournament case?

I hit Michael's today and got a small bead organizer box that seems to have sorted the tokens issue and a larger box with moveable divider slots that sorted the upgrades by type and has my small ship base overlays. That only covers half my issue though as pilot cards and large ship base overlays plus range/move rulers, dials, and misc stuff (asteroids, bomb tokens, all the extraneous mission doodads) still need a solution.
