Disappointed in "I Am Your Father's Day" Events

It's called making a living.
It's depressing that when the direction given is "run a non-competitive event" the best they could come up with was a tournament, just a less competitive one.
Where's the scenarios? The furballs? What a lack of imagination.
We gave them away to everyone who was playing xwing that day or got some xwing stuff. Turn out was light due to late announcement but was pretty good. We'll probably give the ones we didn't give out today at other events for participation prizes.
Did FFG distribute these cards to stores for free? I know they charge for those kits. If they weren't free, then don't get mad when stores want to charge money to enter into the event.
Are casual players such babies that they can't bear to deal with the stress and competition that comes from playing in a $5 event? What is with this need to act as if new players are adorable harmless puppies? What if you just handed them a power meta list, explained how it works, and let them stomp themselves? Wouldn't that help them get into the game better, instead of allowing them to play their own crap list and expecting others to bring crap lists?
If you baby new players, they end up showing up with dual Aggressors that don't have Autothrusters, saying that it's an overrated card.
And if you're not trying to get people to play in tournaments, then what value are they to the playerbase anyways? Who cares about them?
Hey fuzzie, did I play you and your son at Tacoma regionals?
I flew Ghost, Tycho, Green-A. I know I played a father/son team there and you've made enough references that I think maybe it was you?
And if you're not trying to get people to play in tournaments, then what value are they to the playerbase anyways? Who cares about them?
Other people who don't like playing tournaments?
This might come as a shock to you, but some people think X Wing tournaments are boring, and have no wish to participate.

Then those are people that don't like X-Wing and don't need to be catered to. I can understand preferring epic games for example, but if you find the standard format boring then maybe you should play another game. May I suggest Armada or Imperial Assault?

Yes, you're correct. In the same way that people who don't like anchovies don't like pizza, and people who don't like pickles don't like hamburgers.
It's embarrassing for you that I need to explain this, but not liking one niche aspect of a game doesn't mean you don't like the game at all.

The standard 100 point tournament format is not one niche aspect of the game. People who don't like beef don't like hamburgers.
Edited by ParaGoomba SlayerI suggest you politely ask for a card. I did at 4 stores who claimed it was prize support for a tourney that day. I didn't play 1 game.

Edited by AndrewGPaulI wanted to go but my non-local LGS is doing this today. and that would tie up to much time for me on a Sunday AND fathers-day...Probably would have gone and taken my daughter if it was yesterday.

Just commenting on your last two sentences. I think FFG cares about them. It's these players, that you thumb your nose at, that have made X-Wing the number ONE game. Do you think that ALL of THE COMPETITIVE PLAYERS combined did this? No, it's the beer and pretzel crowd that put X-Wing into the top spot. While competitive players might number in the tens of thousands, the beer and pretzel guys number in the hundreds of thousands. Or more.
I'll end this with a question like you did. Did you ever stop and think that an attitude like yours is keeping more players from joining the competitive player base?

Scenarios tend to bring out the controlling crowd who want players to play only in certain ways and play really sloppy.

MY FLGS store owner mentioned that they had to buy the kits. It wasn't that expensive so the locals who showed up for the event didn't have any issue with pitching in $5 for the night to cover the cost, but it was pretty odd that FFG promoted this as a 'free, just show up' type of thing and then in turn made stores who wanted to participate buy the kits...
My local store ran it as intended, by hosting an even for casual gaming at no charge. Those of us that play the game a lot demoed games to some new people and also just played games with each other all day. Had a good turn out and people had a lot of fun.
Well, what are the supposed to do? Just use the event to promote foot traffic to their store? Then how would I get any excess promos on ebay?
The event at FDB in the Ottawa/Gatineau region was a hit! 5 kids 4-12 were in attendance, at least 3 of which played (my 4 and 6 year old and someone else's ~12, could be his little brother (9) did as well). One player came with his son and dad! We had old guard players, newish ones (like me), and some that are very, very new at X-wing.
I'd guess overall there were near 20 players, which is a decent turnout around here.
The furball went really well, we had 2 tables going. Instead of a point system, we just tracked kills and specific achievements, including some for those for whom it's not going too well.
One of the achievement was killing your son or father, I got it first, then my youngest connered me at the end of the day. We got an oversized reversible Han/Boba for it. When we tallied the points, I was tied for first with 5 kills (I'm usually a middle of the pack player). My 4 year old was in the second group, those with 2 kills. My 6 year old played really, really well, but got no actual kills.
The three of us made out with: 3 reversible Luke/Vader, 1 oversized Han/Boba, 2 acrylic extra munitions (for tied at 1st), 1 recon spec (for my youngest's ranking), and 1 Academy pilot alt art for my oldest (all kids got something).
Amazing day, I would do it again, and I would have gladly paid for it, but our crew is awesome and it was open to all comers free of charge.
My FLGS handled it exactly as intended. We had a huge turnout too! I WAS supposed to bring my 6 year old, but then my 4 year old begged to go too.... so I ended up bringing them both. They didn't play too much because we played an EPIC game against another family, and it took 4 hours. kids ended up having snacks and playing iPads.
then...
My 6 year old did THIS however, and I thought it was too cute not to capture.

He wanted Zeb "Docked".

My store already had a tounrmaent schedules on the 18th, but added the I Am Your Father's Day event for the same day. Only 1 guy showed up with his kids for it (one of the tournament regulars) so he just joined the tournament and the promo cards were given out to the tournament players since no one else was there for em. There's another one at a different store today, so we'll see if that one has more people show up or not.
Our local event was fun. A small turnout of regulars, but we got in several one-on-one matches, then ended with a multiplayer free-for all, with a field of several Luke/Vader teams. It was a good time.
I was at the same store as Crabbok and it was great. Had about six or seven games going on at once, and had a good number of new players (one of whom bought it after watching a single game). Everybody got a promo card and free pizza, and we all had a great time playing a great game.
