Disappointed in "I Am Your Father's Day" Events

By slowreflex, in X-Wing

<grumpy>I have to say it sounded good on paper. Promo cards that are for getting new people to learn the game. Nice casual environment. Sounds great for the game.

However, in reality, all I've seen is using them as prizes for paid-for tournaments...

Sure, it's a way for stores to make some money, but I wish they'd see beyond the obvious and took the opportunity to get some new players into the game, which consequently would make them more money as well.

But nope, promos = paid for events. It's a shame. I hope it won't discourage FFG from trying something like this again.

P.S. - I've seen this in the UK, but suspect it's mostly like this everywhere.</grumpy>

Sad to hear that. My FLGS did it exactly as they should: casual play, show up and play a game and get a promo card. We ended the night with a 9-person furball. Good fun. :)

But I think I did hear of at least one game store in the area that used them for a tournament.

Yeah, getting new people into the store and into the game with a unique promo doesn't really work/has incredibly minimal positive outcomes for the store.

Really not surprised they target them at existing players via tournaments at all. Most game stores struggle to survive as it is.

We used it as a good opportunity to get our lagging group of players together for a mini-tournament. Figured if new curious players showed up they would enjoy seeing players in action.

We're running a furball at the FLGS tomorrow. One where you respawn when you die and get points for hits and kills. There's other prizes lined up based on performance, to be determined.

My 4 and 6 year old will be playing, maybe other kids too.

Whether many non tournament players will show up is another thing, I'll be sure to let you know.

I had a great experience at Tower Games in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was a casual play event that was free. I took my kids and played a 100 point game and did a furball with my kids. They even gave out extra prizes for dads. I ended up with a star wars lunchbox. It was well worth the hour plus drive each way.

We did casual, free, show up and play get a card. Exactly as intended.

Fuzzy Jr. and I had a great time at the Father's Day event. Sorry you didn't like yours.

My 5 year old and me first played the Trench Run and then he won his first tourney game. We did pay for the tourney but there was ships given out randomly to the kids. This may be one of my son's favorite days.

My FLGS had a low scale tournament planned for the fathers day event. However today there were 4 of us who arrived to play 1 with low experience and 1 brand new player. As a group we decided to call off the tournament and we played learning games to teach the new guys.

I'm happy to report we managed to excite 1 new person to the game in addition to all the walk ins who saw us teaching and watched and/or took part in the starter demo that was set up.

We had a guy running demos, and some of us went through the first couple of missions of Arturi cluster (which was AWESOME).

Our FLGS has the play listed for tomorrow. A casual, no fee come as you are game day. Should be a nice gathering. Not too many WAAC jobs but a few.

My FLGS is also doing a free come play and you get a card event. Just swing by for your Luke/Vader

Good to hear that it's not all commercial doom and gloom. Kudos to those that ran it as intended. Sounds like it worked out.

I bought out our kit and you can come in on the 17th or the 19th to play! Just come in and play or learn how! It was great to have 6 players out to play! Played a player from Brooklyn, NY. Was a good guy and over all casual play. Everyone got a card and will get one all weekend.

The only place locally that's doing it is doing it tomorrow.....right when I can' do it on Father's Day. So....can't make it. Bummer.

The event was fine, the card was stupid though. What's the point of it exactly? It's not really a alt art card, and having darth on one side and luke on the other is kinda weird.

On the plus side I got an alt art gunner card and possibly won a custom range ruler and dice bag for a fun side event they had.

I ran this event for my FLGS and we just had a casual day oriented towards new players. Wacky builds, games all over the place, time limit or not, whatever. It was great fun. Show up get a card.

We had 8 people all playing on my Death Star trench terrain. It was killer work trying to get it all done in time, but it was well worth it!

You went to Uncles Games in Tacoma, right? They also used the promos to host a tournament instead of an all-inclusive first-come-first-serve like it was intended to be, correct? isnt that what the OP is complaining about?
