The Cost of Victory - #FirstWorldProblems

By IceQube MkII, in Star Wars: Armada

I know everyone's eyes jump when they see 8x Rogues and Villains. Indeed, the price does run a bit higher than some other lists. PT109's list has a retail cost of 320. I ran the math on my own and it runs 290. A few others that I've looked at run as low as 270, but 300 +/- 20 seems pretty typical. Yes, the YT2400s make the national championship list run about 390 retail value, but could you get a similar effect by changing the list slightly.

My Regionals list is $200 (3 x Vics, 3 x Imp Squadrons, 1 x R&V).

That makes is $300 ($100 for the base game as that cost is included in other calculations). It's still cheaper then mine though ;)

Ah yes, that $100 hurdle to get into the game, because you can't reliably get the damage deck elsewhere.

And since my list already has a VSD, it would bring it to $260 (Core, 2 x Vics, 3 x Imp Squadrons, 1 x R&V).

Actually you also need 3xHome One or 3xISD packs for Boosted comms. (I understand that one can get these cards much cheaper then a cost of a pack, but it's a question of methodology being used for comparison)

Ah yes, forgot about that. Man, this game gets **** expensive.

Honestly, I have too many expansions now. I can't even remember where all of the cards come from. Oddly enough, I traded for a lot that was mostly Raiders and Gladiators, but came with three APTs. That was a pleasant surprise.

Now only if it had the TRCs as well. . .

Same here, it took me some time (and armadawarlords) to figure out what pack I got my Intel officers from. At least it's not as bad as X-Wing ;)Yet

Yeah. . .so I have about eight or nine of those. . .

As far as miniatures games, this game is pretty cheap. Our winning lists may come in around the 300-400 dollar mark, but most of us have a set number of units that represent a good number to remain competitive. You can often catch units for under list price if you wait for sales. I'm probably under 700 by the time you count peripherals such as plastic carrying cases. That's pretty good as far as hobbies go. For comparison's sake, you might spend 100 dollars a month on music lessons, if you're so inclined. By that comparison, plastic miniatures look cheap!

Another thing is that most people collecting arent just putting together one list and boom that's what I have. So when one says x list costs y dollars, imo that's a pretty meaningless metric. The question for me is what do I need to buy to field x competitive list that I wouldn't have bought anyway. For the most part, I haven't had to go beyond my base purchases to get what I want to run on the field.

The only exceptions being I purchased additional APT's, TRC's and YT-2400's. I'd probably pick up a couple more firesprays if I could catch them at the right price. Obviously, if you don't collect both factions your mileage may vary,

I make do. My Armada is Self-Funding, based on my Commission work.

One Core
One VSD

One Corvette
One Raider
One Gladiator
One ISD
Two Nebs
Two MC30s
Two MC80s
Three Assault Frigates

3 of Each Fighter Pack
2 R&V...

... However I'm missing bits and pieces. I'm down something like 6 X-Wing Squadrons due to making Z-95s, and people have made off with a Dengar and a Jan Ors.

The only time I wanted to fly something I couldn't afford, was when I took 5 Vics and Motti to the Store Championships.

But I was dared to do that.
And the local community was more than happy to pool resources to watch me do it.

You're right in one sense, that people will invest more than just the units for the list. The OP was making a point that although his list required a huge investment in YT2400s, probably more than most are willing to stomach, there are plenty of lists that can be built with a basic amount of stuff that people would buy anyway. I've got 2 of every large and medium, then 3 or 4 of most of the small. That's lean compared to some, but its still plenty of upgrades and units around which to build quality fleets.

2x Corvettes (40)

2x Rebel Squadrons (40)

2x Rogues (40)

2x Mc30s (60)

Core (100)

$280... I think you could have a fun/balanced/competitive list with this...

2x TRCs

2x kitted Shrimp

about 100 pts of fighters...

Sure, the Nationals list came out to $400(?) but you have a whole bunch of other toys to build fleets with... it's the People's Game and I'm sure you can get decent swag at the store championship level with any build!

Ohhh DtO revised. . .

Core set $100 (Dodonna and CR90, objectives, etc)

2x CR90's $40

5x MC30's $150 (TRC's and the ships themselves)

3x Nebulon-B's $60 (Intel Officer)

Total: $350

Wave 3 DtO:

Core set $100 (Dodonna and CR90, objectives, etc)

1x CR90's $20

4x MC30's $120 (TRC's and the ships themselves)

3x Nebulon-B's $60 (Intel Officer)

2x GR75's $40

2x Gozanti's $40 (Slicer Tools)

2x MC80's $80 (Tractor Beams, though I only own 1 which I got from Sullust and 2 ISD's)

Total: $460

What? No tractor beams?

As far as miniatures games, this game is pretty cheap.

So much this. If I were to get back into 40k and play the army I want (Imperial Guard), you're talking $200 just for my Troops models that fill out a minimum requirement. The rest of the army would probably run another 300-400, plus paint, plus time for assembly/painting. And that's for a single build.

Guh, that's a reminder of the bad old days. Used to play guard myself, and decided that I wanted to build me an armoured company. That was /not/ the cheapest decision I ever did make.

No, I'm pretty happy with Armada and X-Wing, and really look forward to expanding my collection
