Deathfire and problem with tie bombers

With Veterans coming out soon I was starting to look at Tie Bombers again and I thought "deathfire" has a cool ability until I realized that tie bombers only have 1 bomb slot. So even using extra munitions at most I could only ever use "deathfire"'s ability 2 times. Why is it the "tie bomber" has more missile and torpedo slots than it does bomb slots.

eh, you don't need more than two conners anyway

just give him extra munitions, Ion pulse missiles and g-chips. Bam!

It's not too often you'd need more than two bombs to begin with. Sure, they could have included a card to swap a torpedo or missile slot for another bomb slot, but I don't think many are going to run a 24 point Scimitar to drop 4 mines. Deathfire is kind of an outlier, but you could say the same about Deathrain only having limited chances to use his equally great ability.

being able to "front bomb" makes him BY FAR the most practical, most easily applied conner net dispenser in the game

thing with Deathfire is conners + extras + IPM + chips is 26 points, which is the same as Deathrain...without upgrades :(

I don't see any reason for Deathfire not to have even Homing Missile or something over the IPM. You can toss Long Range Sensors to get the lock, get a big turn one shot, then do crazy bombing shenanigans.

Yeah i really wish there was a bomber title that let them equip bombs in their missile/torp slots.

Deathfire with extra muns and 8 cluster mines or conner nets. Just fly around dropping minefields everywhere lol

Yeah, the standard TIE-Bomber really needed to be printed with two bomb slots. An unfortunate missed printing opportunity, I suppose.

I suspect the assumption is that an IPM lets you set up beautifully for bombing runs in future rounds, which helps when you're not quite as aggressive with templates as Deathrain can be.

More bombs would be nice, but it fits, thematically. In "TIE Fighter", bombs were heavy weapons. You could hold a dozen missiles, eight torpedoes, or like four bombs. It simply makes sense that they would hold more of the smaller ordnance and less of the heavier ordnance.

Agreed, but I'm saying it's still limited to the number of bombs he's toting. It's a much better ability, but it still only triggers a max of 4 times.

Deathfire will probably be lucky to get two bombs off before he dies anyway.

It now carries two thanks to EM.

That is why you are getting this wonderful ability for 1 point.

Punishers blow....if they were a little cheaper or had an EPT they'd be amazing.

I fly bombers all the time. At our current league I'm flying a bomber list every week. So far I'm 3/1.

A second bomb slot would sure be welcome, but in all honesty the need to drop a 3rd bomb almost never comes up. You're lucky if you can get two off and at that point the game is almost over.

So two would be nice, but only having one isn't a tragedy.

I'm going to try some bomber lists this weekend. I suspect they're underused in tournament play, but I'll find out if this is warranted or not. I used to play with them without chimps and extra munitions and they were not bad. So how could they not be better with these upgrades? Here are my lists:

Rhymer + EM + PTL + AdvProtonTorps + chimps

Kagi + elect baffle

Soontir (kitted out for defence)

Rhymer + plasma torps + EM + chimps + PTL

Jonus + concussion missile + EM + chimps + PTL

I think the problem with tie bombers is the name. Change it to tie weapon platform.

punishers don't need epts (though I wouldn't say no to PS 9 redline; he could really use it), but yeah some 2/3 point cut AT THE VERY LEAST would be a good start

not sure how it maths out, but if the X and B are almost on par with 6 effective health + 2 agility VS 8 health + 1 agility, I think the cutlass wouldn't replace the scimitar if it were only 2/3 points more expensive rather than freaking 5

I have not played him, but it seems like Rhymer's ability makes him an ideal candidate for Advanced Homing Missle.

What do you think about that in you Jonus build?

i was actually thinking of using Rhymer for Adv Proton Torpedos.

He has an EPT, which means i can do 1 of 2 things: PTL to be completely self-sufficient for TL + Focus, or Deadeye and have something with Crew around and a Fleet Officer. Range2 Adv Proton Torps sounds juicy...

I think we were just talking about him on Facebook!

I'd say mainly because the early designers were quite cautious about a bomber of things, and automatic damage outside of the combat phase was probably a concerning subject for them.

Try 2x Gamma with Proton Torp, EM, Tracers, chips, 1x gamma with Plasma Torp, EM, Tracers, chips, with 26 point OL

OL is your anti-ace, and at PS 4 Uboats just go away, before they fire. This list was a lot of fun at San Diego regionals.

I don't know, A-SLAMing K-wings are pretty good at going from Range 3 to dropping a bomb on your ace before it moves...
